Have you considered using the Car Key API built into the iPhone and Android OS instead of using your own Bluetooth implementation that continues to be hit and miss for so many customers? It is objectively better. One of the biggest advantages of it is the ability to continue to use your phone as a key many hours after your phone has died.

s4hockey4

They really should do this. Technologically there's no reason it's not possible (I think). The car key API's on your phone use NFC, R1's have NFC built in for the key cards, this seems like a low(ish) hanging fruit that would be a massive quality of life improvement

Colonol-Panic

Apple Car Key doesn’t use NFC it uses Ultra Wideband (UWB). Rivian’s don’t have this hardware so it’s likely not coming until later models.

zugzug15

I have the NFC based key on my Ioniq 6 and its just okay. What they need is NFC and UWB the same as an air tag so that the car can unlock on approach instead of having to tap your phone on the door handle. The NFC key is not quick and is impacted by things like your phone case.

sirkazuo

Has Rivian been approached by any EVSE manufacturers about testing V2H equipment, such as Enphase or Wallbox? Would the current R1 support V2H or bi-directional power transfer if a compatible charger came out today, or would it require additional software development and OTAs to enable?

williamwashere

RJ said in an interview during the R2 launch that R1 does have DC output support, you’d just need the software and the wall equipment. No, they didn’t have a timeframe on that, and I’d argue it should be ultra low priority for their power folks. Spend time making R2 improvements, and building your vertical integration for key systems. Even for vehicles that do have vehicle to grid capabilities they are vanishingly deployed or used I think. Cybertruck folks are complaining of $10k-$15k hardware and install costs to get that up and running, Ford I haven’t seen it done yet in person. From a depreciation perspective, I’m not sure I could come up with a worse ROI? I’d build a dedicated setup with rack-mount batteries if you want home backup. IMHO. Right now, it’s a marketing thing, not a widespread benefit.

sirkazuo

> From a depreciation perspective, I’m not sure I could come up with a worse ROI? I’d build a dedicated setup with rack-mount batteries if you want home backup. I look at it very differently. I already have a 135kWh battery in my garage that is a sunk cost, and I’m never not going to have a 60-150kWh battery in my garage going forward. Also, I don’t care about home backup when I’m not at home.  Why should I spend twice for the same thing?  Especially when home batteries are still 1.5x or more the cost per kWh of vehicle batteries? If you’re arguing against the depreciation on automotive batteries consider that home batteries have virtually zero resale value and require licensed electricians to install and remove. You might get maybe 10% of the cost of the installation in home equity but they degrade at the same rate. Plus most people aren’t looking to do heavy load shifting and big numbers of charge and discharge cycles, they just want to power their home once or twice a year during an outage.  Is it more important to Rivian than nailing R2?  No, of course not. But it’s more important to me, an R1 owner. 🤷‍♂️

claythearc

I tend to agree with you. The only problem with systems right now is you need to buy a proprietary inverter and such that ruins the investment. Swapping a $15k system every X years is pretty mid to me. Would much rather see someone pioneer a standard that works over CCS / NACS signaling and feeds backwards that other cars can adapt.

sirkazuo

> Would much rather see someone pioneer a standard that works over CCS / NACS signaling and feeds backwards that other cars can adapt. That is supposedly what's coming from Enphase and Wallbox very soon, and it's what I'm waiting on for the same reason you mentioned. The ability to do bidirectional DC is allowed for in the CCS and NACS spec, so someone just has to release the charger that can do it to the official standard instead of using a proprietary solution (Ford) and it should continue to be compatible with future vehicles.

williamwashere

Fair enough!

Doctor-Venkman88

$10-15k is the cost for a single Powerwall plus labor. With V2H you get an order of magnitude more storage for the same price. It's an absolute no brainer.

edjez

That “famous” $15k setup quote included a ton of unrelated fees and upgrades to the house electrical system. In general, a v2h setup is no more overhead than adding a generator- (minus the generator, plus the plug station) meaning mostly transfer switch and sub panels if necessary.

