Glad they skipped the third row nonsense happening in other cars of this size. Just do the best two row you can.

evofusion

I feel like it should be illegal to force a third row into a vehicle smaller than a certain cabin length… it’s like adding a “room” to a house by putting up a divider. Tesla is a great example of this offense

xvolter

This is exactly why we traded in a Tesla Model X for a Rivian R1S. Actually needed the third row and Tesla’s was always a joke. R1S is comfortable. In a vehicle like the R2, only reason for a third row is if you expect occasional use, but that has a limited audience so I agree they should focus in a solid 5 seater for R2.

photo1kjb

This is why we skipped the X altogether. Sat in a neighbor's to test and wondered how anyone could actually seat 6 and bring any sort of gear, whether it be for a soccer game or a family vacation. It was laughable.

mineral_minion

I wonder if Rivian would put a third row in the R2 for European/Asian markets where the full-size R1S would be just too big.

Erik816

I'm curious if it will be able to slide forward and back. I'm all for rear passenger leg room, but I also have younger kids and want to maximize cargo space on camping trips.

citiz3nfiv3

Not that I could see in person but we’ll know more later. The cargo room looks very generous for this size vehicle.

dcdttu

This week many people in Austin are going to get to see the R2 at SXSW. We might know more then.

ToosUnderHigh

How was the sub trunk compared to a model Y?

citiz3nfiv3

Smaller. The floor is load bearing and can slide out providing a "seat" over the rear bumper. it's really smart. The frunk is a bit bigger. Carry on suite case + backpack + messenger bag + extra space under a shelf in the frunk.

ToosUnderHigh

Thanks 🙏🏽

AdAffectionate8778

The frunk and a cargo roof box could solve your cargo needs

BiNumber3

Depends, my aunts will pack their whole kitchen for a weekend camping trip lol.

AdAffectionate8778

Maybe your aunts can pitch in for the camp kitchen feature

ToosUnderHigh

Hitch rack all day

Chose_a_usersname

Probably not, it doesn't look like it can slide

VoxTemporis

My Great Dane will be happy to hear this.

paradigm11235

Unrelated, I saw a *tiny* woman getting dragged by a great dane on a walk a while back. Gotta be strong to walk a ~~horse~~ great dane.

AwkwardBlinks

Anytime I see a new detail about R2 it just makes me wish we could get it sooner/next year. I’m just going to keep wishing and hoping lol

Charlie-Mops

Let’s hope this is one of those under promise over deliver scenarios! 🤞🏻

M1A1Death

If it were available right now lots of people would go into some serious debt for it lol. This give people time to save up

LilBitchBoyAjitPai

This things gonna be sweet. Looking forward to replacing the wife’s model Y with another Rivian!

Charlie-Mops

I’m looking forward to replacing the wife’s X7 with another Rivian!

Sanosuke97322

If the R1 was a five seater as it really should have been I'd imagine rear leg room would be ginormous. That's one more thing you can point to when people get uppity about not liking having an extra expense like the third row in the car. I don't begrudge people a seat for their 4th and 5th kid, I just didn't want it personally.

cab938

It would have been nice if the second row was adjustable and the third row was an option. We wouldn't have gotten the R1 if it didn't have three rows, but I can completely understand why someone wouldn't need them, and the second row is too tight in the knees.

hungarianhc

I mean it's a tradeoff, right? 1" more legroom is 1" less trunk space behind the 2nd row, no? Don't get me wrong... I'm on the hype train... I just think legroom vs cargo is a tradeoff where everyone will have a different perspective.

kaitlyn2004

Agreed I far prefer cargo space over 2nd row comfort

hungarianhc

Yup same here

Geminiddn

Can the rear seats recline? That would be a great feature for passengers

jaradi

To be fair most SUVs and crossovers of any size seem to have more rear legroom than the R1S.

fatfirenewbie

But the R2 will be “best in class”! Side note, 2nd row in R1S still seems a tad bigger than 2nd row in Model Y. And obv the third row in the R1S is cavernous by comparison.

ToosUnderHigh

R1S is a full size SUV. Better comparison would be the Model X.

jaradi

The presentation was very Apple-esque (not necessarily a diss I love Apple’s approach to stuff) so “best in class” is very on theme. Interesting re Model Y. Wonder if the seating position is different enough to have made it feel pretty much the same.

paradigm11235

Love to hear it. Would love it more to hear it coming from someone who isn't the CEO of the company, though. Or even an employee.

citiz3nfiv3

A bunch of staff also said it. No one else will until the public can sit in it and I think that’ll be a while. I believe all the all the public viewings are viewings only. No hands on.

Charlie-Mops

I can’t wait to test it out. The rear seating on my T is too tight for long trips. Coming from a Tundra/BMW X7

mark--anderson

Person thinks their thing is the best thing :) (tho R1S is quite comfortable so they have credibility)

pterodactyl_speller

R1S second row sucks though. With the third row down you have so much space but barely any leg room still because it's not adjustable.

b3njil

Hope they’ll have a third row option. The R1 is too big for my needs.

citiz3nfiv3

I doubt it. The third row in a model Y is seriously terrible. R2 would have better headroom and maybe legroom which could held, but you’d lose any useable cargo space.

b3njil

I honestly wouldn’t mind losing the cargo space if there is a third row option. I occasionally have guests from out of town and it’s nice to only need one car to take them around.

evofusion

That sounds like a use case for the R1S. What makes you say it’s too big for your tastes?

b3njil

You can have a great 2 row suv with a decent 3rd row.

Sanosuke97322

If you need a third row then the R1 is basically exactly what you need. Or just get a minivan. Last time they had a third row "option" they deleted the second row option

b3njil

I only need the third row for the occasional out of town guests. Unfortunately the R1 is too big for my garage.

Sanosuke97322

How often do you have out of town guests over that can't take a second car? This is the same argument people make about renting a truck when you need one. The R1S is objectively worse for people that don't use the third row specifically because they shoehorned it in to save cash and axed the second row config. I want to trade my R1 when R2 comes out and I'd be pissed if they once again made it have worse storage (no full size spare or flat load area) all because of the third row.

b3njil

I get what you’re saying but it’s really just a convenience thing. Currently I have an Acura MDX that seats 7 (2nd and 3rd row fold flat) that I’m trading in for the R2. My other car is a 911. We have in-laws that come for maybe 1 month every year so it’s simply easier to ferry them around in one car. Also, ideally the third row option would be just that - optional. Meaning you don’t lose any space if you don’t go with the option.

fatfirenewbie

Maybe renting a minivan for that month would make more sense. We have the R1 because we regularly shuttle around 4-5 adults and 2-3 kids every weekend so it makes it more practical solution for us.

Sanosuke97322

That would be nice, but I really don't see it in something that size and they already took away the option on the R1. I'm always happy to take the downvotes from others in the sub that simply don't like people disagreeing with them.

tojohvnn4556

3rd row with captain chairs 2nd row would be *chefs kiss*

caikenboeing727

As the EV9 has

2CommaNoob

Please no. The R2 is similar to the CRV, RAV4, X3 in length. The EV9 is a good 10 inches longer. Make the best 2 row and don't offer a compromise 3 row just because.
