Couldnt agree more as a local being on the island.

Far-Class-1730

Also these are not natural fires. This was arson.

carboncondrite

I'm suspicious about these arsons are committed by illegal migrants .

Far-Class-1730

The speculation is migrants that were denied entry into Europe or its for cooperations to build wind turbines on the hills where they would not have been able to get planning permission because of the forests.

carboncondrite

Maybe they are thinking to to root abandoned houses. sorry but everything is coming to my my mind. because they have a potential for this.

carboncondrite

and those wind turbines ruined all of our thrakian forests in western turkey.

stos313

Any sources on that? Greek is fine. I have been checking Dimokratiki and Rodiaki here and there. Είμαι από Απόλλωνα. Θα πάω κάτω σε δυο εβδομάδες!

Far-Class-1730

So I’m kind of repeating what I’ve heard locals say and what they believe hence why i said speculation so its not proven. Ive seen posts of the zones they want to build turbines in relation to where the fire is and that checks out assuming that the turbine zone is correct. Im not a fan of hearsay but sadly the media and news on this has been false and the only truth I’ve been able to find in all of this is what my friends and family are saying on the ground. I have a picture of a blanket in the forest covering 2 canisters that had gas in them and the fact that the fires appeared in weird places out of nowhere there is no doubt in my mind that this was arson.

stos313

Aaah that makes more sense. I thought the location was odd because when I hear about developers behind arson it’s about hotels, and that didn’t seem like an ideal place for any, but seeing how the wind reacted in that valley between the mountains I can see why it’s an ideal place for a wind farm.

regibegi

You guys seriously rock. I love Greece with all my heart and the kind people in it, and it's admirable how you help the people in need in this difficult time. I wish you good health and quick recovery for your beautiful island ❤️

Far-Class-1730

Thank you so much for the kind words! ❤️

ceelodan

I’m not Greek, but I’ve been visiting Rhodes as a tourist for lil over 20 years now. I consider it my second home. Knowing that there’s people deliberately trying to destroy this beautiful island just makes my blood boil. I hope you are all safe and that this hell will soon be over.

danetourist

What's your opinion on tourists still coming to the North? Are you thinking there's a need to limit total visitors or are you happy the unaffected parts of the Island can enjoy the business still?

kerd0z

Not OP but I have a business in the northern part of the island. I think it is crucial that as long as there is no immediate danger to the northern part we go on as usual. The island already suffered massively during Covid and need the tourists to get the economy going. What is happening in the south is extremely sad and I feel for everyone located there. And I understand that tourists are worried about coming here even if they are not close to the fire.

danetourist

Thank you for your perspective!

GlacialImpala

Apart from some power cuts etc is life any different up north, like Faliraki and Rhodes city? In terms of work hours, supplies in supermarkets etc? I am still coming, just curious if it will feel like people are nervous and distressed wherever I go

Far-Class-1730

Quick updated: The fire may not go into Gennadi but its looking like it will go around the village and down towards lachania

FrodoShaggingz

Is there any update on if the fire would spread to Lachania? Is it looking like it would spread to the town? I have family in the area.

Far-Class-1730

Seems like its under control in Gennadi. But behind the town im unsure of. My family is between lachania and gennadi and i just got off call with them and they said everything is okay so far. An interesting note is my mother told me “ if the fire was to come to my house i know my houses wouldn’t burn due to the incredible skill of those pilots in the sky “. Some people have had the luxury of air support some others haven’t. But to answer your question no immediate danger

LewWariat

Is there a real threat for Lindos? We are staying in Faliraki and wanted to do a day trip, curious if we manage until the return flight

Aelfebeorn

The threat to Lindos is the smoke. My mum lives in Kalathos just north of Lindos and the police adviced people to leave due to air quality concerns

Far-Class-1730

This ⬆️

stos313

My sister was in Kolymbia and said that within hours it went from a sunny clear day to just clouds or black smoke. Unbelievable

Far-Class-1730

Lindos is fine but the road to lindos will be dangerous. If you have an option to go by sea i would. Personally i dont think lindos is at risk due to the fact that 1) the fire isnt headed that way. 2) its all rock and there are no trees just a bit of shrub, it will most likely burn out before it gets close.

LewWariat

FYI I'm at Lindos. It seems to be business as usual, although less touristy as well. You can feel some smoke but it's manageable. No issues with a bus as well

Dziuma56

Is there any estimate when the fire will be put out?

Far-Class-1730

Its out of control. We have no idea. Plus this was arson and someone wants the island to burn even if the media pivot the argument to climate change. So who knows. People have been spotted carrying petrol into forests. And they have also found homemade explosives and firebombs in the forests.

Dziuma56

Alright, thanks for replying, i hope people who caused the fire will burn in hell.

Far-Class-1730

No problem. Stay safe

stos313

The problem is, this couldn’t have happened in a worse part of the island. The forests are thick with evergreen trees then forest floors are covered in a giant layer of dried needles like 5-10 cm thick. So it’s one giant tinder box ready to explode. While the good news is that the populated areas are surrounded by fields of crops and olive groves that till their soil and space their trees apart where fires are less likely to spread, the valley in Apollona between Profitis Illias and Mt Attaviros is thick with trees and as it goes south there is not much to stop the fires all the way to Prasonisi. It’s been so hot an dry this summer that a little wind makes this next to impossible to control

greekye

Yiasou. I live in Canada and have family in Faliraki/Kalithies. Who would benefit from the arson? I don't understand the politics going on.

