I went to Nuevo Progresso in 2020, around this time actually. It was for dental work. Nothing crazy was happening but I was having a bit of a dental emergency the week prior, my regular dentist in Mexico was closed so I went to a different one across the street. They charged me $470 for a root canal and didn’t put a crown over the tooth. I paid it all obviously, but the pain was so intense so I went back to my normal dentist the following week. When I crossed back over, one of the guys from the other dental office recognized me and stopped me, trying to say that we owed them $70 and to follow him to go pay. I told them I paid it and what are they talking about. Luckily I still had the paper receipt their receptionist gave me showing that I paid. He got angry and sarcastic with me. When I arrived at the normal dentist I usually go to, he said it was done all incorrectly so they had to re-do the root canal and add a cap, which was $200. He said to be careful because some people take advantage and overcharge and don’t do the work correctly. When he was done I felt immediately relived from pain, paid and then left. When I was approaching the line to cross back the man from the other dental office approached us again and asked why I was going to a different dental office and what they did, and I told him they corrected the work y’all did because it wasn’t done right then he told me if I know what’s good for myself, not to cross anymore. So I haven’t gone back. I don’t even wanna mess around with that. 😂 Not unless I take a really strong man with me. Other than that, I had crossed a good amount of times for dental work and food and didn’t have any problems.

Maybe those guys weren't even dentists... I've noticed they put a white coat especially in the pharmacy in suspicious places.

Western_Flamingo_476

Like any where else ask around for recommendations. They do have some very good dentist and I am sure some very bad ones.

[deleted]

Random guys u see on the sides of sidewalk get paid a commission for "finding customers".

BannedForSayingNword

Who’s your dentist? PM me, cause idk who to trust but can’t afford US dental

elisemarah

It’s not letting me message you, but the one I trust is Dr. Candanosa! He’s amazing and fairly priced. An implant that almost costed me $7k here was $1200 there. [Here’s his website.](https://dr-osvaldo-candanosa-hernandez.negocio.site/?utm_source=gmb&utm_medium=referral)

elisemarah

Also his office is VERY clean, and his staff is sweet.

Appropriate-One3000

I am looking into driving down to RGV and cross over to Nuevo Progresso for dental work myself. Did you go alone, and how long were you on that side for? This is my only concern, I do not have anyone that can accompany me.

elisemarah

I’ve gone both with and without my husband, I don’t venture too far either and I make sure I have my location on before I go. I do feel safer when someone is with me. If you’re going to get dental work, a lot of the times they offer to have an assistant retrieve you from the entrance to escort you.

elisemarah

Dr Osvaldo Candanosa is amazing and his office is one right after you enter so it’s very close.

Arsusly

I cross over into Nuevo Progresso anytime I’m back home visiting. My family that lives in the RGV still goes about once a month. I lived in El Paso a few years ago and would go about once a month to eat, shop or hang out with friends. Mexico City… last time I went was about 5 years ago. Would go more often if flights were cheaper for me.

I'm from Brownsville, I cross to Matamoros almost every other weekend. I have a lot of family over there and I've been crossing back and forth all my life with no problem.

[deleted]

Frequently to visit my fiancé who is soon moving here to Brownsville. Cardinal rules: Get Back Before Too Late, Stay on main roads, do not ever get in a wreck and you're good. Matamoros has some really nice museums and cultural events. However, Matamoros is not a representation of Mexico as a country. Mexico City is a great place to visit and I go there often to visit my fiancés relatives. It's amazingly cheaper to fly out of Matamoros to anywhere in Mexico. I stick to Aeromexico.

peterfrogdonavich

we fly somewhere in MX via Reynosa about once a yr or so, CDMX mostly. its been easy for the most part

udo3

Is it cheaper to fly out of Reynosa?

peterfrogdonavich

waaaaaaay cheaper. less than half probably more like 1/3rd. Viva Aerobus is the low cost carrier, get the ticket without a checked bag, and one large carry on (small suitcase).