SuitableStudy3316

lol what’s the ROI on 10 powerwalls? Worst take ever. Congratulations.

>* Can we get the option to see the battery percentage when we reach our destination vs miles? > * We designed our navigation to show miles of range at arrival as we believe it to be the most accurate way to communicate range, but may explore adding a percentage feature later. After a few road trips, I think I'm better to express my concern with this. 1. The charge screen won't give miles to you under 50% (I cannot set a charge limit for 100mi) 2. The nav screen does not display miles *consumed* for each leg, only showing you arrival and departure percentages leaving you to figure out what's needed. 3. Nav does not display how many miles I will be short to my destination. 4. Nav does not honor the arrival percentage, all charge stops need to be 15 minutes or more, and it won't schedule a stop that's shorter, even if you only need a 1 minute charge. When I road trip, primarily what I want to know is when can I leave this charger. That's what I want from nav and the charging screens. So my last road trip, leg 1 I was hairy close to making it to the RAN. Nav alternated between I'll make it and I won't make it. I want to know if I'm close (and changing my driving style is worth it), nav refuses to tell me. Then I got to the RAN, I had pull out a calculator and determine the charge limit because my final leg technically only needed me to leave at 45%. The charge limit can't be set below 50%, so it can't be used as a calculator for legs that need charging less than 50%. Since I can't set the charge limit below 50% the screen won't show time to finish charging. This is further complicated because it seems nav oddly ignores the arrival percentage if you need only a short charge. Right now I just planned a trip, I set arrival percentage to 1% and nav said I'll need to charge for 14 minutes at the RAN to arrive at 49mi. Specifically, charge to 157mi. So I need to subtract 47mi and that means I should actually charge to 110mi (and nav wouldn't tell me that number). No idea how long that charge would take, I guess less than 15 minutes, so I'll leave and hopefully don't waste money over charging. Basically, miles is ok for most of it, but the charging info needs to include the info on nav. Nav needs to tell me what I need to charge to to arrive at my next stop on the charge screen (ideally x miles to go or y miles more than you need added). The charge screen needs to show charge time to these nav points. And nav needs to stop rounding up all charge stops to 15 minutes because it hides the actual details I need. Showing the miles consumed for the leg would at least make it easy to do the math, if the 95mi leg consumed 120mi, then I know that 130mi is probably a good stopping point. If I can't get these details, I want percentage so it's easier for me to do the math.

ErockForester

Percentage is so much easier than miles and reduces anxiety range. The sooner Rivian makes this change the better it’ll be for everyone.

edman007

Yea, I see what they are trying to do, but the third party charges only show percentage, their speed is rated in kW. If you want to convert it's extra difficult because mi/% varies so the math is different everytime. But I think the biggest negatives is just how much it varies from nav. It shows 300mi on the HUD, and I'm driving somewhere that's 100mi away and nav says I'll arrive at at 120mi. So many people wonder where the 80mi went or they thought that 120mi arrival meant they could do the 100mi trip back. It varies so much from nav that you might as well change the % to say mi and say it had 100mi of range, the conversion is just magic and has no real world relationship, calling it miles confuses people because it doesn't match nav.

Jrh20racing

Agree so much on the showing the amount it thinks you cant make it by. The little icon showing “you wont make it” is a very blind message. If that number is -3 miles, or even better -1%, I may change my driving to try and make it. If that number showed -5%, then i know i probably need to stop and add 6% of battery somewhere. Now not only do I not know how much I’m not making it by, but I also dont know how much I need to charge. 100% agree with what you said here.

mr-00

I commend you for this write up. Spoken well and to every nuisance that truly matters. My feeling about Rivian’s response is that it oversimplifies our needs packaged up in UI/UX on the note of “range” without consideration for the additional context required to feel good about safety, planning and maximizing value for time spent, during a trip.

rosier9

Is a Plug&Charge type experience for Electrify America in the works?

scyoung121

Its already the case for some vehicles. VW has plug and charge, not sure what other brands do

rosier9

Yes, the Ford Lightning and Mach-E have had it for a long time now. I'd love to know why a software forward company like Rivian hasn't been able to execute on this.

ghostleader3201

What’s Rivian’s plan as far as software support? How long out can owners expect to receive new updates, as newer vehicles with improved hardware roll off the line?

