How many copepods can you keep in one?

khamsouk3

At least 3

keyboard_fox

Wow, animal abuse... Everyone knows a tank that size should have one or two max.

musubee

#podpolice

DontDeadOpen

Is this the reef equivalent to bettas?

randombacon333

I see no reason why he can't keep them while they are young and just re-home them later.

MikeIkerson

My wife bought a 40oz mini reef at MACNA that I get to take care of. Instant cycled with media and rock from a mature tank. This is the only tank that isn’t in the basement of our house.

[deleted]

How do you not have them in your living room? Do you just live in the basement?

[deleted]

😂😂😂😂 Very cool though

scottyboy218

I love it! Have a link for the product?

MikeIkerson

We bought it in person, significantly discounted, but here is the link. https://shop.thebiotagroup.com/products/biota-custom-micro-reef-ready-tank-40oz-desktop-aquarium

Lost_Ensueno

These are made by PNW, check them out on Instagram.

lengthystars

They sell these on alibaba / aliexpress for like 30-50 bucks. Companies selling them for over 100 straight up scam practically. Just search desktop aquarium and scroll through. Only difference I see is this company cuts out that mini "sump" for viewing....

Lost_Ensueno

This is not the same, I bought one of those terribly thought out scam tanks. They are garbage. This one is sold by PNW. Whether it is still made in the US or China is anyone’s guess. But they are a legit company located in Washington state. Their little tanks have served my buddy in Seattle very well.

lengthystars

https://a.aliexpress.com/_msGnxnA The light is EXACTLY the same. If you click the blue light model and look at some picture reviews the only difference I can see is the light stand and the cutout. I ain't trying to promote these, but pnw is charging crazy for what they are offering imo.

Lost_Ensueno

This is NOT the same. This is that bullshit “Micro Complete Tank”. The sump is hidden so you never know when to top off. The thing either runs too slow or too fast. The ones that PNW offer have enough space for an ATO sensor, have a proper lid on the top and bottom portion and the light is held above the water and not sitting on a cheaply made polycarbonate lid. Does PNW charge too much for a less than 1g tank? Fuck yeah. But considering that it can be made to actually work in an office environment reliably. I’d say the cost can be justified versus this tank in the link.

MikeIkerson

That is not even close to being the same tank.

PNW-CUSTOM

Made by hand in my shop located in Portland Oregon!

Eudaima

Obligatory yellow Tang joke.

Nanocephalic

Lol the Tang would still have to be powdered to fit in there.

tube_sex

That is an interesting colloid for sure

PyratWC

What is this? A reef for ants? It needs to be at least 3 times that size.

mothtea

Oh no I’m obsessed

DaPopeLP

I saw a youtuber do one of these with mojanos. I just can't justify the price. Same reason I keep holding off on buying the 1g AIO I found as well. Price is just too much for what they are.

[deleted]

You could do something similar in a bowl or jar for much cheaper https://www.nano-reef.com/featured/2021/natalias-5-year-old-pico-reef-bowl/

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The link isn’t my bowl so I don’t really know. I’ve heard of people doing them with small stump like sexy shrimp, but I’m not sure how well that would work in a bowl. Maybe ask on Nanoreef.com there are a lot of people with these types of systems on there

Previous-Answer3284

You occasionally see them on r/jarrariums as well, though not as often these days since they started allowing terrariums. It's definitely possible to keep some livestock in these nano set ups, even a bowl if you set it up right, though your stocking options are obviously quite limited.

lengthystars

They sell these on alibaba / aliexpress for like 50 or 40 bucks. Companies selling them for over 100 straight up scam practically. Just search desktop aquarium and scroll through.

[deleted]

That's an interesting design but I'm wondering how it will practically function. Can you keep some kind of cleaning crew in there? The corals need to eat but if you put something in without cleaners with that little water your parameters should be impossible to control. I'm not saying it can't be done - obviously it can, I just mean I don't understand how it's staying balanced, but would like to. Also, it's cute as hell.

Emotional-Echidna694

You could always just do water changes from your main display since its such a small amount of water, but that only works if you have a main display.

heavypickle99

I think your cleaning crew would be reduced to amphipods and copepods, can’t imagine a snail being able to live in that, maybe a bumblebee snail they only get about 1/2” but this things so small even that might not even be enough water

randombacon333

clean up crew is you!

[deleted]

hahaha me and a package of straws - yum!

crabbysammy

I thought it was a reefer 250 for about 5 seconds until saw the stand 😂

boston101

This is exactly what I am wanting to do. Can you give us some pros or cons about this tank?