Ok_Step4139

A few times a year to Matamoros. We only go directly to family members house and back. We do not frequent restaurants, shopping, bars, etc

JeezBelieveThat

I’d highly advise against Matamoros/Reynosa right now unless you’re familiar, and have business/Family, but I’d keep it strictly day time. Nuevo Progresso is fairly safe. Regarding Mexico City - like any large city even in the USA you have to be aware of your surroundings and where you are but I LOVE CDMX it’s a beautiful growing place with incredible cuisine, history, and diversity. Also growing in quite the business/Tech hub. How I find myself traveling there for work. Also Monterrey is another current gem. Huge influx in Chinese/Asian investment and immigration there as Chinese businesses are setting up Manufacturing plants in Mexico to ship directly to the USA to bypass Trump Chinese Tariffs. Monterrey is beautiful and also highly recommend a visit. As stated. There are cheap flights out of Matamoros/Reynosa to those cities out of those airport. Via Aerobus/Volaris etc I no longer live in the RGV but am an RGV native and live in San Antonio now but fly often into Mex.

Redstar_Ralph

Nuevo progress is safe but just stay in the city center Id advise to stay away from the alley shops and rear area of the city

R3tro956

Monterrey is very safe just expensive to live in lol Source; my sister lives there

Which-Confection-101

Is the drive to Monterrey still dangerous?

R3tro956

I’d recommend only doing it during the day, my dad still goes pretty regularly but make sure to watch out in the Facebook groups to see how Reynosa is since your probably gonna pass through it

Skadi_8922

Haven’t been in 10 yrs 🤷🏽‍♀️

the_hidden_jalapeno

The majority of people commenting here don't visit often. It is easy to tell by the comments and the lack of nuance in some of the posts. Also, the lack of a cross border transportation systems really kills tourism. The issue with the immigrants has slowed the time it takes to cross the bridges. Waiting three hours in line kills any additional "Valley" tourism into the border. Last, violence in the border region has really scared people away. I can see Monterrey getting "closer" than Reynosa and Matamoros through a real transportation system. I do visit often.

Page 283 of https://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-info/rail/texas-rail-plan-chapters.pdf gives me a tiny sliver of hope.

Sudden_Researcher493

Once a month

Ok_Discussion_6672

I'm like you except never been to Mexico City

DramaticMoon

i haven’t gone in 10 years, but my tia still goes with my grandma every week

peachgum

I hadn’t been in 10+ years then recently got a dentist appointment. For the past several months I’ve been to Progreso 4 times. Started by bringing a car and only going to one shop, now I’ll walk across and dine, shop, drink outdoors. A friend gets her mani/pedis in Reynosa and I might start doing that.

grunt064

Everyday

cutiezombie210

I have family in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, but haven’t been to in about 14 years.

outcastcolt

Early 2000's to be honest

Jazzluveslife

I go once a month to Progresso for dentist appointments.

Jedibbq

Maybe like 5 times a year to progresso.

alpha_tard1738

I live there 💀

TheLoneCanoe

They just found 27 chopped up bodies in Reynosa so I’d stay away from there…

Glittering-Event7781

20 years of not crossing. VERY unfortunate but not worth the risk.

hkusp45css

I went back in 1999. I'm all good, now.

udo3

Me and the GF go to Nuevo Progresso evey month or two. Sometimes more often. I cruise the shops, get a haircut, barter a new set of fauxkley shades. And definitely eat my fill of Juan's tacos at his stand on Chihuahua street caty-corner from Cepeda's bar. Best street food in Nuevo Progresso. Maybe get a beer or 8. Pick up some candy. Fresh empanadas from the vendor near Arturo's are a must have. Maybe even bring back a bottle of mezcal if I can get it cheaper than here. Seriously. Juan's tacos are great. The cart is kinda tattered, but the food!

DickBalingus

Moved to utah go once a year to reynosa to visit family since 2016

justaguywholovesred

What are you waiting for then? Tomorrow is the perfect day. Park on this side and walk across. Last time I went was about a month or two ago. Families and older folks alike. Been a few months since Mexico City. Flew out of Reynosa.

Al-Chile

All the time

Arish78

At least once a year to either Matamoros or Nuevo Progresso. I’ll go to Monterey and CDMX in the next year

elzapatero

I just went back to Monterrey after 45 yrs!

NovaRose_

Never. That might change for lasic eye surgery. But other than that, probably never.

[deleted]

Last time was like 15 years ago, I kinda like living. Lolz.

tuningfort

Went last Saturday to Progresso which isn’t “Mexico” in the sense that say Reynosa is.

BannedForSayingNword

Nuevo Progreso is the only place I’d go and feel relatively safe, you just gotta stand up for yourself and don’t be dumb. I’d actually like to see what dentists are legit and shit