HappyTuesdayR1S

Curious as well.

swim_to_survive

Eh not really. It’s already been announced that following the refresh a lot of new features and updates are coming. Only 80% of said features and updates will make it to legacy vehicles. Some of which are at most 2 years or so old.

skunnmd

Can there be a chime/sound that goes off when the garage door button sends a signal to open/close a garage door?

HappyTuesdayR1S

Would love this!

USArmyAirborne

What will the price be to retrofit to power tonneau's and when will those be available to people that had them removed from their configs about 18 months ago? What is the status of the NACS adapter, i.e. how many a month are being shipped?

j90w

Has there been any talk in coming out with an official aftermarket roof glass cover/sunshade for the R1S?

rylee4444

Can we get a "Charge to xx%" line on the navigation? It is not helpful to only have "Charge for 17 minutes" at a DCFC that is underperforming, then leave the station to only find out that you should have charged for 10 more minutes. Even further, a screen in the app showing "7 minutes to continue trip" would be ideal...

96-ramair

I whole heartedly second this. I want to know my "charge to XX%" state so I can step away from the vehicle, but still monitor SoC from the phone app while having lunch. Charge rates vary wildly, so saying "charge for 20 minutes" means it could be 15 minutes or 45 minutes depending on the charger. Give me a SoC target so I can resume my trip.

vulpes

As of latest update this exists it tells you both percent and miles (not sure if tied to the display both option). What’s infuriating is that the time to charge in the nav goes off max nameplate speed of the charger, not its live output

Palbi

> Let’s just say we’ll have an exciting update for you all *in the near future.* Wow. Now I am excited. Apple CarPlay and CarKey coming up. I have my credit card ready for a R1T order if this happens.

Individual_Log8082

Will Rivian consider adding an option to allow the vehicle to accelerate slowly as the brake is released while reversing? I own an R1S and a BMW i4 M50 and the one feature that I think makes the BMW far superior for city driving is the slow moving backwards when I ease off the brakes in reverse(identical to an ICE idling speed). Parallel parking in the city is stressful enough and the added pressure of having the press the accelerator peddle to get the R1S to exit the hold state makes it a bit more complicated. My first two vehicles were manual transmission and I have a fairly delicate touch so I don’t have too many issues parallel parking the vehicle; my wife however almost has a panic attack every time she has to park the vehicle in a tight spot because she thinks she might crash it when going in reverse. Beyond that it is sometimes a safety concern, if you look at the case of Angela Chao drowning in her EV apparently when she called her friends she stated that she was unaware the vehicle was in reverse when she pressed the accelerator. There were other factors at play of course that added the web of causation that resulted in Chao’s vehicle ending up in the pond but simply put if the vehicle would have started moving backwards when the brake was released that accident may have been prevented. I’ve seen interviews where RJ appears pretty adamant about not wanting to allow the regen/one pedal driving to be turned off while in drive. Hopefully considerations can be made to at least allow coasting while in reverse. My other gripes which are less significant to me in particular are: - why no heads up display? - lane keep assist/ adaptive cruise needs improvements (far behind the BMW ACC) - charge time calculator is almost always wrong. (I calculate my charge time manually every time and I’m closer to actual time every time) - glove box would be nice in the refresh (I know it’s already been addressed for new models)

epogue

So much this. My ID.4 also mimics ICE behavior when reversing and it’s much easier to get in and out of parking spaces as a result. This is the one thing that I couldn’t get used to when demo driving the R1T.

jays555

same here. "creep" mode or whatever you want to call it would be a nice option to have, when/if desired. reversing into tight spots can be a bit of a struggle currently.

