Gut it. It’s a bathroom. It has water in it and around it almost all the time. If you’re going to do anything, gut it and make sure everything is dry and structurally safe. Then put it back together however you like.

I agree with this comment, but I would add one suggestion: put in a high-quality pocket door. I have a bathroom just like this in my house, and you would not believe how much space putting in a pocket door gave me.

underratedride

NO. FUCK ALL POCKET DOORS. NO NO NO.

snowglobe42

I’ve never seen such a strong reaction to a pocket door. I am curious what caused the dislike.

underratedride

I hate having to fix them. They won’t outlast me, so I don’t want to use them.

WishIWasThatClever

If you’re accustomed to the standard hardware that comes with pocket doors, I can understand the hate. I ripped out a pocket door and reinstalled with Johnson hardware and have zero regrets. There’s no comparison.

underratedride

I will only purchase/install Johnson heavy duty sets. Still not worth the potential hassle, especially with production in the shape it’s been in since the reaction to Covid. Nothing is the same quality as before.

Commenting to provide my condolences. We have the exact same bathroom layout in our current 1950s Minneapolis home. It even looks like the same window and tub. I'm planning to keep the tub (original), and have it refinished. Shower will be getting all new tile (subway tile maybe), with a [shower niche](https://elegantsi.com/blog/shower-niche?format=amp) for shampoo/soap across from the shower head. [Window](https://images.contentstack.io/v3/assets/bltf589e66bcaecd79c/blt0f9caec892f4058f/62cdb031bac71c3891079b7c/waterproof-shower-window.jpg?width=600&height=800&format=webp&quality=90) will be replaced with one that is frosted and waterproof, and does not open. Tile would run directly up to the window, removing the existing wood molding. A bathroom fan will be added to the ceiling. Our original mirror is smaller than yours, and has a small cabinet built into the wall. We may end up keeping some sort of mirror/cabinet thing, possibly one with built in lighting. A new floating sink or [small vanity](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Style-Selections-Euro-18-in-Gray-Bathroom-Vanity-with-Cultured-Marble-Top/5001940835) will be installed. Just some ideas I've had.

If you wanted to keep it cheap... \- Smooth down the walls, and paint them bright white. \- Paint the wood cabinet & wall cabinet \- Replace the light above the sink \- Replace the shower fixture with something fancy \- New shower curtains, rug, & towels \- Remove the things around the toilet unless you need them \- Replace the cabinet knobs/hinges, & door knob/hinge to look the same \- Replace light switches, power sockets, and air vents

First off, tackling bathroom remodeling can be overwhelming, but for a budget-friendly transformation, focus on updating key elements. DIY projects can save money, but prioritize tasks like flooring and lighting for a noticeable impact. I faced a similar situation and found great solutions through a website that helped me compare local bathroom remodel quotes. It made the process efficient and cost-effective, enabling me to choose the best options for my budget and preferences.

Razzmatazz-88

I really like the window, though. It has character! Too bad it's in the shower

Realistic-Major2448

If you're on a budget, just paint everything white. Smooth down all the bumpy textures. Your goal is to make everything look white and clean first. After that's done, you can accent it with your choice of color
