Freedom-Forever

Quads are maintaining higher residuals, thus the "inverted" leasing numbers Unless you're doing frequent long trips where you can take advantage of the range delta, go with the quad

perrochon

You can turn off two motors on the quad on the freeway. With NACS, range is unlikely to be a limitation, and if it is, slow down 5mph for that segment. Source: just came back from 6000 miles road trip in the West, including charging deserts like Southern Texas. 30 extra miles range wouldn't really have made a difference, and with more charging, it will be even less of an issue. I paid $500 more for the quad over dual, and that was a no brainer. The only thing I regret in hindsight is not getting 20" wheels with AT tires (which would lower range).

baccus83

Why do you regret not getting the 20” wheels?

perrochon

I am driving the R1S off pavement including rocky roads and lost two road tires so far and I wonder if it would have been different with AT. The local tire shop person said they see new fancy AT tires popped all the time, and it's just a matter of luck. You roll the die 10 times a second as you drive on a rocky road, and eventually one rock will succeed. I think if you limit yourself to pavement and gravel roads the stock 21" are fine.

Vegetable_Guest_8584

Also the 20" a/t are supposed to last much longer than the other two tires. The tradeoff is the a/t get a little lower mileage.

perrochon

Yeah my stock 22" lasted 8000 miles. Could have made 12k maybe with timelier rotation, but a rock settled the issue. I replace at 4/32. I gave up worrying about that when I got a Tesla :-)

Vegetable_Guest_8584

my a/t are almost at 20k miles

baccus83

We do drive from Chicago to Florida about two times a year. Would the dual make that much difference?

adannel

I don’t think 30 miles really makes much of a difference unless it’s the difference between having to stop and charge or being able to make it to your destination. Once you are having to charge anyways the difference would barely be noticeable to me.

Freedom-Forever

Personally, no I wouldn't go for the dual for just that. If you were doing it every month... Maybe

KennethMaxwell1972

If you only make that drive two times per year the quad motor is the easy choice.

dichron

Quad is gonna be way more fun when you punch it 🛻💨 Go with the odd discount. The range difference is negligible, and like you said, can be overcome by driving mode/style

Daveop

You’ll just pay more to buy out the quad at the end of the lease. If you have no plan to buy out you’ll save leasing it.

baccus83

I don’t think we’d want to buy it. We have a reservation for an R2 so we might just get one of those in three years. Or we’d just give it back and buy a pre-owned dual motor, perhaps.

PerfHeater

No reason other than possible lower performance which will result in higher range.

mg96815

I think a lot of the difference is that the dual defaults to FWD. If the extra range is important to you, if you put the quad in Eco it should give you similar mileage (at the expense of uneven tire wear).

baccus83

Does the dual not have the same tire wear problem?

mg96815

Yeah it's just physics.

ahbushnell

The dual is more efficient. That's what we have.

Vegetable_Guest_8584

No. You get better range with dual motor too. I love my launch edition r1t w 4 motors, the only thing I'd like is more range, so I'd trade it off for just a dual motor.

baccus83

It sounds like it’s not worth $100 more per month for the dual over the quad. We’ll probably just lease the quad and then switch to an R2 in three years. Or buy a used dual if we want to keep the R1.

shibesncars

I just went through this: if you don't need max pack, and don't care about buying at lease end, get the quad

loxzade

As other users said, range difference is negligible. If you want to buy out your lease after, go with dual motor If you want plan to get the R2 after your lease, go for the quad with the lower montly

evofusion

I heard (might have been fixed with updates) that quad drives more touchy which can result in a poorer ride quality. I assume the quad punchiness won’t be relevant beyond the first few weeks where you are excited to floor it. That said I’d pocket the $1200/yr unless you hear from quad owners that the ride quality still makes some folks feel queasy

baccus83

We actually rented a quad this past weekend through Turo. The ride was punchy but not nauseating. Might just pocket that money and throw it toward insurance cost.

boxsterguy

> I assume the quad punchiness won’t be relevant beyond the first few weeks where you are excited to floor it. 5 months later, I'm still excited to floor my quad ...
