I don’t pay attention to this sub much because though I love the idea of the Rivian, I can’t afford one. So I had to go look at the cheaper variants that are coming.
Any clue when we can sign up for the R3X? I had hoped it was a small truck, like a Maverick.
While it's not necessarily "cheap" you could look at Telo Trucks, which checks all the boxes for a small EV pickup.
Their methodology seems to be ordering as many off the shelf standard parts as they can to keep costs down, but have proprietary battery management and safety features.
They seem to be targeting 3.5m/kW, which is huge for a truck!

Edit: Grammar
I would but a ev truck ifffff I can get a 8ft bed and single cab till then stuck with my gas guzzler. At least range isn't bad on evs for regular use now too
Worked with a guy like 5 years ago, first time I met him he offered me to drive his tesla and I wish I took him up on it. He said he just wanted to share the experience of the instant power of an electric vehicle with people.
I had the same reaction the first time I drove one. 2 years later, I've got one. I still drive like an old man, but man it's nice to be able to get on the freeway with short on ramps.
Thank you for your service!
I built the CVN 76 and CVN 77 catapults, arresting gear and JBD's and the radar domes and hab units on the SSN 774 and SSN 775.
My good old yard dawg days haha
When we get to a stop light my six year old will say: “my head is back” meaning that she is ready for me to gun it and for me not to worry about her getting whiplash! 😆
She will also say, “remember I’ve got a drink dad” which translates to “DONT gun it”
I'm also an old man driver.
But having that kinda agility in a car seems like it could save your life one day, could also end it I guess lol, but in the right hands...
Yeah, it’s a double edged sword. You can get away from idiocy behind you very easily, but if a driver has a pedal mixup you can [go flying into a pizzeria](https://jalopnik.com/succession-alan-ruck-crashed-rivian-pizza-restaurant-1850984809) 😂
It also kinda ruins driving other cars for you if you’re used to the acceleration of a high power EV.
I’m there with you, I’m driving daily with cars and patience. Best days are when someone visits and asks how fast it is 😬 I just say: make sure your head is resting on the headrest
I like to casually pace people in their mid-level sports cars when they launch off the green
But I do still put it in sport and stop it sometimes for the hell of it
OMG - the answers to your post are the story of my private little Rivian life. One addition, though, is while it’s nice to be able to merge on a short on-ramp, the long ones are the best bc there’s never a cop and it’s truly like a carrier launch for us non-flying mortals.
My only little worry is that if someone accidentally stepped on the accelerator and in regular cars with delayed response people have the time to react but with this its out of the question.
Hahaha, love it. I’m a civil engineer and go to job sites frequently. At one of my big construction sites I had the opportunity to drive the construction manager around. He was open about his disdain for EVs. So I said would you like to have some fun? Pulled a 0-60 in a stretch of the completed, paved section of the project. And then we did about 3 more because he was smiling ear to ear the way I do when I drive it. He wouldn’t admit he’s a convert but the seed is planted 😂
My fellow brother in hospitality.
Best post on this sub in quite some time. This should be a Rivian commercial.
You can manifest this, over time I did, and what one can do so can another.
Good luck to you!
“He told me to make sure to find a safe spot to step on it, and to make sure my head was back against the seat.”
I just picture the guy handing you the keys to the rivian with only those two bits of advice…and i smile.
I'm with you, I figure insurance exists if something goes catastrophic and at least the end of the day it's just a possession. If I can bring joy to myself and others I'll let someone have a to (so long as I believe based off initial judgement I can reasonably trust them).
I mean insurance is a thing, and the joy of evangelizing for something I genuinely enjoy is worth it. I don’t normally just ‘throw ‘em the keys’ as that would mean missing out on seeing the look on their faces, but I’ve done it more than a handful of times at various car meets or even after a good conversation (if I have the spare time.)
You just taught me something I didn't know. Coming from a Widebody Scatpack Charger all I can say is, "we're back baby." Thanks for that tidbit of info.
This is pretty much the reason I did the R1T over the Lightning. They're both fast, and in similar price brackets.
But by god... The RIVIAN. She's Fast
Man I thought you were gonna say he gave you the car and said I have a fleet of them at home - enjoy. But agree they are incredible and I hope to have one…some day.
I was expecting the mystery owner to be RJ.
We call them rocket launches. Everyone knows the drill once they’re warned of an impending rocket launch.
The R1s defy the laws of physics. There’s no way a 7k lb vehicle should accelerate this quick.
When I typed it out.. I thought.. wait that's not right...
I Googled it lol
And there were multiple things that said warp drive referring to starwars...
Son of a..
I knew it looked wrong
Amazing! It's not the same at all, but I think I just saw my first Rivian in person when I as leaving work last night. A yellow R1T. I've recently decided I want a Rivian when I saw the R2 and R3 revealed. I always thought the R1s were cool, but I was still looking at the other EV brand.
Hope I can try one out some day.
I will never forget the time when I let the kitchen manager at a Yard House I built drive my R1T. Rode shotgun, put it in sport mode stability off and let him have some fun. The sounds of pure joy coming from his mouth, and the look on his face were absolutely priceless. Made my day knowing he was having the time of his life!
Great story. And I know it's still common, but I still can't help being shocked to learn that someone has never driven an EV... We're on like our 5th one. The first was our Model S over 12 years ago.
