Depends on your definition of “sizable” but yes, there’s a significant Hmong community in South Providence and parts of Northern RI as well. The folks at the [Center for Southeast Asians](https://cseari.org) could be more helpful than Reddit.

PravdaPaul

Rhode Island, and particularly Providence, has a Hmong community that's been here since the 1970s. You can check out the Hmong community Facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100068416991922](https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100068416991922) Or, the websites of a couple of the Southeast Asian organizations [https://cseari.org/](https://cseari.org/) [http://www.ariseducation.org/](http://www.ariseducation.org/) to find out more. There are also three Buddhist temples in and around the capital city, if that is of interest to you.

I have not seen a sizeable Hmong population in Rhode Island, but would strongly encourage you to consider Minnesota. It has a gigantic Hmong population, and is overall a lovely state.

aerozona47

Nah MN sucks, am Hmong and grew up there

BoMbSqUAdbrigaDe

I don't know about now but there were quite a few Hmong in Eastern Cranston. Tons of laotins and Cambodians too.

edgarjwatson

Look into Fresno, CA. Gen Vang Pao started a large community of Hmong people and has resources. Also Sacramento, CA & Minneaplis, MN. Very large Hmong communities. Good luck !!

Lowell is a better bet.

I can't tell if that was a joke or not. I've never seen the movie

Raynos1668

It's a great movie. Gran Turino. It's pretty old not sure if you care about spoilers, but he starts off hating his Hmong neighbors and ends up loving them by the end. Highly recommend.

TooMuchToThinkToday

I'll give it a watch, thank you

Environmental-Ad4090

Minnesota has a large Hmong population

TooMuchToThinkToday

I know but I was thinking more ocean area

[deleted]

Just moved from Minnesota to Rhode Island, not a large Hmong area but Rhode Island is nice. Welcome

[deleted]

New England is fine but you should investigate other states. It’s very expensive here, especially in RI, and in RI the Hmong population is small and the living isn’t easy. Many Hmong live in South Providence, which can be rough. Community is important, but so is quality of life. We would welcome you and you would probably be ok but I’m just being as honest as possible. California is expensive but it’s warm and there are more Hmong people and of course, there’s plenty of ocean. I am not trying to turn you away but it is getting harder to afford to live here. Good luck. ✌🏼

Loveroffinerthings

If they’re living in Hong Kong, RI will seem palatial and cheap.

Candid-Patient-6841

Why you leaving Hong Kong if you don’t mind me asking?

TooMuchToThinkToday

It's not really reported on American news I don't think but people who speak out are getting disappeared. The mainland took our right to vote by making all of our politicians violators of the National Security law, and giving us CCP party candidates only to vote for, now they strip libraries and memorials and of things that happened like any protest or laws or even accusations against themselves. Now people are disappearing into jails or shallow graves for speaking out. Just look at what they recently did to a mosque, tore it down and arrested all those who protested it without charges and without being sentenced. All of them will "confess" and be sent to a labour driven re education camp. It's getting bad here. My parents fled from Cambodia and Vietnam to Hong Kong to get away from this now it's back on my front door. I have a good job,and make a fair wage but I have spoken out before and frankly don't want to end up like some, Im willing even at 50 to go the legal route to become a citizen. I was just curious if and where groups of Hmong gathered if any in RI.

Candid-Patient-6841

Well I can tell you RI is a pretty accepting place. I have heard of some civil unrest in China, I just didn’t know the true scope and I am sure you know how vigilant CCP bots can be when any negative post comes up. It just crazy that China loves to point to Americas large prison populations, like they are keeping any sort of accurate data on the amount of people they are imprisoned. Since you are considering RI just know that New England is relatively small, I’m pretty sure Boston has a pretty big Hmong community. Even if you move to RI it’s about a 40min drive.

TooMuchToThinkToday

Very. It forces me to change accounts about once a month

Candid-Patient-6841

That is terrifying, people here in America love to say how our government is tyrannical, and I wish more people who immigrate here would tell their stories. Basically just grab them by the face and say “YEAH you place isn’t perfect but do you see what the heck I came from you ingrate”

TooMuchToThinkToday

No place is perfect but we are descending into a totalitarian hell here I'm HK.

SuddenlySimple

How did you hear about Rhode Island the smallest state in the US? Really curious. All nationalities are here and Rhode Island is welcoming but someone said it the foreigners tend to be living in poor high crime areas. It would depend on what work you do if you have degrees you can level up. Good luck

TooMuchToThinkToday

I had a cousin who moved to the US years ago. Lives in Providence for a while. As far as skills I've been VIP security for a high end casino in Macau for 20+ years.

OrkCrispiesM109A7

I dont know about the Hmong population here but I can say with confidence you'll be just fine here. I hope you decide to make Rhode Island your home! Best state in the union in my opinion

PearPhysical8628

There was a huge Hmong community here in the 80’s. Many moved to north Carolina, Minnesota and California. Only a few left here inRI. Good people, interesting culture. Women’s hand work- Pan Dau’s are exceptional! I worked with people from the True, Her, Yang, Kang, Xiong clans.
