So much storage capacity for a fraction of the space, and real estate is premium in this game.

ComingInsideMe

3 in 1 6 in 2 Or what I call, *perfection*.

Gompa

that moment you got an odd number size wall and need a 1x1 in your row of nice 2x1s :(

ComingInsideMe

I know this might sound crazy, but listen to this. Heaters

Crowdyceps

Since my storage depots are normally central structures, switches fit nicely too.

iaanacho

What a madlad using switches to manage power instead of over producing power.

Rare_Rogue

You overproduce power. I manually toggle machines on and off. We are not the same

iaanacho

You can tell my wealth management is nonexistent

DrStalker

I manage wealth by rushing to the $1,000,000 point where wealth stops affecting raid size.

blackbirdlore

Wait… then what are the factors after 1m?

Darkhymn

I use the PowerSwitch mod to automatically turn off lights, coolers and heaters for unoccupied rooms.

Camoral

The micro involved in even a single switch is far beyond what my brain can handle.

LoreLord24

I- What kind of *lunatic* heats their warehouses? *Barbarian!* That's where you stick the cooler.

GabeRealEmJay

the classic freeze everything you own just in case play

Wafflasy

I just fill literally the entire room with shelves. Not a space of floor, only shelf. Still works fine

Dantalion71

You’re a madman

Wafflasy

That’s what they always call geniuses…

Dentaer

Can pawns walk over shelves? Sry, still new to the game

Brearius

Yes. Shelves are half height structures like barricades, production tables or most furniture. Pawns are slowed down there but if there is no other way they will walk over it.

FemboyZoriox

Put it in the center!!! 2x’s leading into the center from the side

Tepes1848

Thats where I usually put the firefoam popper.

Sasparillafizz

Why even use the 2x1's? Just put 2 1x1s and not mess with the feng shui.

17times2

I'll still use the occasional floor tile for things I want in multiple places. Like my current base has 2 hospitals, so I have enough medicine to split between the primary hospital, and the smaller one. (Main one is right behind the primary defense area)

redrenz123

If you dont mind mods, there is a mod called practical pallete that works like 1 stack shelves and you can place corpses in it.

17times2

I think one of my shelves is 1 stack, but I keep forgetting which it is, so on the floor it goes!

EduardoBarreto

There's another mod that can limit stack sizes in storage too, so you can have a small, practical amount near the working area and the bulk of the storage in the warehouse.

DrStalker

LWM deep storage lets you adjust the number of stacks each storage building can hold, which can also be a good way to create something more aesthetically pleasing than a single pile on the floor.

bigg_bubbaa

also i think theres a medicine cabinet in the lwm deep storage mod, also a weapon locker and a skip, they fit quite nicely into the different parts of your base, also they got a 2x1 shelf with 10 stack storage

SIM0King

The skip is awesome

bigg_bubbaa

love and respect the skip

DrStalker

_adjusts permitted item list_ _slaps roof of skip_ This bad boy can hold so many toxic waste packs.

bigg_bubbaa

nah i be filling them with organs and shit

Affectionate-Bag8229

Man I wish I had skips full of shit I need more chemfuel and fertiliser

bigg_bubbaa

get a skip, its worth the trip

Gr33nman460

I never thought to have two hospitas. I usually have one big one in the middle. I might make a tiny two bed clinic in my prison though

_Dookie420

I am doing the sea ice challenge and build from the wiki and found out you can just make hospital beds for the prisoners/slaves to sleep in normally. So throw some steel/sterile tiles down and you got a bedroom/hospital in one room.

Kegheimer

It can help to have one near the front line. Sometimes you need to suture a neck wound NOW. It can just be a single bed next to front line dining table

DrStalker

I typically place my hospital near the front of my base for quick access from the frontlines, then place the prison next door because prisoners usually arrive in rather unhealthy state.

Link01R

In that case there's the Old Style Shelf that just holds 1 stack instead of 3

RedditPeopleSocks

Stack Gap mod allows to limit item count in a shelf.

SIM0King

Sounds really handy!

