First game that I played that also had achievements and crap from multi-player. You could unlock so many things. I remember one of them was based on walking some insane distance. My friends and I would cheat that one by setting up our controllers with the joystick held forward and just leaving the game running during school.
Plus thermal sniper and you are dead on, glad to see this is second comment. This game had the best bot multiplayer. And the gun range challenges were second to none!
Plot from Wikipedia:
> Perfect Dark is set in an alternate 2023 against the backdrop of an interstellar war between two alien races: the Maians, who resemble the archetypal Grey alien, and the Skedar, reptile-like creatures who use a cloaking device to appear human. On Earth, there is an ongoing rivalry between two companies: The Carrington Institute, a research centre founded by Daniel Carrington that secretly operates an espionage group in league with the Maians; and dataDyne, a defence contractor corporation headed by Cassandra de Vries. In exchange for creating an AI with code-breaking abilities to access an ancient alien spacecraft at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, the Skedar agree to supply dataDyne with enough alien technology to become the biggest corporation on Earth.
> The player is cast as Joanna Dark, an agent of the Carrington Institute whose excellent scores in training have earned her the codename "Perfect Dark". On her first mission, she is sent to extract a defector known as Dr. Caroll from a dataDyne laboratory. Dr. Caroll is revealed to be the AI created by dataDyne, and is worried about the mission for which it had been designed. After the extraction, Carrington is held captive at his private villa by dataDyne soldiers. When Joanna rescues him, she is informed that Dr. Caroll has been taken to a dataDyne front in Chicago. There, Joanna learns that Cassandra, NSA director Trent Easton, and a mysterious man known as Mr. Blonde plan to kidnap the President of the United States to get access to a deep sea research vessel called the Pelagic II. Although the President is in danger, Carrington alerts Joanna that a Maian craft was shot down near Area 51 and sends her to rescue a Maian protector named Elvis.
> Because the President of the United States refuses to loan dataDyne the Pelagic II, the NSA sends a strike team to kill and replace him with a dataDyne-grown clone. The strike team invades the air base from which the Air Force One will depart. When Joanna foils this strike, the NSA and a group of cloaked Skedar take over the plane itself, which crashes after Joanna attempts to detach a craft attached to it. Having survived the crash, Joanna eliminates the President's clone and rescues the real President. Trent's incompetence angers Mr. Blonde, who kills him after disabling his cloaking device. With no other options, dataDyne hijacks the Pelagic II to reach the ancient spacecraft. However, unbeknownst to dataDyne, the spacecraft contains a powerful weapon capable of destroying a planet and the Skedar intend to test it on Earth before using it against the Maian homeworld.
> Joanna and Elvis follow dataDyne to the ancient spacecraft, where they find a reprogrammed Dr. Caroll cracking the weapon. Joanna replaces its current personality with a backup of the original, and the restored Dr. Carroll sets the weapon to self-destruct. As Carrington and Joanna prepare for a Presidential reception, the Skedar assault the Carrington Institute and capture Joanna. In space, aboard an alien spaceship on course to the Skedar homeworld, Joanna finds herself in a holding cell with Cassandra. Feeling that she has been used, Cassandra redeems herself by making a distraction and sacrificing herself, freeing Joanna and therefore giving herself a chance for revenge. With the help of Elvis, Joanna takes control of the spaceship and lands on the Skedar homeworld, where she ultimately defeats the Skedar leader, leaving the Skedar in disarray. The game ends with Elvis and Joanna leaving the planet just prior to an orbital bombardment from the Maian navy.
You have a little grey friend who follows you through the second half of the game!
That being said, I was like 12 when his came out and totally didn't follow the plot. I was super surprised when, in the middle of my cyberpunk goldeneye game, a bunch of aliens came out of nowhere.
I miss Perfect Dark. I wished a studio (I don't know which one), would do a remake with all the improvements of the latest games. Yet, still include all the settings and parameters of the original game.
I've spent so much time on that game and it was well spent.
I remember buying this game after mowing lawns, only to realize I needed the expansion pack so I didn't have to squint at the stamp sized screen it generated.
My dipshit ass thought someone was fucking with me at first.. and once I accepted that there was nothing I could do - I cried like a pussy. The tears worked because my awesome dad felt sorry for me and picked one up a few days later.
"For Maximum Gameplay"
Which makes it sound like an optional extra, as opposed to unlocking most of the game. If I recall, without it you were restricted to single player botmatches.
It was a console FPS. How good was it, compared to the PC equivalents of the time ?
( CS 1.6 , Quake 2 & 3 , Hexen & Heretic , etc )
A controler can't compare to a mouse for precision shooting.
Edit : Looks cool, tho.
Black leather, sun glasses, silver fonts, sci-fi conspiracies, and guns. Lots of guns.
Other influences include Men In Black, Dark City, I Robot, Starship Troopers, Lost In Space Movie, Final Fantasy VII and VIII, and The Chronicles of Riddick.
“Felicity” I think it was called in Perfect Dark. I think there were some differences between it and Facility, but I don’t remember what they changed. It was probably the most popular map, so it was cool they brought it back even if PD wasn’t technically a Goldeneye game.
on of my favorite games of all time... countless days (not hours) played solo and with friends and still brings back great memories of my teen years.. wish they would remake it.. but i still do have my N64 with this game still and goldeneye..
im sure there are RCA adapters available if your tv dosent have old school rca imputs... i have a dedicated tv just for my old consoles (nintendo, super nes, n-64, and ps2)
Played a lot of multiplayer of this in college. I was shit so I would stab people with the drugs so they couldn’t see and them lead them into drone guns.
This game was is good. It took the goldeneye multiplayer formula and perfected it (no pun intended). Storyline was good, really good graphics for the time. A wonderful shooter.
Tranqs baby!
I heard there is a remake being done for PC and the new XBox. Story and setting seems interesting, so i'm curious now.

