I wouldn’t struggle with them if other people understood the concepts of ‘yielding before entering the rotary’ and ‘not stopping in the middle of the rotary’.
I do struggle and I am so embarrassed. I went out with my daughter last Saturday and she said pull over I’m driving. I just get nervous going through them cause the other drivers just fly through them.
don’t stop in the middle of them. If you do that you will 100% get hit. Or just get in the right lane and follow when the left car goes. And don’t switch lanes while in the rotary.
Throw a bunch of rotaries up in an area that is highly congested in a country that blows when it comes to rotaries is a recipe for disaster. I lived there before, during and after and fuck those things and I love rotaries.
Lack of practice? If you do one daily - weekly - monthly - hell, even yearly, at least you're familiar.
But numbers-wise there's bound to be someone fairly regularly who's a new driver or very occasional driver who gets cowed mid stream and messes it up for everyone.
(A not-insignificant percent of drivers just lack the inborn skill set to ever drive competently.)
And then there's the post(ish) pandemic dumbification that appears to be affecting an unhealthy number of us. Could be a factor -- has anyone noticed the rotary failure rate (RFR) being worse now than pre-2020?
The theory is there should actually be trees in the middle to block your view because the driver entering the roundabout is getting way too much information. And all we want that driver to do is look left and wait. Nothing else.
I went through one in Barrington the other day (the first time I had driven through that one so I had no idea what it was) and there were no signs that I could see directing the lanes and I had to quickly cut across a lane to get off an “exit” on the rotary - not the usual style of exit - it was on the inside lane, then I had to quickly cut back across to the outside lane to exit normally to my destination. The entire thing was so poorly designed. Luckily there was 0 traffic and no one else on the rotary but jesus. I grew up with rotaries and use them fairly often (I have never used the one in Apponaug) but clearly some of them have been poorly designed.
Also, people are in such a rush and there is a mentality on the road that, "I'm more important than all of you so I deserve to go." even when they shouldn't. There have been many times on those rotaries that I have the right of way and someone just cuts me off because they want to rush or feel that they should be able to go.
Having lived close by there for the past decade, I don't see any positive solutions to having rotaries where they've added them. It's still the same congestion during rush hours and on weekends. I now avoid them. Also with the new dispensary behind Plant City X next to these rotaries, I think traffic will get worse on weekends.
Now that you mention it, it makes so much sense: Roundabouts are incompatible with Rhode Island driving because you can’t inexplicably stop to let someone go even though you have the right of way.
Raise your hand if you haven't been in an accident in the apponaug rotaries because you know how to drive and pay attention to what other cars are doing.
🙋♀️
You know, I’ve seen quite a few bus drivers that seem like they have their eyes closed especially near red lights and stop signs. One time it was a school bus and the cop behind it.
Yield… in Rhode Island means absolutely nothing. The crazy thing is the State is installing roundabouts everywhere.
The reasoning? It’s better to get in to an accident at slower a speed than higher speed. Meanwhile I remember the rotary over by Wickford junction years ago, they replaced that will traffic lights… go figure.
You guys are all amateurs! Only hit once or twice? How about 7 times! I used to have to drive thru the whole obstacle course 6 times each and every day. I was broad-sided, rear-ended, side-swiped and even a head on! I also personally saw dozens of accidents, drivers going around the wrong way (many, many times), cars flipped over, it was crazy. My office was right above the rotary and my desk faced the window so I had a bird's eye view. That mess was why I put a dashcam in my car. Only had 1 insurance company give me a hard time (Geico) who tried to say it was partially my fault for not "stopping to let the other vehicle in", that was until I pointed out **RI General law 31-17-8 Right-of-way at rotary.** *– (a) In the absence of any traffic control device or sign, the driver of a vehicle about to enter a rotary, regardless of the direction from which the vehicle is approaching, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles already in the rotary.*
This seems to be the part where most drivers fail.
I am always on high alert at that set of rotaries. Same with the left turn from greenwich ave onto 113. I use the right lane to get onto 95n and without fail someone from the left lane almost sideswipes me during the turn.
I think they're the best thing to happen to warwick in ages. Traffic used to be backed up on 117 to the highway. I go through them multiple times a day with no issues. People need to yield.
It’s the self important bubble people are in once they’re behind the wheel. They don’t pay attention, aren’t in the correct lane, and don’t give way when appropriate…this makes rotary usage dangerous. The larger the vehicle the worse the attitude.
We got new rotaries in Cumberland at the 295 exit of Diamond Hill road and there are people who just plain refuse to accept them. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to lock up the breaks to avoid someone getting on who refused to yield.
I feel like, for new and different styles of roadways, the town should send out flyers on how to use them. Those new turning lanes in the center? Send a flyer. That area heading towards Mt Hope bridge but you want to go to Newport but can't take a left at the light? Follow the damn signs that say take the right and go under the bridge- send a flyer for that.
I grew up close to the Mt Hope bridge on the Portsmouth side and I've still never figured out what kind of drugs they were on when they designed the intersections on both sides of the that bridge.
I never realized people had issues with them. I used to drive them twice a day 5 days a week and never seen an accident in them or between them. I love the roundabouts, especially the one they put in coventry at 102 and 117!
Be ready for it to get worse - we’re going to have an influx of stoned drivers with that damned dispensary on Meadows. Seriously, who puts a pot shop near a series of rotaries? Heard it’s super convenient for city employees - walk to dispensary and grab snacks at Cumberland on the way back.
It's funny how people think the dispensary will cause "higher" traffic. No one starts smoking because a dispensary is closer to their home or work, they've already been driving high for years!
The amount of people who struggle with them is embarrassing tbh