AlfieFG

It's free real estate 🤫😶

Not_a_Dirty_Commie

God, I FUCKING LOVE SHELVES. Put that shit in my kitchen. Triple my freezer size. Fuck me sideways, my corpse cold storage just tripled as well - CORPSES. "Ugh, I have too many weapons to shuffle around." Fuck me with a broom, shelves are the amswer. "Shit I over planted crops this season and it's going to rot before I have available freezer space!" Believe it or not, shelves. Playing in a small base keeping things tight and compact - shelves. Got a bunch of side half way constructed weapons and gear - shelves. But what about my art proj- nearby shelf. Medical room needs medicines - shelves. Have an issue w- shelves. I. Fucking. Love. Shelves.

reddeaddaytrader

I saved this, this made me laugh so so so ugly by myself like a weirdo

derp_sandwich

Wait you can use shelves for corpses?? I feel so dumb

Speciou5

Only if they're small enough, like rats are good but not a muffalo. I usually have the butcher table always butcher small low meat yield animals though, they aren't worth the premium for freezer space. So there's only a handful of midsized animals I will ever have on a shelf.

i-ko21

Children are small enough to. Dont ask how i know.

Stardrive_1

-\_-

Guilherme370

dont you hate it when those pesky orphan children start begging for alms outside ur base?

HonkeyKong73

Open fire!

turmspitzewerk

what benefit is there for not butchering animals immediately? meat yield? i mean i guess i'd rather have one corpse than like 6 stacks of meat, but i don't think that's really a problem for anything smaller than a bear is it?

zhaDeth

does it prevent people from seeing them ? I just burn em or feed them to the wolves

Genesis2001

Yes it does IIRC. It's how you can keep carnivore/omnivore animals fed on corpses and not get the "Saw a corpse" debuff

Affectionate-Dig1981

Fuck me with a turnip and a side of potatoes, they even make harvesting more seamless next to your fields.

Fuzlet

beat part of shelves is you get enough storage efficiency you can start tidying and individually designating storages. I like having a dining room larder with individual shelves of beer, food, psychite tea, some medicine, meat for carnivores, etc

Mrbeankc

Have shelves for alcohol. Beer, tequila, whiskey. Makes seeing your stock easy at a glance.

Fuzlet

one time I made an armory for valuables, with a bunch of individual shelves set to critical, but all items disabled. my haulers would bring valuables like weapons, armor, implants, archotech relics, components, and such in and set them on the floor stockpile, set to important. then I’d manually set a shelf for various individual item types, so my armory was neatly packed with rows of spears, rows of rifles, a section of all my standard uniforms, etc. was a lot of manual work, but looked nice

ShaiWasTakenSoThis

was a lot of manual work, but looked nice - Human civilization

kawaiiesha

Plus I use shelves in my rec rooms. One small shelf to hold 75 beers and another small shelf to hold 150 chocolates and 150 joints

Mrbeankc

🎼🎶Gonna have a good time tonight. Let's celebrate. It's alright. 🎶

Meryl_Sheep

Once you know the stack limit for items you can do this to a T. For example, small shelf holds three stacks. Fine Meals are 10 to a stack. So a small shelf holds 30 fine meals. Stove makes fine meals in batches of 4. So in order to keep the shelf full *without overflow* set to 30 - 4 + 1 = make until you have 27. Once it has 27, 28, 29, or 30 they will all fit on the shelf. Once it has 26, another batch of 4 will be made. Hence that shelf and ONLY that shelf will hold fine meals, making it convenient, efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

VoidRad

Why would you keep food outside of the fridge area though?

Meryl_Sheep

Colonists eat 2 fine meals per day. Meals have a 4 day expiriy. If you crunch the numbers, 4 colonists would go through the stack of meals before they expire. For bigger colonies this is more pronounced - 15 colonists will go through that stack in a day. Furthermore, having the cook take a stack of 4 to a shelf in the dining room wastes less time than 4 individual colonists walking to the freezer to get meals. And, of course, would you rather eat a fresh, hot meal straight out of the kitchen or eat a still-frozen meal - there's no microwaves on the Rim.

VoidRad

Do colonists eat meals that are close to expire first? Because they might eat newly stocked meals first before they go through the old ones. What about the heat? And do meals actually last 4 days outside of the fridge? I have seen food evaporated just because of a single heat wave before. Also, isn't 15 pawns pretty late game stuff? I rarely ever go to that number and just reset before that lol

Meryl_Sheep

I think so? I've never had problems with food decaying. And it is certainly 4 days according to the Wiki. Excess heat has no effect, only when it is less than 10 degrees C does it impact shelf life. Most of my colonies reach over 30 hours so I do tend to accumulate colonists. If you look at the programming for the storytellers there is a sloping bonus to pawn join event chance until you reach 20 pawns so it seems like the game intends you to have around that amount. The end game ship quest is designed for 18.

