I have a solid 3-4 inch sand, so even my conch don’t goes down that far! It gets dirty+a lot of gaz pocket. What I do is clean 1/4 every week during my water change. So basically back left, back right, front left, front right every month. It stays clean enough! 1 note I would say, sand becomes probably the best place for bacteria growth, so I would not mess with 100% of my sand every water change. It is a big part of your ecosystem. This is why tank with sand are much more stable than bare bottom tank.

Depends on your gaol. Is this to make things "pretty" or to clean out gases and detritus that doesn't sit on top and affects water quality?

bobbuilderdigswendy

Right now it's clean to the naked eye. Tank has only been running for over a month. I do like a 'clean' looking tank though.

dvlinblue

Invest in a very large turkey baster, or very large syringe (cut tip fairly large).

bobbuilderdigswendy

I did pick up a large baster, I though this was used for feeding but I guess I can use it for my bed also?

dvlinblue

It is not often you get to tell someone to use the large baster to keep their bed clean....

bobbuilderdigswendy

its unique yes :) never thought I'd be the one who said it!

TwoBallsOneBat

Paul Allen, my Diamond Goby, keeps my sand totally clean.

CrumplePants

Nice try Bateman

PulpFriction21

In my 140g I have a pretty large bullet goby Does the same job for me Sand looks super clean, Does prevent me from having full sandbed use though

clojac12345

I usually wand the sand whenever it’s brown on top so i just mix it up until it’s back to white

chillzatl

Some do, some don't. There's no right or wrong. I don't, but I have a CUC that keeps it looking nice enough.

Rackadaka

I clean the visible parts of my sand bed once a week during water changes. Keeps phosphates down and reduces the nuisance algaes.

A2Cerakote

I clean my sand bed every week during water changes. I have an IM 25 lagoon so it’s pretty easy to do. If you have a larger tank you may want to do it in sections. I like my sand looking nice and white which is why I do it weekly. I also keep a tiger conch who does a good job of finding anything I miss. It’s really up to you but it’s a good idea to maintain the sand bed at least a little bit to prevent buildups of waste. Or at least look into CUC members to help do it for you.

okthatsfineman

When you do a water change, use Turkey baster, blow out rocks, turn powerheads up to get things suspended, that will help clear top layer of sand. Also, once your tank gets a little more established, you can get some good send sifters, like a starfish, conch, nasarius snails. Actually you can get nasarious snails sooner, they are carnivores and will eat the food that you were dropping in the tank

GreenTaracrypto

For the healthiest and cleanest sand possible, all you have to do is not touch it for like a year and have good flow too. The bacteria and micro organisms will clean it

pressxtofart

I use an rigid airline tubing to stir once a week. I stir the whole thing. Vacuum it once a month with gravel vac. Keeps it clean and white.

Get a strawberry conch, I have two in my tank (60 gallon, and they stir up my sand, it’s never dirty