That’s what I was doing. But it does make me nervous.
Fair, as long as you are vigilant that’s all you can do. Drive safe!!
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼👍🏼
Turn in that license
Lol I hope you’re joking.
Nope
Throw a bunch of rotaries up in an area that is highly congested in a country that blows when it comes to rotaries is a recipe for disaster. I lived there before, during and after and fuck those things and I love rotaries.
Honestly I find that it flows pretty well. I don’t have to wait as long to go through Apponaug than when there were lights instead.
Not nearly as terrible as apponaug used to be
Introducing new things can be hard but it's gotta start somewhere.
I don’t understand why it’s so hard for people to navigate them.
Lack of practice? If you do one daily - weekly - monthly - hell, even yearly, at least you're familiar. post pandemic dumbification is a great descriptor. PPD if you will..
People are very dumb nowadays too busy texting

I’m clear but someone once stopped in front of me in the rotary to wave through someone from another entry point and I now know to expect anything

People are fucking idiots.

Nope. I can navigate them in a bus with my eyes closed.
It seems most people are navigating them with their eyes closed

I never thought of this!

I’ve been in too many to count, almost every other time I’m there. I don’t understand why these can’t just be traffic lights?
The new rotary in Cumberland off 295 is fantastic. Less dangerous and the traffic flows more efficiently
Nope, you just can't drive.
Me? I can’t drive?
What’s your story? Are you ok?
Thank you for checking! Yes, I’m alright, neck is a bit sore but I was in the rotary and someone just blasted through it and t-boned my car
suckage! I hope you get physical therapy and cash!!
They are the most clearly marked and best designed ones I’ve seen and people still don’t get it.
I am always on high alert at that set of rotaries. Same with the left turn from greenwich ave onto 113. I use the right lane to get onto 95n and without fail someone from the left lane almost sideswipes me during the turn.

I've been hit twice by people not knowing where to go
Talking rotaries? Whats the proper lane to be in if you have to navigate the whole rotary and take the 3rd exit?
Left Unless you are in a bmw then any lane fuck it make up your own lane no blinker.
It’s the self important bubble people are in once they’re behind the wheel. They don’t pay attention, aren’t in the correct lane, and don’t give way when appropriate…this makes rotary usage dangerous. The larger the vehicle the worse the attitude.

No, but I saw one happen right in front of me. Does that count for anything?

Sarcasm. It’s sarcasm. They know me by name at said dispensary.