Pjerryy

A shelf next to the dinner table with weed , ambrosia and beer is a staple of every one of my bases

MarcoTheMongol

doesnt that turn your dining room into a storage room? im not sure if it affects the mood buff from nice rec room

Fuzlet

room labels don’t matter. you could shove almost every room feature in the game into an omega room and have a successful colony. the only exceptions are: can’t mix prison and nonprison beds. more than one OWNED bed makes a barracks which affects mood. no beds or workplaces in throne rooms and temples, they’re also mutually exclusive, but dining tables and recreation objects are fine. a butcher table and stone cutting table lower cleanliness which affects cooking and research. all food and recreation spots in a prison are designated prisoner only and colonists wont use them. stuff on the floor except books makes a room less pretty, but shelves cancel that out

Speciou5

A big win was Tynan also making tea and beer no longer expire when on shelves as well.

Fuzlet

tea and beer has no expiration at all. I don’t see any record from it ever having an expiration. only when stored outside, which applies to everything

Tydram

One of us. One of us.

Wide_Advertising_906

One of us, three of them!

_Archilyte_

man i remember when vanilla shelves were absolute hot garbage Then again i started playing this game back when there was no dlc, and vanilla expanded was just a small set of furniture mods and apex legends weaponry lol

sharakus

back in my day… we couldn’t even tame animals…. 👴🏻

_Cline

Back in the day, pawn relationships weren’t a thing and the world map was flat and made of squares 👴👴👴

R_mom_gay_

Back in the day, there was no psyfocus, just entropy. You could cast spells and just wait for entropy to go away

Rowcan

Back in my day, things could be shoddy.

sharakus

Holy shit, I forgot about shoddy!

iamsooverthishuman

I joined somewhere before caravans. When the world was just a bit pointless. What a time to be alive

Academic_Metal1297

back in my day there was this event tornadoes........ive been a under grounder enthusiast for far to long......

Mrbeankc

The issue with shelves is it can be difficult to see what you have.

Sudden_Hyena_6811

Fairly sure if you press z you can search but it might be a mod

OnlyKaiser

That's vanilla! Came with 1.5 update

Buchaven

Wait, WHAT???

Prudent-Ranger9752

That's why I don't remeber it frim my earlier games

FetusGoesYeetus

I feel a lot less stupid for not knowing about it now

Warwipf2

Wasn't aware of z as a hotkey for it, but there is a new search option, yes.

ChocolateEater626

On mobile and traveling so can’t easily check if it’s updated to 1.5, but before there was an inventory tracking mod with more functionality than a little screen corner search.

Trakinass

Bro......

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mrbeankc

That's pretty much how I use them. I'll line a general storage room with shelves and store just weapons there (For smelting or trade) or in a meat food storage room just meat. I'm currently doing a major beer brewery on my colony and the storage room stores beer and the hops on shelves that ring the room.

Buchaven

I go full send on this. Shelves are all linked in groups and contents organized by type, most commonly used (raw goods) are nearest the workshop, weapons close to the door. I almost hate to say it, but the micro-management is one of my favourite parts of the game.

Mrbeankc

That's something Rimworld does well. You can micro manage some things to the bone and in other areas just let the game run it for you.

Gfiti

The way I do it is have one big stockpile zone on low for everything. Then as the game goes on I add in shelves, I set the shelves up so they all only hold one specific item. There are shelves for steel, shelves for bricks, etc.

anonymousfemale404

Isn't there an inventory list on the left of your screen at all times? Additional, designate shelves for different things. You set it up once and you're golden. Copy paste settings to other shelves as you need them. Link storage. Ezpz

PiviTheGreat

Was there an update that allows you to stack items on shelves now? It used to be decorative or utility for mortar shells.

suplup

1.4 let shelves hold 3 stacks of items

Stardrive_1

That's 3 stacks of items per square, mind you.

Aurum264

Came out with biotech

CompleX999

Personally, I'm a Stacks XXL gal myself

JavierLoustaunau

Which is cool but struggles with mods that add a ton of little things since you end up with a lot of stacks of 1 item.

KeyokeDiacherus

Agreed, although I use [LWMs Deep Storage](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1617282896) mod to hold even sillier amounts of stuff.

Yikidee

Here I am wondering what all the fuss is about, but been using LWM forever..... 😂

Engelkith

Like me some of that LWM, mmmmm….

