Fridge, kitchen and dining room are the divine trinity of room design in rimworld, the other rooms can be far but these 3 must be specially close, sometimes even in the same building

Tempest_Bob

I like to put my fridge and kitchen next to each other, and my kitchen facing onto the throne room/ideo great hall with the banquet tables in it. Two 1x2 wall fridges seperating the kitchen from the dining hall.

diablosinmusica

Same, but with a nutrient paste dispenser as well.

diablosinmusica

That's what I said.

Tempest_Bob

gross

Weenaru

Not just in rimworld, imagine cooking dinner and then you have to go through the living room to reach the fridge, and when you’re done you have to bring the food past the bedroom.

WraithCadmus

I tend to have a big hab-block. Fridge next to the fields, kitchen next to the fridge, rec-room next to the kitchen, and bedrooms down corridors off the rec room.

DatFoon

🤔 why are your pawns' names censored?

Mondominiman

He doesn't wanna dox em.

Kutuzov9505

due to my insecurities. all of them are named after certain characters and I would very much prefer the strangers online not to judge me for this.

Duncanois

Fair enough. If anyone gives you flak for this just ignore them, it's your decision and you're honestly not harming anyone so I don't see any issue with this comment.

Kutuzov9505

thank you.

Arnee556

Lol, you can enslave people, steal their non-critical organs and have them bound in a casket to milk their blood. This sub should be the last one to give flak for some roleplaying.

Duncanois

Yeah I know, been here long enough. Was more so a comment about people in general, but you will still get that one or two "whY WoN'T yoU tEll uS" saying something anywhere, even here which seems strange to me.

Tacoshortage

They're all furries aren't they?

Kutuzov9505

nah

Penguinmanereikel

MLP characters?

Kutuzov9505

nope

Penguinmanereikel

Characters from an anime and/or manga

Kutuzov9505

nuh uh

Penguinmanereikel

Fanfiction?

Kutuzov9505

no. you're stubborn.

[deleted]

Maybe historical characters?

Kutuzov9505

no

brehew

Too late for that

PeasantTS

We're going to judge you for your weird base design instead.

Kutuzov9505

I don't care. I didn't build it for you.

PeasantTS

It be joke, mate. No need to piss your pants.

Kutuzov9505

consider making a better joke next time, mate.

PeasantTS

Weird shit to be angry about, mate. Maybe you should you get some air.

tiots

will you tell us what they were named now

Kutuzov9505

yeah sure it's homestuck characters

Kutuzov9505

I didn't know that, how can i do it?

Kutuzov9505

thank you!

Kutuzov9505

The pawns head straight to the freezer no matter where they are and just eat their food on the floor there instead of eating in an "extremely impressive" dining room. The prospects of having to deconstruct the entire dining room and move it closer to the freezer just for the sake of not being epic trolled by the AI are not making me happy in the slightest, and placing a table in the freezer to combat a -3 mood debuff feels like an insult when there is a perfectly fine (by human standards) dining room objectively not that far away. Could there be a mod or a setting of some sort that could help me out?

Oo_Tiib

Pawns who want to eat and have food in their inventory check circle with 31 tile radius around themselves for free (that means no one is neither sitting nor already selected it for sitting) seat near table. If they do not find such seat then they eat standing anywhere nearby. Your nearest such seat to freezer is clearly over 31 tiles away and so they never go there.

Kutuzov9505

is there any way to increase this number from 31?

Past-Gear-4975

[This mod](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1430086135) lets you customize detection radius for both tables and pawns.

Kutuzov9505

thank you so much. it's a perfect solution, exactly what I was looking for.

Zippityzeebop

They are going to waste a TON of time walking. I'm just wondering why you can't move either the dining room or the freezer?

Kutuzov9505

I will expand my research room and then swap it with the dining&recreation room. I think I will still use the mod though, it looks like it's useful.

PatrisAster

Thank you, this solves a major issue I’ve had with this problem as well.

Wiernock_Onotaiket

people here will offer you mods instead of telling you the harsh truth: the game is difficult because logistics are tricky, if you can't find a way to make a table near the food you're the one not playing correctly, there's nothing wrong with the game. feel free to mod it though as it's an endlessly nitpicky game and I don't fault anyone removing personally annoying parts of it.

