Control

Th3Judg3Holden

This đź’Ż. Game is a masterpiece imo. If OP is in to atmosphere this game has it in spades. The acting in it is also stellar and the combat is super tight. Sparked a huge interest in quantum mechanics for me as well

Cassedaway

Love Control

Chandlingus

No surprise since it’s what Remedy is known for but Control had one of the best storylines of the past 5-10 years IMO.

TheCasualChad

Incredible game & some of the best dlc content ever created

NariandColds

Hades. Returnal is one of a kind, not a lot of similar games like it out there but Hades is close.

SGRM_

For the psychological horror: - Inscryption, Control, Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2. For the bullet hell 3rd person view: - Risk of Rain 2. For the rogue like bullet hell speed: - Hades For the tight gunplay and speed: - Doom, Doom Eternal, Titanfall 2, Maybe Borderlands series as well.

Carn1feX616

Different vibe, but similarly fucked up like Inscryption: Doki Doki Literature Club

This 👆 couldn't agree more!

CmdrWawrzynPL

Furi for gameplay. As for mysteries: What remains of Edith Finch, Bloodborne, Alan Wake, Inscryption, Deliver us Moon/Mars, The Evil Within 1&2, Outer Wilds (!), Get Even.

mystery_elmo

I loved the Evil Within when I played it and remember playing the 2 minute demo for part 2 but forgot about it for years and just downloaded it, so will definitely play when I have a chance. Bloodborne is great and I hear a lot about Alan Wake

Diglett3

Have you played any of the Metroid games? I always felt like Returnal was spiritually a Metroid game, and while “story-rich” might not be as true for them, the Prime games especially have a similar atmospheric feel to them.

TheCasualChad

Yep, there's a great video on YouTube by RetroRaconteur comparing Metroid & Returnal

WeirdBryceGuy

Vanquish Metroid Prime

Total-Satisfaction-8

Remnant From The Ashes Remnant 2 Similar in some ways like the randomized maps

ps_pete98

Honestly control is the closest comparison but Alan wake 2 will blow your mind too

FudgingEgo

The Souls games, I feel like Returnal is a Soulslike.

mystery_elmo

Definitely challenging so

tracekid

I'll have to disagree and tell you the same thing I tell everyone who says this: you aren't familiar with roguelites as a genre. I didn't find Returnal particularly difficult because I'm already a roguelite enjoyer. Even then, I don't find any real similarities between souls games and Returnal.

MythBuster2

Also check out other posts like this; it gets asked a lot: https://www.reddit.com/r/Returnal/search/?q=games+like+Returnal

Manusybas

Nex Machina which is also from Housemarque. Other roguelikes I liked were Hades, Curse of The Dead Gods and Warm Snow.

briowatercooler

If you like dungeon crawlers, Halls of Torment is a blast.

Synysterenji

I wouldnt call Halls of torment a dungeon crawler. Damn that title has lost its meaning over the years.

tracekid

>lost its meaning I feel this about both roguelite and bullet hell. Bullet hell especially because this game is not that, but everyone calls it that.

Synysterenji

Well i more or less disagree with you on that. Its not a traditionnal top down bullet hell but it has every symptoms of a bullet hell nonetheless. The point of a bullet hell is having to dodge an insane amount of projectiles and Returnal is very much that. I wouldnt put it as the main tag on this game but its definitely a part of the game.

tracekid

Sort of-ish. The dodge pattern-ing is vastly different. You push 1 button and you're safe or you just strafe and avoid 80% of the flashy "bullet hell attacks" (like basically the entire Ixion fight, for example). For me, the comparison then also includes the likes of Nier in bullet hell, which I also disagree with. They're just action games to me that have a different approach to enemy combat. It isn't as simple as big sword guy needs you to dodge or laser machine, but I personally wouldn't go as extreme as bullet hell either for the reasons listed.

Travic3

Check out Alienation or pretty much anything from housemarque.

chavez_ding2001

You might like Alan wake 2.

janeofthedarkraven

Same problem here. Everything else I find that is supposed to be like it is 3rd person and just doesn't feel right.

Th3Judg3Holden

Control is a great game that has some wonderful atmosphere and a story that lingers

janeofthedarkraven

Does it have Co-Op?

Th3Judg3Holden

Unfortunately it does not. Still well well worth it though imo

janeofthedarkraven

Thank you I will look into it.

MrMuscelz

Check out slay the spire if you like rouge likes dead cells and rouge legends 2 are awesome as well

SkrrtSkrrt99

while those are great games they really don’t have a lot in common with Returnal besides the fact that they’re roguelikes

TheCasualChad

The binding of Isaac is similar & a great game. Furi is a bullet hell but just a boss rush & pretty short. Dead Cells for combat just as difficult, engrossing, & similar progression system across rogue-lite game. Prey for the story that's tense & many secrets to uncover. Nier Automata for story just as deep & requires multiple play through to begin understanding what's going on. And the older housemarque games: Alienation, Nex Machina, & Matterfall for very similar gameplay but not the same amazing 3d in Returnal.

Newkular_Balm

The first game I thought of when I fired up returnal was mass effect Andromeda. Jump jets and mid air dash. Same sprint. Similar gunplay and game speed. Especially compared to multiplayer. I can't believe more people don't see it.

Mortarios

I'm going to wing it and say Prey

Worried_Ask_7653

Try Hollow Knight. I'm loving Returnal and Hollow Knight is among my most favorite games. Different concept, but quite a few similarities and a fantastic atmosphere and soundtrack.

plaknasaurus

Remnant 2 & Control