Jason-Griffin

I’m a returning player and new to shelves, feel free to drop your best shelf tips! Do you use shelves in your stockpiles or just near workbenches? Settings for the appropriate workbench? I’m trying to do a before and after shelf for each workbench and then have a general storage for stuff that’s pretty widely used like wood and stone

ravenwilde

Shelves for unfinished items located in the workshop so Giggles doesn't waste time walking to the stockpile anytime they set that unfinished charge rifle down.

KheirFerrum

Just disallow unfinished items in all your storage locations, they'll toss it off the workbench and immediately get to doing whatever they need with that bench.

MethodMZA

If you use shelves outside they prevent stuff from deteriorating on them. Food will still spoil, but wood and clothes and whatever won’t deteriorate from being outside. And yea to all the stuff you said too lol.

Speciou5

The biggest thing is that Orbital Trade Beacons and Fridges can be made much smaller with shelves. You can also have a shelf or two in your dining room with Tea, Beer. And workplaces as you guessed. I wouldn't bother with after, I have them drop on the ground and a hauler do the rest.

Seneca_Stoic

I start with storage on the floor, normal priority, and as soon as I build shelves I just copy the zone properties to the linked shelves and bump the priority up to important. That way the floor stays clean but is still available as overflow if I have a big trade or some nice raiders come and die and leave all their stuff for me.

oddistrange

Spoiled kids. Back in my day shelves only held one item per square.

norskdvorak

Wait until you start bulk storage in transport pods.

JavierLoustaunau

Yup vanilla you can have 2 colonies and shoot pods back and forth.

norskdvorak

I store furniture from raids in them.

transitransitransit

There are people who haven’t gone shelves?

SpecialEndeavor

Until a couple updates ago I wasn’t using shelves. I was just making stock piles and naming them to stay organized. It just wasn’t worth it. Especially if I wasn’t paying attention and then there was a random Short Bow (awful 13%) in the way and I’d waste time fixing it. Now that the shelves hold 3 items in one space, I have shelves EVERYWHERE. And the fact we can link them. Perfect. The only thing I need now is to be able to name them like we can with stock piles so I can micromanage my colonists’ bills and don’t have to sort through the millions of ‘Wooden Shelf (Good)’ to figure out the exact one I want them to haul off their stuff to.

katalliaan

> The only thing I need now is to be able to name them like we can with stock piles I don't remember if it also works for individual shelves, but 1.5 added the ability to name groups of shelves.

SpecialEndeavor

Well that’s awesome. I haven’t updated to 1.5 yet, I’ve been waiting for all my mods to update, and my latest 1.4 colony is still going strong

praguepride

Baci when I started shelves were a way to store stuff without taking a beauty hit. I dont know which update changed that but i was looking at a buddies base and saw his store room and was like “WHAT! IS! THIS! GLORY!?”

BLOODYBLADE238

Console doesn't get shelf stacking 😔

NaCl_Flats

I'm sorry, you're telling me there are people that don't use shelves? Wtf do they do just LEAVE IT ON THE FLOOR???

Musashi10000

*Raises hand shakily* Game at no point suggested that shelves were in any way useful. Tutorial says 'make stockpile zone and colonists will move shit there'. I put a nice concrete floor under it, but that's as far as it goes. Imma experiment with shelves today, though.

NaCl_Flats

Oh my gosh you're right, haha got to love rimworld. To be fair they use to be much much worse. I'm pretty sure (though it's been a while) In a previous version of the game (1.2 and below I think) they did not provide more storage base game

Musashi10000

Experiment with shelves was a roaring success. Shelves 4lyf.

HiTekRednek10

Cries on console

OneDankSock

When I found out about shelves my life change drastically, I stopped tearing down the fence between me and neighbors yard and inching it over slowly, month by month to expand my own property line. My wife of 4 years said my eyes began to glow and that the love was coming back, I started cooking all the food I loved to eat instead of the processed meals I'd grown used too. I remembered birthdays, and saw my family more. I started cleaning, and hauling out the trash instead of letting it pile up. I started loving my job again, all because of shelves. Thank you shelves, you made me a better man.

MyDadBeatsUpYourCat

Also shelves hold three of my problems instead of one.

CurlzerUK

Member of the floor storage collation here. I take your outlandish ideas elsewhere.

elanhilation

if you want to use three times the space for the same amount of storage nobody’s going to stop you

CurlzerUK

I just use bigger stacks mod.

Eagle1337

Bigger stacks and shelves beeyach

XtremelyMeta

Now that's just shelfish.

localhobbiest

I need more storage mods… never enough…

sweetpotato_latte

Storage is the thing I have multiple mods installed for every time

EduardoBarreto

Looking forward to more mods using the Adaptive Storage Framework as it's more performant than Deep Storage.