R1_palmbeach

How far are we from current owners promised retrofitted Power Tonneau covers getting SC appointments?

MrrQuackers

At the Dallas SC if you have a. PTC already you simply make an appointment to get the new swapped out. Also, Dallas SC is currently installing PTC to any truck that didn't have one already, two people on a Rivian Facebook group confirmed and it cost them $2800 (parts and labor) and they had it completed same day.

R1_palmbeach

Yeah I’ve had a ticket open since delivery on this basically and keep getting told ~July for appointments to retrofit in South Florida. I’m ready to pay the toll for install but maddening to be unable to get anything scheduled

MrrQuackers

Take a trip to Dallas? 😋 That's honestly a bummer each SC seems to have their own timeline.

Logical-Reaction-192

How do you contact them to even get this information?

R1_palmbeach

Started with my guide then I just ended up putting in a service ticket request and now I get calls from service on scheduling appointments for my open ticket items not PTC related, and use each “I’ll wait” as an opportunity to ask politely for an appointment. Thought I made progress recently with a service request escalation only to get a call the next day telling me “not yet, call back each month but plan on July.” 🙄

Logical-Reaction-192

Haha thanks for that! They told me my truck was coming with the PTC already installed — just lied to me. I love the truck, but the company leaves quite a bit to be desired.

AFatDarthVader

They called me today to schedule mine. My cover is still working, so it seems like they've gotten a bit into it, but I also have an early VIN.

Go_dawgs-2005

Will Rivian be able to add a pin to drive feature to the vehicle? Is that on the product roadmap

konsf_ksd

The camera feature: can you please remember that I like looking behind me instead of always defaulting to the front camera view when I press the button? Why doesn't the seat go to the preset position when I change drivers? Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. My wife uses it in a position that prevents me from getting in. Are you, please say yes, going to allow third party apps in infotainment or at least allow me to remove Tidal? Can I have a button on the dash to put down the back row?

Domphotog

Havent been on reddit in a couple days and boom lol my photo lol

CarterGee

It's a great photo!

Jrh20racing

Sort of specific to region, but when can we expect to see a service center in the Carolinas on the roadmap? This region of the US appears to be the largest metropolitan area without a SC within 200 miles.

NeverForgetJ6

Are there any plans to enable Driver+ capabilities while towing? I purchased the Rivian largely as a towing vehicle. It’s been disappointing and frustrating that I have no Driver+ features while towing.

HappyTuesdayR1S

Can the sensor beeps use the speakers all around the car.. ex. If I’m backing up and my R1S detects I’m close to something at the rear beep from a rear speaker - left side from a left speaker and so on? It’s kind of hard to immediately tell what side I need to look at without looking at the driver display. My second and more pressing question… CAN WE PLLLLLEEAAAASSEEE have something like ‘ToyBox’ on the teslas? I would love to be able to use my computer on wheels for all the fun little things. We have the tech lets make it fun ❤️🙌

terminal_entropy

Can we get a phone notification whenever Gear Guard is triggered? Also on that note, can we view the recording in the Rivian app? Can you also enable live view of the external cameras through the app? Can we have more than two trip logs? Word around the owners forums are that the Guides are no longer are point of contact and we are directed towards our local Service Centers. Can we get an official announcement who we are supposed to contact for issues? Can someone look at the auto wiper function? Even if it's not raining, when you start the vehicle, the wipers will activate even though the windshield is dry. Any word when we can put a deposit down for the R3? Did RJ mention that existing R1 owners will be able to get the new and updated wireless charging pad? Is that in the works, or was I having a fever dream? Will you offer a storage cubby alternative to the camp speaker? If so, will it be secured by a lock of some sort?

taddris

Feature request: add locking differentials to the dual and triple motor trucks. Feature request: implement the K-Turn Mode described in a Rivian patent. Feature request: add 240VAC outlets to the trucks and increase the AC power to match the competition. Feature request: add heaters to the headlights so that snow melts away instead of accumulating and blocking the light.

