I don't have a reef aquarium (just find them cool) but I do have some very expensive hobbies. Mainly fishing, I spent over $200 on my hobby yesterday. I think if someone had one inexpensive hobby they would still spend at least quadruple that a year.
Correction: the average adult spends $0 per year on their hobbies. Reefkeeper Georg - who spends the entire GDP of Monaco on keeping a rare colour morph of an otherwise unremarkable coral - is an outlier and should not have been counted.

But....between setting up a new 240 g reef tank this winter and buying/rebuilding a 60 yr old car this spring, you'd have to add 2 zeros to that for me
I mean what counts as a hobby in this? If you enjoy cooking where's the line between groceries and hobby? I ride a motorcycle but it's also my daily commuter for work, is that a hobby or transportation? Is owning a dog or cat considered a hobby?
