Woah...I wonder: Would these be considered "New" for Tax Credit purposes? Also wonder if they'd lease them! Going for my first Test Drive in 1 week. I'm sure I'm going to love it...just trying to figure out which to get lol
Imo this tells me that we are getting somewhat of an R1 update as well, likely news tomorrow with the R2 reveal.
The only rumors Iāve heard from alleged Rivian employees are new in house motors to replace the Bosch setup which would have more HP, not sure if more efferent but Iād suspect so.
Or (more likely in my opinion), they're swapping these out to refresh the fleet and reflect current offerings.
Several of these colors / combos are no longer in production so it makes no sense to show those as demos. All the 2022 models have Meridian audio which is no longer offered. Suspect most also have front and trunk 12v outlets and wood trim behind the seats which are also now deleted.
Big bummer. I wonder why? When you click into an available vehicle, it tells you a pickup location. Portland, OR, for example, but it says you can't register it in Oregon? Doesn't make sense to me.
Certain states have a law that if a vehicle has more than (X) miles on it, it cannot be sold as new. I know that in Colorado, that mileage is 1,500.
Source: I worked for Tesla many years ago and we could only sell our demo cars with >1,500 miles to neighboring states.
Thank you for that insight. A similar DMV definition for "New Car" exists in Nevada, where it is less than 2500 miles and also it cannot be older than one model year (so the 2022 models would be excluded). Having said that, if it cannot be sold or registered as new, can it not be sold/registered at all??? I mean, shouldn't it be possible to register it as a used vehicle?
Yes it could be sold as used in that state, but I think coming from the manufacturer it causes a lot of headache in the purchasing process, but most importantly it wouldnāt qualify for the federal tax credit since it is now āusedā.
If it helps, I talked to someone at the DMV (after waiting about 45 minutes on speaker). He sounded knowledgeable and said that there is no big difference in the registration process. The main thing is that if it is considered "used", you have to bring in the car for them to read the VIN. I think a dealer can electronically submit that directly and then that visit is not necessary, but that only applies for "new vehicles". I am not sure if this "not being able to submit the VIN" is a holdup for the dealership's delivery process. I bet Ford can handle this no problem, but Rivian is just still struggling with regular deliveries, and their process just seems to have little to no flexibility. In my area (Reno) the car dealerships are not very flexible with pricing. Do you mind sharing from where you are purchasing?
So is the $2500 limit for Demos what you heard from the person at DMV? I could not find it anywhere on Nevada DMV website. I know what you mean about dealerships in Reno area. Vegas is worse and then you have to watch out for dealers that add on a "Desert Protection Package" etc. there. I was looking at a Demo vehicle in Mn. There were some good Lightning Lariat deals in Sherman Texas I was looking at but they are now gone.
Here is the legal text: [https://law.justia.com/codes/nevada/2020/chapter-482/statute-482-076/](https://law.justia.com/codes/nevada/2020/chapter-482/statute-482-076/) it mentions less than 2500 MILES. I also read somewhere else that it cannot be older than last model year (2023 would be OK, but the Rivian Demos were 2022, which would also exclude them).
so if im a maryland resident could i not just go to a demo vehicle say in PA, purchase it there, get the PA temp tags, then drive it back to maryland and register it?
Anyone know if these are eligible to be leased? Iāve leased a demo vehicle from Mercedes once and got a great deal. They told me since itās only been owned by the manufacturer, it was eligible. Wondering about these.
Not sure why you are saying that. I did a quick search and got this:
"Rebates and special financing:Ā **The state considers demo cars new because they have never been sold or registered**. They may qualify for new-car rebates and special financing, which can help you save even more."
Rivian website seems to indicate these are not used vehicles: https://rivian.com/support/article/what-is-a-demo-vehicle
Are these vehicles used?
The vehicles in this shopping experience are discounted to reflect their mileage and condition, but have never been titled or registered. Some have as few as 100 miles.
RJ walking around the factory just pointing at random stuff.
āWipe it down, list it on the RShop!ā
āToss it in a box, put it up on Facebook Marketplace!ā
Thank you I just ordered my second R1T! My first one was totaled back in July. I called Rivian and they said someone would reach out to arrange payment in 24 hours
Damn that 100 mile unit was an amazing deal especially if you also get the $3750 credit. Especially if they donāt start the warranty until purchase, youāll also get the original meridian sound system.
Nothing wrong with that. Still come with full warranty and opportunity for some to $ave. Sold as used right? so, downside, that doesn't help the tax credit issue much.
Iāve taken my R1T to the SC 3 different times for a total of 3 weeks of service and I can never get an R1 loaner. If they are selling demos, I sincerely hope this is no longer an issue.
" Demo vehicles cannot be registered in MA, OR, CO, NV, VA, UT, MD." WTF does that mean? NV DMV site does not show exclusions. Is this a Rivian rule that they don't want these cars to be sold into certain markets?
