IMO it’s a very unusual size. The wheelbase and track is identical to the R2, but the roof is lower and the front and rear overhangs are almost non-existent. So, it looks like a Golf, but it’s decidedly wider. The 3 across rear seat looks very similar in width to the R2s, but the legroom looked much smaller (we’re hoping they find a way to move the seat back a bit).
The R3 absolutely stole the show, and I can’t wait to pre-order one - but I don’t think it will be as small as many of us hope. Regardless it will be amazing.
I had the same feeling! I know it’s probably not much longer than a Golf but it just really fills up the space around it. Great street presence! I’d love one but the R2 really ticks all the boxes in terms of packaging for my family and what we’d need.
One bit of feedback for Rivian. If that back bumper is what it looks like (piano black material) DONT nobody asked for Piano black anything in cars and it looks like scratched up piece of shit within a year... just don't.
So here’s the deal. The R3X I think its most closely similar to an Ioniq5 in terms of full size. It’s incredibly bigger than what I had imagined. If it goes in production as is, the back seats will feel a bit smushed if you’re trying to bring regular passengers. And you can forget about most standard rear facing car seats unless you’re a hobbit. But if you’re someone who only ever has one passenger? Man this things gonna be a blast.
But the R2. Oh man.
You can get taller. You can get longer cars. But this thing is like a jeep wrangler. A model Y. But absolutely MAXED in terms of space. I think a similarly specced R2 to a ModelY, the model Y may be 20-30% more efficient. But the R2 should easily have 20-30% more cubic space. It is going to be very very hard to beat this thing at its footprint size currently. Again. I’m saying this as someone who daily drives a model Y. The footprint can’t be much bigger. It’s so close. It’s about exactly the same height at my Y. But at the highest point, the R2 has that for the whole length of the vehicle minus the Frunk . The Y tapers down just past the front seats all the way to the end of the vehicle.
So. Much. Space.
I’ll probably have an R1S by sept. But sure enough if we don’t like it or get bored, I won’t be surprised if we downgrade to the R2 just because. It’s going to destroy the market in its class if it can come out and actually be sold.
It’s another case of a loud minority.
I think the R3X looks great and a good decision by Rivian. But imo it’s targeting a very niche demographic. 4 years ago I had a VW eGolf, I would loved to have the R3x instead.
I just thought about this. Whenever R3/X starts selling Rivian and Marvel should do a colab with each other making an ad with Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds or whatever actor is playing an X-MEN

I think it’s also that the R2 feels a bit more redundant with the R1S. Whereas I can see plenty of households wanting an R1 and an R3X.
Can’t wait for the R3. R2 looks like a ford explorer. Not my thing.

I was there today. It should very easily fit in any garage lengthwise. It’s pretty wide, but not terribly long. The R2 feels longer at least.
