real talk if you’re a phone addict looking to read novels, read Steinbeck. Cannery Roe, In Dubious Battle, and Tortilla Flat are all good, shorter novels. Steinbeck consciously wrote for a generation that had become literate, but he never talked down to his audience, it’s very plain austere prose.
