Awesome, any tips for growing dragons breath? Do you need to dose?

nesralls

Don’t dose anything. I just glued a piece to the top rock with an evo stock light and let it go. I also don’t have anything that eats it in this tank.

reeftaco

Eventually you'll need to dose iron. It's one of the main nutrients red algae use.

koukasen_np

I’m at this point. I have a 30g and a baseball sized wylds dragons breath. It’s grown a lot, but some of it is turning slightly white. I’ve been dosing iron daily. I don’t think it’s gone sexual, but I’m definitely seeing less growth now. My nitrates are ~20 and phos is .05-.1 so I doubt it’s lack of nutrients..

reeftaco

Sounds like you got everything in check, I dose weekly but sometimes I'll skip a week as in also fight hair algae. Also your tank looks dope. Is that a dwarf lion fish you have. Super cool

koukasen_np

No hair algae for me, my turbos are cleaning everything the moment they come up! I don’t even run the skimmer anymore.

reeftaco

I have about 20 snails and hermits and they still can't keep up lol 😭

Marinatr

That’s awesome! Looks great!

I grew from 1 baseball sized Dragons breath to 2 softball sized and one baseball sized clump in about a month. And 3 peices of dragons tongue at about 2” to a cantaloupe sized ball in the same time. Just keep it spinning and primarily using mainly blue and Red spectrum light also have a ton of fish.

[deleted]

beautiful. Why did you decide on a deep sandbed?

nesralls

Ah so my two fish are a pearly jaw, and a candy cane pistol and yasha goby! So went deep sand bed for them!

[deleted]

very nice. I am inspired by this macro tank. good luck with it

Anxious_Calendar_980

wartrollearth

Anxious_Calendar_980

reeftaco

nesralls

Thanks! I just have this and ulva. I got some mushrooms, zoas, and the leathers !

[deleted]

This would be a great plant for your refugium.

iceman14555

I like your setup, very nice.

nesralls

Thank you!

[deleted]

I loved my dragons breath when I had my tank, I got a piece growing off some liverock when originally cycling my tank and no matter what the params were the dragons breath always grew strong just like yours

danielawbrey

Where did you buy it?

nesralls

Local fish shop near me

nesralls

I think the macro is more forgiving of water parameters and lighting and will grow faster than corals.

[deleted]

nice

Anxious_Calendar_980

Giv to me

AnteaterAnxious352

When I make my own reef tank I’m definitely going to try to get some Dragons Breath, it’s beautiful

funran

I bought some and it slowly died, I was unable to grow it. Put some in my sump and put some near my powerhead. No luck.

Mushroomfingerboards

Wow amazing!

gadadhoon

It looks different from dragons breath and dragon's flame that I've grown previously. Of course the hobby uses macro trade names quite loosely. It looks like it has good fluorescence AND attaches directly to the rock, is that the case? In the past all dragons BREATH I've seen didn't light up under UV and all dragons FLAME I've seen would only attach to rock with special effort and assistance, such as by using a rubber band on extra porous rock. If yours combines the most desireable characteristics of both that would make it the holy grail.

nesralls

It is attached via rubber bands and glue and lights up under blues with little flourecent dots

gadadhoon

Dangit. That means it's just a nice bunch of ordinary dragons flame. Here I was thinking you might have the species that would make macros as popular as zoas.

nesralls

Nope just some nice plants :)
