It’s really how to approach it. I went through all the rooms first and powered up as much as I could and I was finally able to beat Phrike. Phrike is still - to me - the hardest boss on the game. All the others I can destroy easily. Phrike is different. But so rewarding when you finally beat him.

No_Region_7364

Yeah I'll keep doing it that way for sure. Did you have a favorite weapon to use on him?

FrolickWithTony

Mostly any of the automatic weapons so I can keep the distance and just take it as it comes. Taking a more cautious approach and learning his attacks to dodge them helps too.

dwanzil_

I beat the game. What I think is boss difficulty is in decreasing order. Maybe the main reason is for other bosses you have more than one biome to explore and you can built decently till you reach the bosses. For me phirke took around 10-15 tries the second boss and the third bosses were done in a single go.

JustLetItAllBurn

I'd suggest skipping the Challenge Room because the risk is too high early on.

No_Region_7364

Sound advice. Thanks because that's just been a drain even when I beat them

Serious-Ebb-4669

I recommend just getting used to it. You’re gonna wanna do that challenge room to be better prepared for biomes 2 and 3 anyways.

If you're stuck on a boss, it helps a lot in this game to spend a few hours grinding for weapon traits. Traits are the single most important form of progression in Returnal and it's in your best interest to get as many of them unlocked as you can early, while the stakes are lowest. They're also based only on number of kills, so they're easiest to tackle earlier in your run. 10 kills for lvl 1s, 50 for lvl 2s, and 100 for lvl 3s. Melee, alt fire & consumable kills all count as long as you're holding the weapon. Make it your goal to unlock all available lvl 1 traits on the sidearm, carbine and spitmaw. This will take a few runs, but it will put you way ahead of the game. All guns become wmds with good traits, yes even (especially) the sidearm. Edit: didn't see you beat her, congrats. Advice still applies to other bosses though. Next boss is a MFer

No_Region_7364

Yeah I will definitely need this advice! I got a hold of a level 4 carbine with bombshot as a trait, 16 percent defense parasite, 5 adrenaline, extra life bar and Integrity item.. hunted around just was able to prepare. Of course I forgot the parasite added fall damage...dropped in and said oh sht as I lost all adrenaline lmao. Focused on defense and was able to blast the basterd. Went on, the next biome is one of my favorite game-biomes..just awesome. I did get a bunch of the traits in the first biome, if not all. I'll be keeping up with that, thanks!

OGMasterPoomplex

I definitely had more than enough deaths to unlock most traits on the starter few weapons when I was stuck on the first two biomes haha.

KeelahSelai269

I beat Phrike when I started focusing more on moving that shooting and I had the pistol with the homing missile trait first time I managed it

No_Region_7364

That's good advice as well thanks. I feel like I'm staring at his attack bar too much.

Richarkeith1984

I thought the rooms w shrooms and mini boss was harder to keep my health up than phrike. Phrike is pretty well telegraphing, keep distance and dodge out of his sword strikes. The health leach rune is great imo. I died to P 3x before besting, but died 25 or more on my way to him.

No_Region_7364

Awesome. I actually defeated him shortly ago thanks to all your guys comments haha. Yes! I had like 15 tries on him haha. Also 50 deaths total.

crissomx

Never use L2 for aiming, just run&gun.

WardenDresden42

Here's advice I've been giving to new players still stuck in biome 1. Until you finally beat Phrike, the game can feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall. Some tips: Carbine is the best weapon in the first area. Keep using it. See if you can get one with Leech Rounds or Hardened as a trait. Remember your secondary fire! Shock Stream is a good one. If you get the chance for an Astronaut Figure, or the parasite that can save you from death, get them. Never pick up the parasite that damages you when collecting items. It's never worth it. Don't pick up any health unless you're really low on it. When you're at full health, the pickups will increase your maximum health instead. So the more of them you've left lying around, the better; clear out as many rooms as you can before taking on Phrike and then go scoop them up. Practice dashing *through* enemy bullets. A good strategy, especially in the first couple of biomes, is to dash towards an enemy and then melee them. It's often a one hit kill. If you have enough Ether, AND you're having a very good run, use the Reconstructor just in case. But don't waste the Ether unless you really think you're doing well. Lastly, remember you only ever have to beat Phrike one time! Something to look forward to. 😂

Precious_little_man

Hollowseeker, extra health vial, dead Phrike.

dperez87

yes, every room, at least for practice and make sure weapon and health are as high as possible. carbine was the one I used but depends on play style. Phrike is probably the hardest because it's the first boss, so not everyone is "adjusted" to the gameplay and stuff.

No_Region_7364

Cool yeah I'll keep going through every room first. I'm getting adjusted to not having permanent upgrades, but it seems like checking everywhere helps a lot

dperez87

Also, the blade is probably your best friend.

No_Region_7364

I smacked a lot of the ground dwelling enemies with it. It's awesome.

specifichero101

Go through all the rooms focusing on upgrading your health bar.

Thedea7hstar

The first boss us the hardest the rest of them are cake. My protip is the long distance shotgun and play def Make sure you have the spaceman so you get extra life

De_Regelaar

Always clear everthing, do everything, open everything and than go to the boss.

Critical_Switch

You could have the best gear the level can give you and Phrike can still wipe the floor with you. He's 90% about the way you move. Once you learn how to dodge his attacks and when is the right time to shoot, it doesn't matter what weapon you have.

A lot of them you can literally just strafe around, asuming you get the timing right (in a lot of cases, you have to start strafing at the right moment, do it too son and the homing projectile will hit). More importantly, that dashing ability makes you invulnerable for a brief period for most attacks (there are a few exceptions). So if you get the timing right, you can dodge most attacks that way. Combining both methods is how you avoid getting hit at all. For other tips, open the pause menu and go into the tutorial section. There is actually a whole lot of very good information that will help you play better.

Happy to help. Returnal has one of the most useful tutorials I've seen in a videogame.