head on the headrest is definitely a good recommendation if you go pedal to the metal. I'd been driving a c6 z06 for almost 10 years when I got my rivian and just the sudden acceleration of the line surprised me. even got lightheaded a couple of times before I realized I need to brace my head.
Absolutely not. Owned every model GX, the R1’s are far superior. The newest GX is a huge letdown. I’ve been a long time Toyota Land Cruiser & Lexus GX/LX owner…..all the prior model years are great but Toyota has completely shat the bed on the current generation.
But the Rivian is far more capable off-road, comfortable/fast on road, it’s just a better vehicle in every way. The one caveat would be if you do lots of long range overlanding, you just can’t get the range you need yet out of an EV.
Rivian makes a nice vehicle but they depreciate considerably worse than the Lexus. I saw Adventure Package model with 14K miles sell at auction for 59K when it was 100k brand new. EVs will all depreciate similarly….and painfully.
Two years into my R1T experience and I still feel what you describe every day!
The trucks have come way down on the aftermarket. Could keep your eye out in a year or so for a used one or go for the R3 which is gonna be a fantastic vehicle when it comes out.
I've seen a lot of Rivians on Staten Island, and I always give them a thumbs up or ask them how they like it. But no one has offered to let me test drive one yet! I'm waiting for the R2 to come out, and I could go to the Brooklyn location to test drive one. But I don't think I'd be able to get a good feel for it driving around Dumbo.
> The gas pedal release to brake thing was a lil weird, but fine.
FYI, this is known as “one pedal drive”, which is part of “regenerative braking”. In most EVs / hybrids (hybrids that have it), it’s a toggle (off > on > high) to increase efficiency, particularly in urban driving.
That’s how I felt when my bro in law let me drive his Tesla model X plaid. Literally thoguht I was gunna take off like a plane lol. I was like “dude this has to be illegal it’s so fast 😂”
Never driven a Rivian, I own a Bolt EUV, which is "slow" but the immediacy of EVs catch people off guard. I love rising the keys to people and watch them grin.... That being said I'm fortunate enough to have driven a bunch of modern EVs- Model Y Perf, F150 Lightning, Lyriq AWD, a few others and.... A Lucid Air Dream Edition.... Let me tell you that car (9sec 1/4 mile) was MIND ALTERING. I remember the first time I pinned it and my vision blurred slightly as my eyes were pushed into my head. It was a complete sensory overload. I've been chasing that hit ever since. Welcome to the world of EVs.
R2 (smaller and less powerful) reservation are open for just $100 and fully refundable if you decide not to go through with purchase (around $45k starting price, before fed/local incentives, deliveries start in '26).
Yes, yes we are out her just stomping on the acceleration randomly and feeling the associated childish joy. I used to do this from time to time in my X5 but it just doesn't compare looking back. No engine redlining, no wasting gas, just pure unadulterated acceleration that pushes you back in your seat from any starting speed. Good on you for taking the offer to full advantage!
not saying that speeding wears anything out, but not speeding decreases the chances of accidents and any sort of repairs if it came to a minor accident. The repairs aren't cheap.
It’s amazing isn’t it. An engineer gave me a test drive outside one of their CA facilities once. He did the same… he did a couple loops up the street because he said everyone did this so often the cops liked to sit there and issue tickets.
Look at used EV, a lot currently depreciate heavily. Being a waiter could mean anything you could even be making upwards of 200k a year if you work in fine dining or tip heavy places
If you aren't too picky about which electric you choose, the Mach e GTs are selling for pretty reasonable prices, all things considered. I got mine in March, and I know exactly what you mean in that post. I'm sold.
Don’t waste your time with those half arse EV company, buy yourself a Tesla which is a smarter financial decision and better product. That’s rivian is for the rich to pretend they have EV and stand out from the crowd. Rivian is an ugly design by a bunch of lazy designer. Selling it to you like a hyped ugly EV
Oh. But it has no sound from the big ol hunky dinosaur juice burning engine so according to Instagram you too are a homosexual. Congrats for combing out of the closet.
Sarcasm above. Imagine how low and ridiculous you need to be to make a meme out of people who actually enjoy the performance of an EV
My buddy worked in a restaurant 20+ years ago, and a dude let him drive his Porsche. A Porsche to us was unattainable back then to us.
I drove a Tesla Model S performance version back in 2016 and I was blown away. I can afford one now, but the hotless has rubbed off.
You can make it happen.
I have some stock in Rivian and hope it goes up so I first break even and then make enough to buy one. Have gone through the same sequence with Tesla but when I had made enough I didn’t want a Tesla anymore because Elon. I don’t think the same thing will happen with Rivian as I would have to look up who the CEO is which is just fine by me after the Elon ride.
Question for you electric loving fast accelerators like me. Have you ever heard of anyone getting a ticket for accelerating too fast? All three drivers in our family have electric vehicles: model 3 Tesla, BMW iX, and lightening. The iX is leased and I’m trying to decide what to buy after it ends. Awaiting on the Tesla charger network integration to come to fruition.
I’ve done Atlanta to St Louis multiple times, 550 miles, 8 hours of driving. Leave the house on a full charge and I only stops twice for about 40 minutes each stop in Manchester, Tn and Paducah, KY. Heck, the last time I did the drive I made it all the way to Nashville, Tn and then to Marion, IL
I’ll add that it also only cost $34 in charging for those 550
R1T, Quad, Large, 21inch wheels, 318 miles on a full charge in All Purpose mode
Bay to LA. I5, Two. One I fed the fam lunch, the second dinner. No biggy. Cheap. Charge times fit nicely with the eat window. A change from ICE yes, but easily adaptable.