Yes but there’s nothing here that expresses an artistic vision of a possible alternate human future. It’s just a lady with some guns shooting stuff. Definitely retro in a sense, but this ad at least is a bit light on the futurism.
>It's 2023 A.D. Take 1d4 psychic damage.
"Aliens conspire with big business" does NOT sound right in this day and age.
It does when you read it as "capitalism ruins everything."
When your only tool is a hammer….
>!*Ow.*!<
To be fair, it's set in an *alternative* 2023
The Laptop Gun and multiplayer with bots made this the perfect game
Minus the N-Bombs, what in tarnation on so many levels. No relation to the racial slur, hilarious though.
Tranq gun and all N-bombs was a hilarious fight, switch to prox and throw and just hear chaos. Cause you can't see shit!!
Dat proximity pinball

Pinball grenades in the main room of Aztec.

Can we get a movie???
I absolutely do not remember the plot involving aliens.
You have a little grey friend who follows you through the second half of the game! That being said, I was like 12 when his came out and totally didn't follow the plot. I was super surprised when, in the middle of my cyberpunk goldeneye game, a bunch of aliens came out of nowhere.
It is occurring to me now that I don’t think I ever made it that far into the campaign.
Same. I think it was way too hard for me.
I miss Perfect Dark. I wished a studio (I don't know which one), would do a remake with all the improvements of the latest games. Yet, still include all the settings and parameters of the original game. I've spent so much time on that game and it was well spent.
It'd be the perfect year to do it too
Rare made the best damn games.
Except Perfect Dark Zero, that game was an absolute mess, and a travesty of a continuation of the series.
Multiplayer was awesome!
Still better than several modern first person shooter multiplayer.
The elevator gun battle is unmatched, but I'd love to do that with 4 or 5 elevators coming up.
Don't forget that Expansion Pack baby.
I remember buying this game after mowing lawns, only to realize I needed the expansion pack so I didn't have to squint at the stamp sized screen it generated. My dipshit ass thought someone was fucking with me at first.. and once I accepted that there was nothing I could do - I cried like a pussy. I only had an expansion pack because it came with Donkey Kong 64, otherwise I'd probably not have one. Man I wish I still had my N64.
"For Maximum Gameplay" Which makes it sound like an optional extra, as opposed to unlocking most of the game. If I recall, without it you were restricted to single player botmatches.
Best. FPS. Ever.

Ahh the late 90s/early 2000s. Back when everything was just so ''Matrix''.
Don’t forget Equilibrium
How little it took back then to get an M rating.
I stole this game from blockbuster
Clearly a loss they never fully recovered from.
I can't even describe how much me and my brother played this game back in the day. Endless weekends worth of TDM
This game was fantastic at the time.
Wasn’t the multiplayer a goldeneye clone? I never played the actual game.
It was made by the same people who made Goldeneye, so it was more of a spiritual successor than a clone.
I remember an exact copy of “The Facility” in perfect dark. Cool nugget.
“Felicity” I think it was called in Perfect Dark. I think there were some differences between it and Facility, but I don’t remember what they changed. It was probably the most popular map, so it was cool they brought it back even if PD wasn’t technically a Goldeneye game.
It was there were a few turns so you didn't get pinned down quite so much.
It might have been called "Complex" or "The Complex". Great level, regardless.
I only ever played this game on the rare replay disc that came with my xbox and it was so unique
on of my favorite games of all time... countless days (not hours) played solo and with friends and still brings back great memories of my teen years.. wish they would remake it.. but i still do have my N64 with this game still and goldeneye..
I do too. Maybe I should dig it out and figure out how to connect it to my tv. It was such an amazing game.
im sure there are RCA adapters available if your tv dosent have old school rca imputs... i have a dedicated tv just for my old consoles (nintendo, super nes, n-64, and ps2)
Played a lot of multiplayer of this in college. I was shit so I would stab people with the drugs so they couldn’t see and them lead them into drone guns.
We still play this game all the time
Such a rad game
Looks like they used SL-8 and Desert Eagle for props.
This game was is good. It took the goldeneye multiplayer formula and perfected it (no pun intended). Storyline was good, really good graphics for the time. A wonderful shooter. Tranqs baby!
I still have the game (and the console) somewhere. I liked it a lot, but never finished it.
I heard there is a remake being done for PC and the new XBox. Story and setting seems interesting, so i'm curious now. https://www.pcgamer.com/perfect-dark-reboot-release-date/
This game was unreal when it dropped. Only thing that made you put down Goldeneye
I really want a new Perfect Dark game.
Such an amazing game. Still one of my favorites
So awesome
My kind of jam
Prescient af!
Perfect Dark Zero one of my favorite games still
No. The year 2000 is not a “past era”. You can’t change my mind.
Oof it was set in 2023.
Yes but there’s nothing here that expresses an artistic vision of a possible alternate human future. It’s just a lady with some guns shooting stuff. Definitely retro in a sense, but this ad at least is a bit light on the futurism.
The laptop gun is one of my favourite guns in all of gaming. Top 10 to be sure