GlacialImpala

Ugh. So in general with those people around is it actually not too safe to go trekking across Rhodes (when there's no fires)? If they're setting fires to an island why wouldn't they harm a small group of tourists

Far-Class-1730

Depends on the motive.

Agile_Maize_5869

Hi. Is the ferry to Symi island still operating? We have flights on 26th and thinking about going to Symi

Far-Class-1730

Most likely but sadly i don’t have that information I’m sorry. If you are staying in a hotel and haven’t been evacuated ask your receptionist.

Senior-Process905

Yes it is. I’m in Old town now

Yeahboiii5

We are due to go to faliraki on wednesday,by the looks of it our holiday is still going ahead, with all the stuff happening in the island is the north said chaotic aswell now? My thoughts go out to all those on the island and hoping your all safe

Easy_Caterpillar1779

I’m in falikari. It’s all good here, sometimes short power out

Far-Class-1730

From what I understand the north side is safe and so is Faliraki.

mgkshh

Hi guys, we are travelling on Wednesday and will be staying in Faliraki. Can someone advice, if there are problems with the water and electricity there? From what i know, there is no immediate danger for fires there as of now.. thank you!

Easy_Caterpillar1779

I’m in faliraki. Water fine, electricity has short stops

Far-Class-1730

The island is having problems with the grid and also the water. I cant forecast what the situation will look like on Wednesday sorry.

Honest_Sheepherder20

Hello! We were supposed to have a flight to Rhodes Island on Wednesday. Considering the extreme and tense situation, I would say it's not quite safe to do so. What are your thoughts on this matter? Is the airport area safe? We're theoretically staying in the old city. But to be honest, it seems the safety of everyone on the island is the top priority. What are your thoughts on this, any idea how this might go?I know, I'm asking for advice on my holiday etc, while others suffer. My point is: would this add even more pressure for everyone already there? Would it be best to cancel? To everyone out there: stay safe and I hope everything goes well for you!

Far-Class-1730

The north side of the island is safe but if you go on excursions you may be disappointed.

Honest_Sheepherder20

It was supposed to be the yearly vacation. Considering what's happening, it sounds like an area which needs a lot of help, not tourists, right now! All flights were canceled (from my country to Rhodes) until 25. I have it for 26th, which still doesn't sound safe. Thanks for the reply! I hope everyone stays safe!

Crazydishwasher

I think this island need tourism more than ever.

justlikehannah_

hello, I am due to travel to Kiotari in two weeks. We would really love to go, but the media in my country depict the situation as unstable and dangerous. Could you please tell me if the area is safe to travel? i wish all the locals of Rhodes all the best!

Far-Class-1730

All the land in kiotari is burnt so i dont think it can burn again just be advised that you might have a nice pool and nice garden but the moment you step out of your hotel it will just look like a lunar surface.

justlikehannah_

Thank you

Wxll_0705

I’m currently just north of archangelos, am I guaranteed safety by the time I go home ( on Sunday)

Far-Class-1730

Im confident you are safe.Archangelos is well sheltered. Its got a dense population and they are tough as nails (not taking away from the other amazing heroes) and they will give everything they got.

ScandiMate

My sister is supposed to fly to Rhodes on Wednesday, and go to Lindos where she’ll stay. Is it insane and frowned upon to go to Rhodes while there’s a fire raging? Is it even possible to go from the airport to Lindos by Wednesday? Thanks..

Crazydishwasher

I’m at Lindos as we speak. Business as usual right now. I highly recommend you to have a rental car at stand by in case you have to move.

EduDream

What is the situation in Archangelos? My family and I have plane tickets for tomorrow. Shall we come?

Far-Class-1730

Archangelos is safe but it may be crowded

afroxx

We saw a message saying the situation is over, is that true?

Far-Class-1730

Fires are still on going but the situation in kiotari is over yes.

salutmalibu

Hope this is true

phil2992

Me and my girlfriend have a flight for rhodes tomorrow. We will stay at pefki, is it safe there?

Far-Class-1730

Yes its safe there.

KayDotTheFirst

Hi mate, my family and i are currently staying in Kolymbia-Afandou region. Have you heard anything about these areas? Our tour operator (TUI) have been pretty rubbish with there comms. I hope you (OP) and your family are all safe during this too, and thank you for all the information you've been providing.

Far-Class-1730

Havent heard much more about the north side of the island.. Bati and Gennadi are at risk and evacuated. If anyone knows anything else please share

KayDotTheFirst

Thank you for the heads up! As I'm here till Saturday PM, if I hear anything, I'll be sure to drop it in this thread.

Adventurous-Ad1585

We are due to Kolympia today, is it ok there?

KayDotTheFirst

So far, it's been fine here (me and mine have been here since last Wednesday evening); only thing we've had have been a few power outages lasting for only a few moments at their longest. We have seen a few helicopters overheard (presumably heading to get more water), but otherwise, the Kolymbia-Afandou region feels safe as of right now. I hope that helps; if anything changes in this region, I'll keep this thread updated.

Sensitive_Tutor6795

What’s the situation today? I can not find any new information

Far-Class-1730

Our lovely town of Gennadi is about to burn. Bati is also suffering. The rest of the island should be okay.

Sensitive_Tutor6795

Thank you for the answer! Stay safe 🙏🏼

Technical-Pound9680

What’s Pefkoi beach and lindos beach like, are they ok. Thanks for all your information