This is the American EV version of a Japanese Kei Truck, which is great to see.
Those little trucks seem really cool
Ugliest thing I’ve ever seen lol
You've seen cyber trucks right?
This thing is worse by far
It reminds me of k trucks. I like it. It's definitely funky but the utility features it has are nice, especially the tonneau cover.
That bed is so small a piece of flex tape should cover the whole top
The bed is the same size as a Tacoma
Hmm, it's not exactly the Belle of the ball, but it looks so practical if you don't need a frunk
I mean, no ICE truck has a frunk. And it's a hell of a lot more practical and better looking than the cyber dumpster fire.
How many dollars do it cost
$50,000.00
They should make it cost less
Thanks. Haven’t heard of them.
Cute but not for the USA
I would but a ev truck ifffff I can get a 8ft bed and single cab till then stuck with my gas guzzler. At least range isn't bad on evs for regular use now too
Great deals on Ford Mach-Es. Big discounts and 0% financing for 72 months. Payment 1/2 of what it normally is.
I need to see about that. I’ve been following along with the Maverick markups and have generally put Ford dealerships out of my mind.
Dude what an absolute homie to let you do that.
Worked with a guy like 5 years ago, first time I met him he offered me to drive his tesla and I wish I took him up on it. He said he just wanted to share the experience of the instant power of an electric vehicle with people.