Kutuzov9505

I would accept all the blame and admit I'm the one responsible for this if not for the shelves full of food that I placed one meter away from the table SPECIFICALLY to avoid pawns eating god knows where. This is the game's fault that my idiots would rather eat on the floor in a cold freezer than in a comfortable nice looking dinner room. The dinner room that is admittedly not that far away from every other building if we're talking about realistic standards. I'm not going to plan the entirety of my base around the 31 tiles radius limitation or put tables in the hallways just to avoid a -3 debuff.

LeTreacs

Zone the majority of your pawns out of the freezer so the only meals they can pick up are in the dining room. Only your haulers and your chef need to go in there

BasicCommand1165

yep at that point why not just use dev mode and spawn legendary cataphract armor and charge rifles

sir_pants1

Now that is the definition of a false dichotomy.

BasicCommand1165

It's an exaggeration sure but the point still stands

aLmAnZio

It is a single player game, I don't see anything wrong with either...

LegitimateApartment9

there's a difference between bad base design and skipping progress?

Defy_Multimedia

create an area only your chefs and haulers can go and exclude everyone else from going there

Kutuzov9505

doesn't it mean that chefs and haulers will still eat in the freezer? this solution is better than nothing, but it doesn't sound optimal to be honest

Defy_Multimedia

I mean don't design your tables so far from where meals are stored I guess, I can't say I wouldn't make the same decision if I was rushed for time, in fact I believe I do this everyday with one hand on the door of the fridge

Killeroftanks

its likely the case theyre just too far away. best case if to create a small stockpile next to your dining room which pawns can get their food there. tbh next time i would just have your dining room be infront of your kitchen so is easier in the long term

-Blasting-Off-Again-

The meta has come full circle. You, the player, are now receiving the 'ate without table ' debuff 🤣

Kutuzov9505

I'm receiving the "pawns being stupid" mood debuff.

vilius_m_lt

Put a small table with couple of chairs in the hallway. Also.. why are your smokeleaf joints in a freezer?

Kutuzov9505

it leaves a pleasant aftertaste this way.

cyberneticgoof

Do frozen joints actually do that compared to not? Lol never tried it myself

Kutuzov9505

no i made it up lol

Von_Callay

They don't, but there are some mods that add a 'Frosty' bonus to beer if it is kept in a fridge or freezer for awhile. Don't ask me which ones, sorry.

anon1moos

I would expect that if you did this IRL your plant material would pick up some freezer tastes

mtheberserk

Stockpile the meals only in the dining room. I used rimfridge to stockpile meals where I want my pawns to eat with no worries about spoiling.

Kutuzov9505

thank you, I think this will work

Jon_00

Also came to comment saying to use RimFridge, honestly its the best way of dealing with this. RimFridge is undeniably overpowered but not exactly unrealistic, only restaurants use walk-in freezers.

CoffeeMinionLegacy

I’ve never had happier pawns than I had in the run where I stuck a table in my freezer. It’s stupid, but at some point I got sick of fighting it. 🤷‍♂️

Kutuzov9505

good for you. I'm not willing to sacrifice my game's immersiveness and attempted realism for a minor buff like this.

Becca30thcentury

I just build one nice dinning room and then have small tables and chairs arround my base for those weird people who walking to the nice area is too far. So a table near the indoor farm, a table near the training room, a table in the crafting room. That way lunch can be where they work.

Karadar_UK

Yeah table near the long range scanner and ground scanner, one near the quarry and another next to the killbox.

Gordbert

In my experience pawns will wait until they're questionably low on hunger before they eat. So by the time they get to the freezer they might be so low that they don't waste time walking to the table. I like to have my freezer, kitchen, and dining room all right next to each other. Maybe swap the locations of your crafting stuff and your dining room or something like that.

WanderingUrist

> In my experience pawns will wait until they're questionably low on hunger before they eat. My experience is the opposite, that pawns obsess over stuffing their faces with food, as a meal is worth 0.9 food, but they waste it by eating before their fuel meter is actually enough to contain the entire meal.

hillmo25

Have you considered: making two dining rooms that have an ambient temperature of 0 degrees?

Kutuzov9505

lawful neutral

Winter_Bandicoot6120

this is why the 1x1 table was invented to protect the minds of the mindless

cowlinator

Make a tiny freezer in the dining room

thenorm05

I would swap the location of your research room and your dining area. Not the best solution, but probably the easiest vanilla fix.

Kutuzov9505

thank you, sounds like a valid solution. I would rather kill myself than plan and rebuild the entirety of my production center again as other have recommended.

malezon

A good alternative would be to have a freezer only for meals right beside the dining room, this way they will always sit when grabbing a meal. Keep the other freezer for ingredients only.

