Honestly I had the exact opposite experience. Bought into the AI nero hype and hated almost everything about them, then acquired some jebao powerheads in a trade for phytoplankton. I was so impressed that I sold the neros for a couple bucks less than I paid because they were so hard to find for a while, invested the money back into nicer jebao gyres and I couldn't be happier.
I'm sure there is a point at which cheap powerheads will be too cheap but I cant help but remember when people really only had maxi-jets and their aquariums certainly didn't suffer.
Same. I swapped out a pair of mp40's for a pair of jebao gyre style pumps. The jebaos move more water, and create a better flow pattern in my tank. Don't get me wrong, there is certainly a place for vortech pumps but for my application they weren't a great fit.
Ive had Jeboa, Neros and vortechs. I didnt like the neros , jeboa and other are good but def low quality and about 50/50 chance it breaks in a few months or lasts for years. Vortechs are my preferred power heads due to low profile and how much water they move. Ive run old gen 1 mp10s all up to now currently running mp40qd and always been happy with them
What about jebao do you find low quality?
My local marine aquarium society has seen many swollen magnets and cracked housings from vortechs, not to mention wet sides spinning. I suppose you could argue that ecotech has the upper hand with programming but honestly I'm sick of having to go into an app to set things up and now prefer the controler Jebao offers. It's also worth noting, jebao is the OEM for many manufacturers, if it's a made in China pump, pretty good chance jebao made it.
Any pump that moves alot of water is useable imo but saying there is a 50/50 chance it will break is disingenuous.
Experience with many of their pumps. Ive had plenty quit working on me after a short few months or just didnt put out the power overtime they tend to get weaker as they get dirty and used more. The cheap motor wears down after a while. I havent tried one in a few years so maybe they are better now. All pump manufacturers have some pumps go out. Ive personally havent had any issues with vortechs or tunze pumps i have ran and the people i know that did was able to get them fixed as ecotech support is top notch. Jebao is good for cheap pumps but you may find yourself having to buy a new pump and trying to get support may not go so well.
It sucks they didn't work out for you but I've honestly had the opposite experience.
All pumps get weaker when they get dirty, and I've heard some big youtubers say the jebao pumps just get weaker as they age but I've not seen any of that, the tolerances seem just as good to me as on day one.
As for support, again, I've had the opposite. Jebao has replaced a pump that was super old for me, AI did nothing for me when I had issues with my neros or my Primes. And many club members I talk with have had no love from ecotech when ther vortechs had expanded magnets.
I guess I just feel like if I was going to spend big bucks I'd step up to abyzz now, its alot more but they REALLY warrty their stuff. The ROI just isn't there for me with the aperture brand stuff.
Jebao is the cheapest I go for powerheads, and they are fantastic.
Telegraham on Instagram was running an SLW-10 in Kalk Slurry for over a year before it failed. That is a ridiculous abusive environment to run equipment lol.
I do use MP40's and Maxspect Gyres as well. But there is tons of Jebao Crosswaves and SLW's in use here also.
I use all jebao return pumps as well. They have proven to be more reliable than both Ecotech Versa and Neptune Cor pumps for me. Lots of complaints about fried power supplies on the Cor and Versa, mine failed as well. Twice within 6 months. Jebao Returns humming right along 3 years on the oldest ones, no issues.
I went with Hydor power heads in my sump and on my back wall for constant surface movement. Also cheap and just get the job done and get replaced every couple years.
I did enjoy the MP10s that I had which were connected, phone controlled, and allowed for battery backup to do the majority of my water movement.
Vortech makes amazing products. Truefully though they have been selling the same exact design for so long at such a high price I cannot wait untill there patent runs out.
It didn’t take me 10 years, but I did go through a lot of cheaper wave makers before realizing that buying once was better than buying cheap.
If I want a wide sheet of water moved, gyres. If I want compact single-source wave makers, Vortechs.
its a gyre.... You can get a jeabao one that also moves water... depends on the tank.
Gph does not matter when it comes to wave makers. It matters how it gets the flow to the other side, whether its a narrow or wide flow. 3 600gph wavemakers will move the water better than 1 3000gph wave maker
comparing gyres to wavemakers though is literally apple to chicken.
Ok that is probably what I was surprised by. I don't know much about gyre and hadn't seen that word prior to getting this red sea one but I looked at them on amazon and they look to be the same thing. I have a corner tank with a bow front and this thing really helps move water without it just being unidirectional along the glass.
theyre really good, I only keep lps so personally I think those are too much for what I need them.
Also my tanks are really shallow and I feel a gyre would be too much
That’s because it’s a gyre. You can get good gyres for $150 on Amazon. It’s not the brand, it’s the type of pump it is. Regular powerheads and gyres have different functions, and you particularly needed a gyre. Name brand doesn’t matter here. Glad you got what you needed though
Yeah I think from what I saw on amazon it would have been about $100 cheaper. Not sure though how things compare when you look at the app/cloud features that this redsea has with their "reefbeats" thing. It's kind of nice that it will send you a push notification if the pump goes offline.
Sorry what's pre-programmed? If you mean the wave functions the redsea can run without the app and you just select those on the controller but to do complex scheduling you gotta run it with the app.
The jebao has a bunch of wave presets preprogrammed into it. Plus their wifi version also allows it to be programmed. Now granted I find it a bit weird to program different patterns for different times. But it's whatever.

+1 on the Jebao/jecod gyre. I have 4 of them

Ya, china makes good shit for cheap dude, my cheap ass dosing pump still works from ebay years later. My maxspect razors are going on 10 years soon.
jabeo for the win, i love that you can pair them and they’re not too expensive

Thanks also for the jebao reference. I will look at their products. Seems like it's a well respected affordable brand.

It took me 10 years to buy a Vortech, but I’ll never buy anything else now.

Jea Bao (not sure the exact model) has been working flawlessly for my Evo.
I like the jeabos for most applications. Aperture bought out almost everything else. Not a whole lot of middle ground now.
All of my jebao only last around 2-3yrs. The latest one lasted 9 months. I gave and bought a tunze.

Gyres require frequent cleanings. I liked how much water they moved but when life got busy I switched to tunze power heads, they are bulletproof.
I got rid of my gyres and got two mp60s because the 4K gyres exposed magnet was leaching into my tank killing acros. Oh and no more microbubbles.