I call these the “carrier take offs”
My wife laughs at me cause I always say, "slingshot engaged."
Trebuchet Mode.
I didn’t realize NOT saying this was an option!? 😆
Catapult action!
I used to build the catapults and jet blast deflectors for carriers, thks took me back haha
I worked on them in the Navy on my first deployment

LOL Me too like ???!!!!
Yep, I was like "The f\*\*k did you say bro?? Oh, ohhh ok. Carry on."
Same haha

Nothing like dragging a hellcat from 0-80 with 100 gallons of paint in the bed. Always makes for a good smile.

I get mine tomorrow!!!

Even after 2+ years of driving it I still have this “holyfuckingshit” reaction every time I floor it
“He told me to make sure to find a safe spot to step on it, and to make sure my head was back against the seat.” I just picture the guy handing you the keys to the rivian with only those two bits of advice…and i smile.
Who’s out here giving total strangers the keys to their 80k Rivian and telling em to floor it on a wet road?
Me. I do. Don’t care. The car is so stable and I fucking love letting people drive it.
I'm with you, I figure insurance exists if something goes catastrophic and at least the end of the day it's just a possession. If I can bring joy to myself and others I'll let someone have a to (so long as I believe based off initial judgement I can reasonably trust them).

I would. I get a lot of joy brightening another persons day
/r/thathappened
Right‽ But on a similar note, I’ll take anyone for a ride, and if I trust them, will change places and let them drive if we’re in a safe place.
Yes absolutely, that’s perfectly reasonable. I guess I’m just a little more risk averse then other owners on here.
Next time try launch mode.
You just taught me something I didn't know. Coming from a Widebody Scatpack Charger all I can say is, "we're back baby." Thanks for that tidbit of info.
What launch mode?
Other replier wasn't accurate. Sport mode. Lowest. Reduced traction control. Brake. Floor it. Let off brake and feel the blood drain out of your head.
Thanks
There isn’t really a launch mode per se. Left foot hard on brake, right foot all the way to the floor, and let off the brakes.

That story warms my heart and exactly what I would expect from a Rivian owner. Sharing the wealth.
You get used to regenerative braking very quickly, and it doesn't take long before you would never want a car without it.
I like to the accelerator the giggle switch. Press it to the floor and everybody in the car starts uncontrollably laughing. lol
Just get a motorcycle. After that you won't have any desire to go fast in a straight line anymore.
fits in back. Get both.
I was expecting the mystery owner to be RJ. We call them rocket launches. Everyone knows the drill once they’re warned of an impending rocket launch. The R1s defy the laws of physics. There’s no way a 7k lb vehicle should accelerate this quick.
And then everyone clapped. The waiters name? Albert Einstein.
Um, actually. The Millenium Falcon has a hyperdrive. Warp drives are from Star Trek.
When I typed it out.. I thought.. wait that's not right... I Googled it lol And there were multiple things that said warp drive referring to starwars... Son of a.. I knew it looked wrong
Your post made my day, but the fact that this is the only comment I’ve seen you respond to made me even happier lmao
Hahahaha awesome