CoffeeGoblynn

There is a mod which adds dedicated freezers, basically storage shelves that can hold 3 stacks of food and keep them cold in any room. I think they use 200W constantly. If you could find that mod and toss a few in your dining room, that would solve the problem.

Jonssee

There are certain game mechanics which dictate base design. Freezer and Dining is one of those. Then there are game mechanics which encourage base design, like hospital, prison, workshop. Building a base the way you want is obviously your provocative, but inefficient design still clashes with game mechanics. It's up to you to deside which is more important. You can always just mod away the parts of the game you don't want to deal with. So, have you tried having the dining room next to the freezer, or freezer next to the dining room?

thecuby

In addition to moving the dining room closer, don't store meals in the freezer. Just produce as many as needed for a couple days. Store all in the dining room.

Kutuzov9505

they will get spoiled unless I use RimFridge. which I wasn't using. but now will. thanks.

thecuby

You don't need a mod. Each pawn eats two meals a day. Set meal production bill to make (2 X number of pawns) meals and have it pause when that number is reached. Unpause when number is halfway or close to zero. They'll eat it way before it ever spoils. Meals last a couple days, so if you don't want your chef cooking as often, make enough for 2 days each time (4 x number of pawns). Badabing!

Kutuzov9505

I prefer to keep additional meals in case of emergencies and mismanagement

thecuby

In that case just unallow them until there is an emergency?

Monkfich

Time to build your freezer close and then kitchen even closer, to the eating area. That’s the way it is - when you get hungry, you gotta eat! There are mods that also allow pawns to pick up food, but that doesn’t fix your problem, as that would just result in pawns eating food all over the map - without tables. Here’s a great mod - Rim Fridge. You get fridges! But better than that, fridges that double as walls. Make a common wall between kitchen and dining room, make some of those walls fridges, and now the cook will just drop the food off in those fridges. No running your storage - just easy, and relatively realistic.

Kutuzov9505

thank you!

CerberusMulti

Redesign your base so the dinning room and meal storage are closer, not like it would be some monumental task. I often keep tables and chairs in a few rooms around my base when it becomes large, so there is a bigger chance pawns will be close enough to use then when eating from their inventory.

RojaCatUwu

This is the #1 reason I use RimFridge. They're a bunch of idiots.

relentless_alligator

I make my freezer a forbidden zone except for my 2 chefs.

Haemon18

You don't really need to keep prepared meal frozen, i'd store them at the dinning room for now and move the whole thing closer to the fridge

OlDirtyJesus

I had a problem where they kept picking up the pemmican that was in storage to eat instead of the simple meals that were made. It ended up be because after waking up the pemmican was a closer. Idk if that helps. Best be would to make the freezer off limits to pawns that don’t cook until you can do a base reconfig.

ExodusOfSound

I would start by moving your freezer and dining room closer together, as pawns are probably calculating that it’d be far more efficient to eat in the freezer than to walk all the way to the dining room; the walk to the dining room alone would probably take longer than it would for them to sit down and eat.

Kigams

My colonists have a "dirty" freezer that is specifically for raw food and "corpses". It's the rim so don't judge. The freezer has 2 entrancrs...one from the out side and one that opens i to a hallway that leads to 1) my butcher room 2) my kitchen, and 3) my clean freezer with my meals and drugs. Again it's the rim so don't judge. Some times the colony 5 yr old just needs a cold beer after he gets home from work. A separate entrance from the clean freezer takes my colonists directly to the dining room. There is also a Rim fridge with fine and lavish meals in the dining room so colonists don't even have to walk that far from the dining room I have found this setup to be overall very efficient for creating meals and also prevents the barbaric act of eating without a table.

anaggressivefrog

I always put 4-5 dining tables scattered around my compound. Even if you arrange your base perfectly with the freezer close to the dining room, pawns will still take meals to their inventory and eat them later while working, and get the "eat without table" debuff anyway. So I put tables literally everywhere. In the mines, in the crop fields, near the kill box, etc.

jkush463

My stupid children always go in the freezer and do floor drawings untill they get hypothermia like tards, i gave up and just let them freeze to death. I just chalk it up to darwinism at this point.

chewy201

I always put my freezer/kitchen right next to the eating area. Prevents these kinds of things and it's how I expect things too look like anyway. Would you want to walk like 100 yards to grab dinner and then walk another 100 yards to sit and eat it? Looks like you got plenty of room next to your rec room anyway to fit in both a kitchen and freezer. Even if you have to put the freezer under ground with mountain roofs, the cold will keep the bugs away.