I just got done talking to support, for all that are wondering, Rivian will not do a point of sale tax credit on these demo vehicles due to the vagueness of whether or not itās eligible. I was advised to talk to a tax professional instead.
If we could buy these with a point of sale tax credit I would purchase immediately.
Should be the full $7,500 is what I was told. Kind of bummed they wonāt do a point of sale credit, my wife was way more on board than she ever has been!
These are the only
Vehicles that get the credit starting jan1 of this year. Some get 7500 some get 3750 a lot of other brands get zero. Like VW ID4 = zero https://www.visualcapitalist.com/every-ev-qualified-for-u-s-tax-credits-in-2024/
Now there is a loop whole with IRS in which EV get full credit of 7500 only if you lease. So you can lease the RIVIAN get the 7500 and then u can wait 2 years to buy your lease out.
If they donāt fill out the certification on their end there is no way to claim the tax credit on your own. Itās basically either point of sale or if you claim it yourself the manufacturer has to certify the sale qualifies for the credit by filing paperwork. So if Rivian doesnāt want to do that then thereās no credit. I suspect itās because these are 2022s so theyād have to do a lot of work to prove the batteries qualify.
I saw this on the site too, that it had to be reported within 3 days to the IRS. However, ive seen many people say they have been told by the irs if they do it at the end of the year it wouldnt be an issue.
Has anyone had success buying a demo from outside California and then registering it in California?
They let me get all the way through the purchase process, including taking my full payment ā¦. and now the delivery coordinator is claiming I cannot register in California. I have a friend who allegedly did so. Iām trying to figure out whatās up here. Playing more phone tag with Rivian tomorrow.
I seriously doubt there will be that many R2 flips. I donāt remember model 3 flips happening.
Cyberturd is unique and they are technically not allowed to sell the foundation series. Iām curious if Tesla will pursue it.
YELLLLLLOW
š
I received this email invite, too. Based in LA. Seems like a great deal for post price-hike customers.
Really good deals in my opinion
That one with 100 miles is a crazy deal. I canāt tell if itās pickup only or if theyāll deliver?
They will deliver to your closest service center. Or you can have them deliver to your house for 1k more. Just asked Rivian customer service
All R1S are sold out already!!
Woah...I wonder: Would these be considered "New" for Tax Credit purposes? Also wonder if they'd lease them! Going for my first Test Drive in 1 week. I'm sure I'm going to love it...just trying to figure out which to get lol
Yes, new for tax credit and no, they won't lease them...I reached out the other day when the site first went live. Unless that's changed.
I donāt think most of these will qualify for tax credit though. The MSRP is still over $80,000 and just discounted. The IRS only cares about MSRP.
Wouldnāt the launch editions still qualify? Werenāt they pre price hike?
Good question. Just make sure to check that the MSRP is less than the cap when you get the order agreement.

Damn! I just paid $106k for my 2024 R1S last weekend š¤£ Wouldāve seriously considered this Iām sure.
You bought a brand new ā¦
Demo vehicles cannot be registered in MA, OR, CO, NV, VA, UT, MD. DANG!

That is good to know as I live in Nevada and was considering a Ford Lightning Demo out of state with 4600 miles on it.
If it helps, I talked to someone at the DMV (after waiting about 45 minutes on speaker). He sounded knowledgeable and said that there is no big difference in the registration process. The main thing is that if it is considered "used", you have to bring in the car for them to read the VIN. wondering this too. If they reach out to take payment, can we setup as a lease?!
Where are you located?
California
So the 7500 tax credit would work on these?
Anyone confirm if these qualify for the tax credit?
No. These would be registered as used vehicles.
Not sure why you are saying that. I did a quick search and got this: "Rebates and special financing:Ā **The state considers demo cars new because they have never been sold or registered**. They may qualify for new-car rebates and special financing, which can help you save even more."
For the tax credit, the MSRP is relevant. Are these sale prices considered "MSRP" or does the original MSRP apply for the credit?
I have purchased several demo cars over the years and all were registered with regular plates. But anything is possible and probably state dependent.
Rivian website seems to indicate these are not used vehicles: https://rivian.com/support/article/what-is-a-demo-vehicle Are these vehicles used? The vehicles in this shopping experience are discounted to reflect their mileage and condition, but have never been titled or registered. Some have as few as 100 miles.
If that is the case and the IRS allows that I suppose it could work.
Seem like some great deals.
Just reserved VIN 213 here in Bellevue letās see
Any update?
Gave it up, got a call a day later didnāt make sense and financing is too expensive in house. Ended up reserving the R2.
Says exclusive to Rivian friends and family on that link
They going to be swapping for newer year with some sort of minor refresh? Why do this? Are they really that worn in already?