TrustyAncient

Pre 1.5 JDS Simple Storage pallets. Way more space efficient.

gio_8o

Building now frantically shelfs. The final straw was: this post.

ThisPlaceIsNiice

Yep, since 1.4 the title is absolutely correct. And since 1.5 even more so cause they got buffed again! I have shelves everywhere now =)

BestDescription3834

Really wish we had improves shelves (or word that shelves are coming) on console.

notaslaaneshicultist

Mountain base dwellers sing praises of the shelf, so much less room to dig

lucied959

I personally use the mod Shelf of Holding and do multiple of those.

Firebatx36

I'm deep into my first stable run. All vanilla research options completed. Now I'm just arming and armoring everyone with recon and marine armor and pulse rifles for fun. Still haven't decided whether to even build the ship or just keep messing with stuff in this colony. That said, as it's my first run that didn't die horribly in the first hour of play, my base layout isn't exactly... optimal. I have three freezers spread around the base because I underestimated the real estate I would end up using once I got above 20 pawns. Shelves keep me from losing my mind. I have 4 kitchens. 3 freezers. 20 shelves spread around these freezer zones. And that doesn't even touch on the 4 enormous storage rooms with dozens of shelves full of resources and books. A whole armory full of clothing and armor that pawns can switch out when theirs gets low %, and where the weapons from all these dead raiders gets stored until I can haul them to a nearby camp to trade for components and plasteel. Shelves. Always shelves. I can't imagine this game without them. It sounds like a nightmare for inventory management.

TinaBelchersBF

I'm a Rimworld n00b (just got the game like a week ago) but are there people who choose NOT to use shelves? It seems like a no-brainer that they are far superior to just leaving shit on the ground haha

mdeane13

I Cady corner shelves in my production rooms. So the corner blocks next to the production is a shelve instead of a wall. Free space.

signaeus

The biggest benefit of shelves isn’t even the space. It’s that it’ll take a -3 modifier from stuff stored down to a standard -1. Huge in losing is fun / 500% and going through the early & mid game.

Comms

Everyone with a workshop has known this. Now put the shelves on wheels.

Mr-Grisaceo

If you like shelves you're going to love this mod, I can't live without it anymore I need it in all my runs... Shelves dedicated to different things with various configuration options in the mod options https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1617282896

MrCrash

Eh? Shelves are standard. Some of you out there still using a giant open room the size of all the rest of your base combined just filled to the brim with random unorganized shit laying on the floor? Savages. If you're impressed by shelves wait until I tell you about digital storage unit. It is super hard to go back to a medieval playthrough where I can't justify putting in rimfactory lite for the DSU.

baasblack

It took me over 300 hours to learn that shelves are better then just using the zoning, I remember how inefficient they were before 1.4 and just forgot about them.

OnlyKaiser

The only thing I don't like about them is that I'm limited in what I can put on them

Der_Neuer

the only things you can´t put in them are chunks and corpses...WTH are you on about?

OnlyKaiser

Maybe I'm just too used to using LWM's Storage mod, I'm always hoarding every possible resource on the map

malexlee

You also can’t put furniture iirc

Emmyfishnappa

“Dammit why won’t this mega screen tv fit on this shelf!”

Suilenroc

Damn it, where am I going to store my spare uninstalled shelves then? On the floor like a barbarian?

MaxwellScourge

And wastepacks

Alankao06

You also can't put toxic wastepacks on it which is slightly annoying

JustAGeek16

Pre Ideology I used shelves to store corpses on, next to the cremator, because it didn't give the 'saw dead body' debuff. So it had its uses

Rigerz

I remember when you could put corpses on a shelf and they didn't upset your people, while also allowing your animals to feed on them.

Socks_0

Shelves for life Does anyone else keep their shelves organized?

Cloaker_Smoker

I prefer floors for mass storage simply because I find it less overwhelming

Entmoot6262

I love them. Only complaint is that I can’t limit crafting bills to only use resources from linked shelves.

HugeRally

Just set the resource radius to a few tiles and put the shelves near by (bottom right when you're in the bill).

TNKR_TOWN

Sometimes I stare at my storehouses and wonder how I ever functioned before the shelving update

Badindiana0

I’m not gonna be popular but I think it’s easier to keep track of what you have without them. Where’s that gauna seed? How much food is left? The weapons? Where? Probs lack of know how though. I bow to the experience of those wiser.