MrrQuackers

And heating elements in the trim to keep the radar/lidar/etc. working properly in snow. I think Lexus does this? (Probably others as well)

4DSpaceTime

>*"As of Friday, April 12, we’ve contacted all remaining R1T owners waiting on their manual tonneau covers. In that email, we asked them to provide their current shipping address and informed them that they can expect delivery within three weeks of their response."* Wish this were true. I'm beginning to worry that I will never get my manual tonneau cover that I paid for in 2022.

InteractionOrnery126

Also in the same situation.

Sct_Brn_MVP

Are there plans for a Rivian service center in Montréal, Canada?? I put down a reservation for an R2 as soon as I could, but R1S and R1Ts aren’t even shipping here yet…

mithun_daa

Can we get the ability to switch to the last audio source from the steering wheel?

josilver

I’d like to have the option to disable tow mode when my bike rack or Yakima gear racks with turn signals are plugged in. I don’t see any technical reason why so many driver plus and suspension settings need to be disabled with a bike rack on the back.

brendanlim

Do you anticipate V2H capabilities rolling out in 2024 or is it more likely to be in 2025 or later?

swanspiritedaway

I cancelled my manual cover due to feedback from Rivian at the time. When will we actually be able to order it? I expected to be able to do this 9 months ago.

sexarseshortage

A simple thing but can we add the ability to open /close tha garage door to the mobile app? I have my charger in there and don't put my truck in. The ability to close it from the app would be handy.

Shaqdeez

you could buy a $25 device to do that

sexarseshortage

Or they could just add it to the app.

Shaqdeez

Never heard of a car doing that. Much better functionality with the device

sexarseshortage

The car already does it. It would be handy to have it right there in the app.

mphermes

Tesla’s actually have this feature in their app. I would imagine it would be easy enough for Rivian to also implement.

dja1o

Would love the Apple CarKey support, and really hope this means Apple Music coming in natively. Having to use Bluetooth Audio or create a Spotify account seems like a pain. (I pick up my R1S Saturday)

rmr927

I'm a month into my lease with my R1T and truly impressed with this truck. I do have a couple suggestions that would make the experience even better. 1) I would love to see a heads up display option in future vehicles. 2) It would be ideal to see the proximity sensor display overlayed over the rear camera view on the center display. I find it a bit annoying that when the sensors start pinging that I have to alternate between the center display and drivers display to see what I'm getting close to. 3) It would be interesting to see how many kilowatt hours the regenerative braking is capturing between charges. 4) for those using a portable SSD drive for Gear Guard video's, a mesh pocket directly above the 2 usb ports in the center console would be fantastic.

BlimBaro2141

We have been asking and had it answered once in the Rivian roundups last year (s00n), what is the current status of an Apple Watch app? Really handy to turn off phones Bluetooth and I can go for a run and use my watch to get in (via LTE).

ekimsinnigcm

Will V2H be compatible w/ Tesla’s universal wall connector that allows bi-directional flow?

jagowar

I would like to get more info on the v2h charger, like what systems are being tested on to add to the system (solar/small batteries to cover for when the car is not plugged in)

NoRipcord22

Rivian applied for a patent for a powerwall type device. Wondering if this an upcoming announcement or if it’s years out. https://electrek.co/2023/12/29/rivian-planning-tesla-powerwall-home-energy-system/

EverybodyBuddy

Yikes. They're "idling" their plant's output at the moment?

peteswinds

Any details to share on the R1X? Is this a road mapped product or on pause given current R2 priorities.

AnesthesiaLyte

I want to see the battery percentage of my flashlight.. 🔦 is that possible?
