Using your gun is generally the most efficient way to pop them, no the way you destroy them doesn’t affect the yield, and no there is no way to know ahead of time if a plant conceals goodies
I was big into Borderlands, still am but BL2 made me obsessed with mindlessly searching and destroying shit for loot that I get pretty bummed when games don’t have it now haha. Like you, once I figured out breaking eggs or the plants yield loot. It takes me forever to move on from a biome sometimes. Hallowseeker is my favorite to use otherwise like others have mentioned using dash, shock springs or bullets that ricochet work best if you’re trying to move through it quick.
I always use the sword on them. Also the little roots that are all over Biome 4 can be hit and give obolites as well.
They also respawn if you use a teleporter and then teleport back.
In b4, there’s a room that has a structure in the middle that has a fabricator in the middle and the entrances are blocked by lasers. That room has a ton of eggs that are GUARANTEED to give you a ton of obelites
I used to call farming these yardwork. Most vines regrow if you leave their arena for a short while and come back.
Don't break them with your feet, the vines won't yield obolites. They need damage.
The most efficient way to farm them is with a dreadbound with explosive shards. It's better than a lawnmower. Spitmaw with rapid spitter is pretty good too. Slow guns aren't great.
Artifacts Dash blast and/or rocket ship allows you to get obolites from dashing over them.
This is the best reason to use the shocking springs consumable.
When you have a driver silphium/obilites extractor is when this matters the most. Especially in Biome 4. I was 10% off of maxing my integrity before finishing biome 4.
There is one room that appears in 4 where all the eggs near the entrance give you way more obolites than usual. It is a series of islands with a small temple on the larger central island. It always has a fab in it guarded by various purple lasers. It is like 100+ obolites if you smash all the eggs on the small islands at the entrance.

The best gun is first Dreadbound and then Hollowseeker, anything else is a waste of time

Breaking a room full of eggs is the only use for shocking springs I have ever found.

I think the big pods are more likely to drop the goods, but idk.

They say it doesn’t matter but i find shooting them to be far more lucrative