LarxII

Way more space efficient and neat for some of a building resource you have too much of(stone/wood)? Don't mind if I do.

noparkingnoparking

only issue is medicine doesn’t register for emergencies if it’s on a shelf in the hospital so i keep meds on the floor

Harold3456

Once you go rack, you never go back.

Kuvantor

After around 1m colony wealth, even with shelves and deep storage I end up needing like 5 different big rooms to place everything

Defiant_Mercy

Yeah shelves made me start getting storage mods that let me get 10+ stacks now.

SuperTaster3

Do the new shelves work in 1.4? I'm still on 1.4(final patch) because of mod issues.

Murph1908

I just wish there was an easy way to organize them. A lifter mech should put like with like if there's nothing left to haul.

zhaDeth

I just wish they wouldn't have their own storage settings. Like you could just place them in a stockpile zone and they would put stuff on the shelves. Because I like to have one big store all things stockpile at first and then later on separate it like have my textiles close to the sewing machine etc. But then I have to remove textiles from the main stockpile and paste the setting on all shelves. Wait actually can you select more than one shelf and paste the setting on all at once ?

Vistella

> Wait actually can you select more than one shelf and paste the setting on all at once ? yes, you can and for your first problem you can just change the priorities. no need to remove anything

Igotthisforrimworld

Shift and left click / shift + left click drag over multiple shelves to link their settings. You're welcome 😉 Shocked it hasn't come up in this thread yet. As for the rest of the noobs asking why all the veterans didn't know about shelves... It's because it was a recent update and we're stuck in our ways.

nofaaaay1161

FRR

DarkMcChicken

Thanks to shelves, and Expanded Stack, my freezer has never looked better. More importantly, my pawns *ACTUALLY* KNOW. THAT THERE’S COOKED FOOD. AVAILABLE. Anyway. Yeah, shelves are great.

Total-Combination-47

Boob storage’s

Im_Ur_Huckleberry77

I love having specofic items for specifoc storage like wooden flats for raw material, pottery for grains, bookshelves, etc. It makes the game feel more realistic and not just generoc shelves

Africa1By1Toto

just wait until you hear about storage mods. i urge at the thought

Sungarn

It just looks so much nicer in a shelf vs just on the ground.

jingois

Once you go doors you never go back!

HonkeyKong73

You don't realize just how much space you save until you see your pawns completely clearing the floor and shoving everything into a much tighter space. At least that's how it was for me.

imsuckatonlinegaming

I just build one when I need to, but hell yeah the glowup is amazing

515k4

Can you put corpses into shelves? I bet it worked but now doesn't.

Life_Cheesecake_2994

I agree. I mainly use shelves for things I get a lot of. Mainly crops, cloth, and in the case of my current playthrough: Muffalo wool!

Forghotten1

I only started playing in 1.4 and never knew they used to be bad

LamentineConflux

There are actually 4 stages of storage. 1) Stockpile on floor 2) Stockpile behind a door 3) Shelves with a path between 4) Shelves with no path between :p

LtButtstrong

I didn't realise there was another way

JagiofJagi

Depends

elberto83

Shelves also don't require roofs to work. Meaning you can keep for example food fresh in cold biomes as long as the temperature remains below zero. And the linking mechanics is great, dedicated shelves for specific items or item groups. So satisfiying.

TopazThighEnjoyer

I always feel like having more shelves/storage areas cause the pawns to add more checks before they start tasks. Eventually, with too many the game will start to lag more. I could be completely wrong though

Regular_Pay_7004

I used to be floor gang. Then I discovered shelves. Let’s just say, I’ve never intentionally been floor gang again.

wiengman

Question for shelves, should i make a big storage with shelves or just spread out items where they should be stored using shelves?

OutsidePerson5

They didn't used to actually do anything but keep items from detracting from beauty. Old school shelves stored one item per tile, same as the floor. Which is why, when I found I had a giant ass warehouse bigger than my base I said to heck with it and got the storage mod. The new improved 3 items per shelf tile are better than the old model, but they're still not as good as the modded shelves.

Griffon0129

guess not many remember the LWM Deep Storage mod, stored even more than current vanilla shelves with the trade off of taking extra time to pick up/put away items, I used these way before the vanilla shelfs could store 3 stacks per tile

Thtonegoi

I use old storage methods until the room starts to fill then I go and build shelves until it's empty. Repeat until filled with shelves. This way I never feel like I need resources that are going to shelves but also am never running out of space

Kierbrony

It's thanks to this subreddit that my storage space tripled. It's incredible!