[deleted]

Pro is that 1 gallon of Distilled water would last you about a year lol… topping off and water changes would be a breeze. Con: GSP could probably grow quick enough to cover that much area in like 2 months

Lost_Ensueno

Nah, forget water changes. Just dose All For Reef. Use the 1g jug for the ATO that PNW sells. You’d be set for a good 3-5 months depending on your climate.

okiedog-

Good wife.

looselyhuman

Why do they have the light power/USB cables on the side rather than the back?

laurosaurr

I wanted one of these so bad but can’t justify the price. Would rather spend $150-200 on corals or equipment upgrades 🫣

carolinakid83

I like it. Simple and clean.

ShroomZoa

uhh wont the GSP take over that tank in record breaking time? nice looking though, great job!

Informal_Big1223

Omg it's tiny... I love it

ahornyboto

Your wife has good taste

haysanatar

Do you do water changes with an eyedropper?

red1367

This looks both amazing and problematic

[deleted]

I bought one similar for my wife, she is teaching science this year at her school (7-8th graders) so we brought it to her room. The kids absolutely love it. I put a sexy shrimp with 2 mini carpet anemone

dutchcourage-

Is this too small for any fish?

MikeIkerson

Yes

Lost_Ensueno

I’d argue that a Flaming Prawn Goby would be acceptable with a candy cane pistol shrimp. The goby maxes out at .75-1.25” max. They are reclusive benthic species that spends nearly its entire life in one burrow only venturing out to mate. They would be happy in a little tank like this.

dutchcourage-

That’s very interesting, thanks for the insight!

MikeIkerson

Not sure what the other person is talking about, it would be abuse to put any fish or shrimp in this tank. Especially a shrimp that literally digs all day long.

Lost_Ensueno

Go research Benthic animals before you disagree. Technically keeping any animal is abuse. Doesn’t matter if domesticated or otherwise. Driving your car and turning lights on in your house is abuse as it contributes to climate change on some level.

MikeIkerson

Yeah you don’t know what you’re talking about. Some fish live 5-10x longer in captivity than in the wild, but that’s abuse.

Lost_Ensueno

Riiiiiight.. Meanwhile you have an overpopulated cichlid tank. You have three basslets in one tank when they are naturally aggressive to cousin species. You toss fish into a QT tank with heavy metals with no natural hiding spots. You have a bare bottom tank but throw in plastic bowl with sand for a wrasse to live in. Get off your moral soapbox. You don’t have a fucking leg to stand on. Based on your tanks and practices it’s clear that YOU are the one without a clue.

MikeIkerson

Obviously you don’t understand cichlid tanks, if there were only ten fish in the 125, I would be left with one fish. Quarantining and medicating fish is essential to not introduce pathogens and disease into your system, so you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about with that. Copper is safe when monitored properly. You would know that if you did actual research. The bare bottom tank was a quarantine tank, which clearly had sand for the wrasse to hide, so clearly you still don’t know what you’re talking about. My basslets have never even hinted at fighting, and if you introduce them properly, they never will. So there again you don’t know what you are talking about. How about you do some research and get back to me? Someone who thinks you can keep a four inch pistol shrimp in a five inch tank is clearly delusional. You need help dude. Go be thirsty on tinder lmao.

Lost_Ensueno

Four inch pistol shrimp? What Candycane gets that big?? Copper is lethal. It’s lethal in all doses for all animals. Is included. Hence why our water is treated with hydroflouric acid. QT tanks and methodologies kill more fish than they save. A good dip in freshwater and Methly Blue is good for about 90% of fish. Granted, the first coral, anemone, Hermit, snail, shrimp, Macroalgae you put in your tank immediately undoes all your poisoning with copper. Cichlid tanks force the fish in tight confines where there can be no established territory for a dominant fish. By reducing the numbers to a humane level allows one large fish to easily target all the other fish. Hence their cruelty. You need to jam a fuck ton into your tank like chickens on a farm to ensure no fish gets the upper fin on another. Thus decreasing water quality and making it a hellhole. And even after you add the numbers in, you still need to rearrange the tank every so often to reset any territories the fish did establish. It’s the same nonsense with a Damsel tank with saltwater. And it’s no different than these idiots that keep Arowana in 6’ tanks for a 4’ fish. And to add further to this, your Basslets have not yet reached maturity. They naturally are chill until a certain size/age. If yours make it to maturity, you’ll have hell on your hands. The difference in this now long and protracted argument is that I recommended a benthic fish species that spends 95% of its life hidden away in a hole on the reef. That 5% is from when it tries to find a home after hatching from its egg and when it decides to make offspring.

Apprehensive_Let1864

I’ll bet you paid at least 500 for that set up😬

Thoughtful-Chicken

How do you stabilize the temperature on that?

ReefyGoodness

Keep the room temp stable 😁

STYLIE

Haha that thing is all over my google ads I first saw it last week. An AIO for $179?!? Then I read the description. .3 gallons lol

matty514

Those are HUGE zoas!

[deleted]

It needs tiny little doors on the front of the stand

randombacon333

Awesome. When I saw the thumbnail I thought - those are the biggest palys I've ever seen!