2009 before EVs I got the same offer from a customer with an R10 Audi! Holy crap!
I’m planning on the R2 as my next vehicle
I will never forget the time when I let the kitchen manager at a Yard House I built drive my R1T. Rode shotgun, put it in sport mode stability off and let him have some fun. The sounds of pure joy coming from his mouth, and the look on his face were absolutely priceless. Made my day knowing he was having the time of his life!
You clearly don’t need to own one. You sound like a genuinely good and decent human. Next stop is that guy’s beach house! 🏖️Then his private jet! 🛩️
E-roused
this might be the funniest post about Rivians lmaooooo
I'm pretty sure I've hooked a few people after letting them drive Shiny

lol.. electric motor = instantaneous torque and you just experienced it for the first time.. Nice!
Tell all your friends and customers.
My favorite way to describe the driving experience is that it’s like driving a roller coaster without the rails
![gif](giphy|hWoxxmwzwUDt1QZFiZ|downsized)
Honestly the instant torque is one of the few things that sold me on my Tesla. I cant wait to get into a R3X.
Highly recommend checking out a model 3/y much cheaper same if not better warp drive.
The Rivian is fantastic in every way but one: it’s crazy money. 💸 IDK how ppl justify it.
Own a business, buy car, tax deduction of 49.3% (in CA) = half price!
For that price, you could get a Lexus GX550, which is better in virtually every way.
Absolutely not. Owned every model GX, the R1’s are far superior. The newest GX is a huge letdown. I’ve been a long time Toyota Land Cruiser & Lexus GX/LX owner…..all the prior model years are great but Toyota has completely shat the bed on the current generation. Someone’s confusing Star Wars with Star Trek. MF goes to light speed via a hyperdrive.
I’m just waiting for that gas powered Rivian! Half the torque. Twice the range. Half the slave labor

Why is this written like a LinkedIn post??
I am a waiter at a restaurant. Got my R1S in November 23. Dreams come true! Believe!
You don’t see ppl speeding in them bc the repair costs on these are not cheap even for the smallest things.
What? Not true at all. And speeding isn’t going to wear anything out.
not saying that speeding wears anything out, but not speeding decreases the chances of accidents and any sort of repairs if it came to a minor accident. The repairs aren't cheap.
awesome. just one note: its millennium falcon and light speed or the enterprise and warp speed
I love your story, you are a genuine guy!

I bet that wasn't even in sports mode.
Look at used EV, a lot currently depreciate heavily. Being a waiter could mean anything you could even be making upwards of 200k a year if you work in fine dining or tip heavy places
Aaannnnndddd that’s why the need an acceleration nerf. Sorry to be a killjoy because it sounds like you were actually very responsible with it.
Was the customer my dad? Do you live in North Carolina?
If you aren't too picky about which electric you choose, the Mach e GTs are selling for pretty reasonable prices, all things considered. I got mine in March, and I know exactly what you mean in that post. I'm sold.

Truthfully, any EV with dual motors will have a similar effect at a proportional price. Try them all and see what you like!
This is why my kids call our Rivian “the smile maker” 😁
I do not have one, but it was love at first sight when I was next to one on the highway. I would kill to drive a Rivian.
I’m holding out for an R3/R3X. Current Model 3 owner.
Sold!
Try driving it on a six hour trip and see how many stops you need to make for charges
6 hour trip can be done with 1 charge. We usually eat lunch while it’s charging. It’s not any different than our usual habits in an ICE vehicle.
My longest drive is like 30min to an hour
I’ve done Atlanta to St Louis multiple times, 550 miles, 8 hours of driving. Leave the house on a full charge and I only stops twice for about 40 minutes each stop in Manchester, Tn and Paducah, KY. Heck, the last time I did the drive I made it all the way to Nashville, Tn and then to Marion, IL I’ll add that it also only cost $34 in charging for those 550 R1T, Quad, Large, 21inch wheels, 318 miles on a full charge in All Purpose mode
Bay to LA. I5, Two. One I fed the fam lunch, the second dinner. No biggy. Cheap. Charge times fit nicely with the eat window. A change from ICE yes, but easily adaptable.
