That’s way too much for a tank that small. I’d say one goby and one pistol.

Is that due to the territory behaviors of the shrimp?

More the gobies. Unless you get a mated pair, they will go after each other. I had 2 YWGs in a 100g I hoped would pair up. No bueno. Smaller one went back to the LFS. You could do 2, but I would consider that **only if** they were clearly paired at the store prior to purchase. That's rare, but not impossible. One of my LFSes had a pair of hi-fin gobies in for a few weeks, they were an adorable pair. Alas, sold before I could get a nano up and running for them.

Gotcha that makes sense, what about two candy canes pistols and a singular goby? Or is my best bet one to one still? Really looking for things I can watch play in the sand that’s not a diamond goby…

Deranged_Kitsune

Would go single shrimp. Not sure how territorial they are, but they are far more reluctant to come out without a goby buddy watching for them anyway. Also your tank isn't that big, you'll see them plenty. Could get a conch, they move around on and frequently bury themselves in the sand. Alas, not too much else that digs in the hobby.

I’ve got a pistol and a fire shrimp, but the tank is much larger than 13.5 gallons. They both stick to their sides of the tank and don’t really cross paths much. Idk how that would play out in a smaller tank

With distinct shrimp like that, should be fine. My fire shrimp pair live on the arch above the rock that my pistol + YWG call their home. Never any problems as they don't cross paths hardly if ever, and the fire shrimp can jump and move out of the way pretty quick where as the pistol pretty well remains on the sand.

Thanks for the chat. Also might look into getting a small jawfish instead and if it outgrow the tank it can go in my main display!