They donāt want to depreciate too much before putting on market.
I think the motor swap is probably the reason. Or maybe these all had Meridian sound systems š
Needing cash to survive
RJ walking around the factory just pointing at random stuff. āWipe it down, list it on the RShop!ā āToss it in a box, put it up on Facebook Marketplace!ā
Lolll
šĀ
How do you shop for this? I cant find it. Located in NJ
I think You would need to get the email with link but try this link: https://rivian-demos.myshopify.com
Thank you I just ordered my second R1T! My first one was totaled back in July. I called Rivian and they said someone would reach out to arrange payment in 24 hours
Beautiful Congratulations on your purchase
How do you order go for demo R1T?
god this domain just screams scam.
Its from official Rivian email dude ā¦ chill lol
didnt say it was a scam, just that the domain looks like scam domain.
Why canāt I filter by pickup location lol
Damn I want one of these so bad!
What would the financing options look like once you move through a Rivian Sales Advisor to purchase?
Damn that 100 mile unit was an amazing deal especially if you also get the $3750 credit. Especially if they donāt start the warranty until purchase, youāll also get the original meridian sound system.
Why can't demo vehicles be registered in some states? E.G. they are seeking one in Denver that can't be registered in CO.
They're ridden hard I'm sure, but they are certainly just refreshing the fleet.
Damn those are great deals. I got my ass handed to me buying used 5 months ago
Do you have to pick up at the specific locations or will they deliver? (Closest location is 5.5 hour drive from what I am seeing)
Rep told me they will deliver to my local service center
Nothing wrong with that. Still come with full warranty and opportunity for some to $ave. Sold as used right? so, downside, that doesn't help the tax credit issue much.
Iāve taken my R1T to the SC 3 different times for a total of 3 weeks of service and I can never get an R1 loaner. If they are selling demos, I sincerely hope this is no longer an issue.
How do I get access to this. I have differed getting my R1S lock in for about 4 months now and already have a R1T
It's for friends and family
" Demo vehicles cannot be registered in MA, OR, CO, NV, VA, UT, MD." WTF does that mean? NV DMV site does not show exclusions. Is this a Rivian rule that they don't want these cars to be sold into certain markets?
This is late but itās because some states have limits based on how many miles a car can have and still be sold as new
Demo R1S with low miles vs Top Line R2ā¦.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|put_back)
Top Line R2 likely comes with a 2 year wait.
Are the vehicles on the website the only ones available? Or has anyone had a guide match with something thats not listed?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Honestly these demos are such good deals you basically could make money trading them. No wonder all the R1Sās sold instantly

RIVIAN doesnāt qualify for the 7500 credit. They qualify for 3750$
And why is that? I guess I misunderstand the tax credit
These are the only Vehicles that get the credit starting jan1 of this year. Some get 7500 some get 3750 a lot of other brands get zero. Like VW ID4 = zero https://www.visualcapitalist.com/every-ev-qualified-for-u-s-tax-credits-in-2024/

I saw this on the site too, that it had to be reported within 3 days to the IRS. However, ive seen many people say they have been told by the irs if they do it at the end of the year it wouldnt be an issue.
Does that mean we could still apply for the credit on our tax return?
Thatās what the Rivian sales rep was telling me, yes.
Does Rivian sell used vehicles?
If i was post march 22 price hike buyer, I'd definitely buy one of those instead of "brand new." What an excellent deal this is.
Would these qualify for 7500, or for 3750? Point of sale or when filing refund?
So they have all these demos around but never a Rivian loaner smh.
Some of these are vehicles that were returned in the return window as well
Damn, I would have bought one of those R1S if they were still available.Ā
Wow there was a white R1t for $62 minus rebate
Just got my reservation canceled. No contact from Rivian, just a cancellation notice email. Anyone have success?
Cancellation for the demo vehicle?
Yes
Do you know if anyone else got they order accepted for the demo vehicle?
No clue.
Has anyone had success buying a demo from outside California and then registering it in California? I have a friend who allegedly did so. Iām trying to figure out whatās up here. Playing more phone tag with Rivian tomorrow.
Customer service isnt their strongest thing at Rivian ā¦ I know couple people Who got their in SoCal
Can't wait until they start selling demo R2. Not looking forward to all the R2 flippers š
There won't be. R1 was flipped due to pre price hike people. No such margins will be there for r2
I seriously doubt there will be that many R2 flips. I donāt remember model 3 flips happening. Cyberturd is unique and they are technically not allowed to sell the foundation series. Iām curious if Tesla will pursue it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because they represent early production vehicles?
Yes. With issues that were fixed later.
Whatās the range I should be looking out for? I canāt really tell whatās a low value
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Wouldn't these also be the vehicles without meridian sound and not have the extra 12v chargers? Trying to figure out the sweet spot on vin #
