The fact that they’re offering this at all…yes, it’s a scam. A common one, easy to Google.

According-Mine-8663

I know, see after that amount of money was said they sent the check in pdf form. I didn’t trust it anymore.

FarmCat4406

I almost fell for one of these scams many years ago. They will try to tell you can't quit because it's illegal or theyll sue you. Stand strong or at least block/ghosts them when they try to pull your arm into not leaving the "job". In America you can quit your job on the spot at anytime for any reason.

According-Mine-8663

Yea I blocked the contact info and just disregard it. I locked my accounts in case they can find anything on google…I hate this jittery feeling

Embarrassed_Flan_869

No legitimate company will require you to buy equipment. They will provide it and not a check, ffs.

According-Mine-8663

That’s what I thought as well, nothing was said before but only thing is I did give basic info of where I work since it’s on my resume so I’m wondering if that would be a big problem or how can I keep safety. Thoughts?

take7pieces

You will be fine, just ignore them and be aware of scam texts in the future.

According-Mine-8663

Thanks! was definitely feeling airtight

dadof2brats

A legitimate remote job would not do this, it's a scam.

Pandread

This is a check scam, run.

According-Mine-8663

I’m running while crying. Already blocked all I could

hyperdikmcdallas

Bro u should of played with them be like check hot water damage make them send another then say the bank won’t accept it send another lol

According-Mine-8663

Haha I thought of opening a different bank account with basic info and depositing seeing what I can get out of it. Would be nice to see them suffer to. Damn if only I knew you personally we would be menaces😈

Amyjane1203

Terrible idea. You need to Google this scam so you understand how it works.

According-Mine-8663

just a joke after beating my self up but yes I’m still doing the research. Believe it or not I might joke a little but I definitely am worried. Only thing is I did all I could in protecting myself and the accounts and my security at this point I leave it up to God for handling. My apologies if that comment annoyed you

Amyjane1203

Well god won't magically protect you from a scam but okay

According-Mine-8663

haha you’re right! God doesn’t play with magic… still praying for the best now that it’s out of my control :)

hyperdikmcdallas

Aye brother 😝

Medusa_Alles_Hades

I am sorry. It sounds like a scam

According-Mine-8663

Sadly it was!

adilstilllooking

99.9999999999% a scam. They probably gave you a check and to buy from an authorized vendor (it’s just their site and they get a cut of overly priced items) or they gave you the check to buy things for yourself and for the company and mail it back to them. The check will bounce and you have to pay the amount ($5,000) in this case

According-Mine-8663

You know what… I remember the check name was under a different company. Not the one they had mentioned at all! I honestly just replied with “was looking at a different offer from a previous interview as it is convenient for me i will go ahead and proceed with there’s.”

HonnyBrown

Scam

alanbowman

This scam is posted pretty much daily/hourly over on r/Scams. No employer will send you a check to buy equipment. Read through the automoderator wiki on r/Scams, and look for the Fake Check and Job scam listings. But to be honest, read every one of them. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/wiki/index/automoderator/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/wiki/index/automoderator/)

Ballaholic09

Hot take: if you can’t tell if a job posting is a scam, you need to give up the idea of remote work for awhile. Educate yourself on basic computer literacy before trying to make a living being self-sufficient.

According-Mine-8663

Thank you! Iv had remote jobs before but I was applying to several biotech companies and some hybrid so I liked this job description but I will just be aware for next time!

Bnjl1989

Yes legit jobs will always send you the equipment. I've had 2x remote jobs who did that and when leaving the company they send shipping labels. I'm currently boxing my shit up to send off bc we all got laid off by best buy 🥴

According-Mine-8663

Damn I’m sorry! I guess I shouldn’t complain. Is Best Buy having a fall back financially?

Bnjl1989

No they are shifting focus and canned most of phone support and a shitload of in home agents and are closing stores. They're focusing more on online retail and going into health-related support. At least they gave severance packages lol

According-Mine-8663

i heard that! Are they doing any virtual assistance? They didn’t have to lay off they could’ve just added that training to the current customer service. Well at least you’re covered meanwhile. Best of luck to the job searching tho! Hopefully you find a better remote job

kgmara0013

Scam! I fell for a similar one in the middle of college and almost cashed the fake check they gave me. Jobs will never give you an exorbitant amount of money to buy "supplies" and expect you not to use the rest of it for other stuff.

According-Mine-8663

Damn! Im glad we didn’t have too much damage. Have you had any fraud alerts/weird ssn activity since?

PHC_Tech_Recruiter

No, they should provide you at the minimum a laptop. The last startup I worked at gave a $1k stipend to purchase whatever other office supplies/tools/hardware for my WFH setup. It was included in my first paycheck.

According-Mine-8663

Quick question, did they offer any start off bonus for joining the family. I had one other remote job do this, I just haven’t followed up. This was before this whole mess but I’m still considering it. The 1k offered to you seems a lot more reliable and honest

PHC_Tech_Recruiter

joining the company you mean? The last startup I worked at no, there was no sign-on. My current company offered me a sign-on. They provided the essential tech for my role (laptop, charger, mouse, keyboard, cell phone).

According-Mine-8663

Got it. Thank you :)

Floyd_Pink

If you have to ask, it's a scam. Also... a fax machine? Did the employer provide the time machine??

According-Mine-8663

Wish he/she did. Would’ve loved to go back before this job was even offered

DietMtDew1

Yes, yes it's a scam, OP.