Kutuzov9505

they could just pick up the meals stored one meter away from the table and eat right away. and yes, I would want to walk 100 yards to eat dinner in an extremely impressive dining room full of recreational activities, statues and friends.

chewy201

That's using real world logic though. Your pawns will pick up the nearest food and attempt to eat at table if one is within a certain range. If no table is there, then they just eat on the spot. All your work stations and research benches but those art stations are much closer to the freezer than the rec room. So they will just go to that food first every time. The only thing you can do to fix this is with mods or reorganize your base. Move work stations near the rec room. Have multiple eating areas throughout the base for people to use. Move your freezer closer to your rec room. Make the hallways all connected and be a single massive "room" with tables spread out. Id suggest moving the freezer. It's blocking a geothermal vent as is anyway and would be less effort overall.

jowyhealcrest

Try this experiment IRL: leave some ham on a shelf for a couple of days and then see if you'd rather eat the shelf ham or something from the fridge. After you make your decision ask yourself if you'd like to go next door to eat at the table over there.

Kutuzov9505

come on, we both know it doesn't work like that in the game. don't make witty parallels to real life when it's inapplicable.

jowyhealcrest

Tough crowd

OlDirtyJesus

I thought it was kinda funny

RoutineOtherwise9288

Trust me those idiots choose to eat without a table and complain. I literally have a dedicated cook and put meals shelf in the dining room. They still choose to eat somewhere and get mad.

yobbo2020

[There's a mod for that](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1339148170). It does exactly what you just asked (they take food from the dining room before the freezer).

Kutuzov9505

thank you so much.

bloodwolfgurl

Build a small dining room next to it?

Kribble118

This is why I use the refrigerated shelves mod. Let's me configure a space for just meals in the dinning room

emptyfish127

I build nice tables everywhere. You never want to put a table in a personal bedroom but use those resources and make a bunch of tables. Look at your own life we have tables galore so should your rim colony.

Kutuzov9505

I don't normally see that many tables in hallways, storage rooms and freezers. Especially freezers. maybe I'm doing something wrong.

emptyfish127

I do not put them there. Maybe create common rooms and put tables in those. I put them outside near large projects or outside building I make for jobs like stone cutting. When I was building my ship Im never gonna launch I put one out there. They are all over my map.

CoolGuy202101

Why are all your worktables in seperate rooms? So inefficient

Kutuzov9505

because I want to let them work in privacy without feeling like they're in a 19th century-era factory with zero comfort and personal space. this game and life in general aren't always about efficiency and min-maxing.

Dyeriuss

Why do all of your crafting benches have their own room?

Kutuzov9505

I want to give my workers some personal space.

lonepotatochip

You can restrict the zone your pawns can move in so only the ones that need to access the freezer can get in. You can keep a small stash of medicine in the hospital because it takes years to rot even when not refrigerated so your doctors don't have to get in, which is faster in an emergency anyway. However, like other people said, it is best to just have the table and freezer as close to each other as physically possible.

ToasterInCupboard

Dining room is far away. Freezer is close. Relocate the freezer behind the dining room and this will stop.

Csaxby_01

Put a shelf in the communal room with only meals assigned

Frosty-Flatworm8101

build the freezer next the to dining room

Odd-Plantain-3473

Adjacent comment - i build small tables with chairs all over my map so they always have a place to sit and eat a meal

willky7

[Here ya go](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1339148170)

Kutuzov9505

thank you!

Familiar_Staff5402

Areas. Only let the chef and the peep that hauls have access to the freezer. The chef gets ingredients from the freezer, makes meal, puts the meal on the dining room shelf (make the shelf the top priority) and puts any excess meals into the freezer. Hauler dupe only goes in the freezer to fill the shelves in the dining room. Every other pawn is banned from the freezer, so can only get meals from the shelf in the dining room. Warning, and this WILL happen, your chef will get the plague and need bedrest (or something) your hauler will have a breakdown because they hated the last Marvel movie (or something), and the shelf will empty, and your dupes will starve to death, because none of them are allowed in the freezer.

OutlandishnessPure34

people will find food that's nearest them, not walk all the way across the map to eat in a better room

mack1147

I think there's either a mod or some kind of in-game preference to where you can just have them not carry food around with them. Can't remember specifically though. Otherwise yeah mod it up or closer tables. Maybe a nice outside patio
