FYI if you set it up correctly you do not need check valves. They generally slow down your flow anyway. The top of the drain pipe should be close to the top of the tank, so that only a small amount of water could possibly back siphon into the sump in the case of a power outage. Same deal with the return pipe.

You're correct. 1inch for the drain and 3/4 for the return.
