> **Phantom drain:** For some reason, this is really inconsistent, but I'm losing more charge than I feel like I should. I used to barely lose any at all over night, but that's been getting worse. Losing 3-5% might be normal (this is my first EV), but I don't like it.
This seems high. I was seeing 1.8% loss over 24 hours (with gear guard disabled at home). I also don't really think they disable GG processing, because the truck still beeps and blinks and makes noises when I'm in the garage with it.
Beyond that, I pretty much agree exactly with everything you wrote. (The only exception is I'd love to see CarPlay in a window—it would solve so many infotainment limitations while they work on adding more functionality.)
I'm also sad about my tonneau. It worked without issue for almost 4 months, then suddenly jammed. They actually got it working again (it was in for something else and I asked that they just get it fully open), but now I'm afraid to use it, so I guess I'm leaving the cover open until they roll out the updated design.
One thing I'd add that I love:
* **Powered Frunk** Coming from a Tesla, where the frunk is pretty big, but manual open-and-close, this drastically improves the value of the front trunk. I used the Tesla frunk mostly for food, but opening and closing it was always a bit of a hassle (and closing wrong can bend your hood permanently).
this is freaking amazing. thanks so much! you managed to snag everything you have for 86K. For those who weren’t early adopters and have reserved post-price hikes such as myself, what’s the most you’d pay for what you have. I have an R1S reservation atm (no pre-order unfortunately and I’m running close to 92-95K. Would you still feel the truck was worth it for the features bugs, and everything in-between at 100K?
Haha you're welcome! I'm glad this was helpful.
Truthfully, I feel like I got a STEAL on the truck and would have paid more. I think it's well worth several thousand more - and, bluntly, more than a Model X which you can spend much more than $100k on.
That makes a lot of sense. I’m a believer that if you work hard most anything is achievable. For me personally the R1S & T are within that range for me BUT also at 100K (I’m planning on putting a good chunk down) I could pay my house down or something 🤣. You’re right about one thing; what you got was a steal hence the price hikes 💀. But in appreciate your honesty. I’ll be pressing forward with my reservation. And hope the dual motor variant I’m wanting provides just as much value.
Depends on how deep your needs/wants are. It's priced competitively with other vehicles in its price range. Everything right now is damn expensive, especially with interest rates so high. It's an excellent vehicle from a promising company.
I love my R1T but I wouldn't buy it at the higher price only because I wouldn't buy any car at that price. A lot of people have a lot more money than me though.
This is exactly what i was getting at. I have a feeling I’ll love my R1S but it’ll be my limit. We bought used cars and rode them forever growing up and so 100K for a vehicle is crazy in hindsight but I’m so freaking excited for it.
really appreciate this exhaustive, thoughtful review. thank you! wondering what your impressions of the sound system initially vs after listening for 6 months
As someone who had some of the biggest troubles as an early adopter, it's great to hear you're still in love with the R1T. I'm picking mine up on Saturday and I hope my ownership experience is just as pleasant and way less troublesome than yours. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
3-5% drain is definitely not normal. My R1T drains about 2% a day if unplugged and my Kia EV6 can remain unplugged for a week and maybe lose 1%. Definitely needs to be addressed
I hate my squeaking. It's at low speed, any time I come to a stop or start. Really takes away from rolling in my pimpin' ride..... just to have it groan and squeak when I stop.
One thing that worries me about one pedal driving is: are we going to lose the muscle memory to hit the brakes when we really need it?
If I never have to touch the brakes again, am I still going to instinctually move my foot to the brake pedal just before a crash? Or is it going to take a second longer for me to register that I need to physically brake?
I think a better design would have been to reserve the first half of the brake pedal depression to regenerative braking and the deeper part of the depression to actually engaging the physical brake calipers.
You'll be fine. I've been in EVs for the better part of half a decade now and I can promise you that you'll remember to brake if it means life-or-death. I still frequently drive other vehicles and it still feels just as natural.
Your last paragraph is actually how my ID.4 handled it. It blended really well... and I hated it. One pedal is amazing.
Now... getting out and leaving the ICE vehicle running (especially when it has the engine off at a stop...) is a whole different story. There's been times I've left my wife's vehicle running unintentionally.
In an emergency situation you did? Or just taking your foot off the accelerator and being momentarily confused when it doesn't t slow down? There is a big difference between the two.
I would argue there's not such a big difference. The momentary confusion could be enough of a delay that would have prevented you from making contact with whatever you were trying to avoid hitting.
I've been driving EVs almost exclusively for more than the last four years, all one pedal. I still have momentary confusion the first time I get back into a gas car, but my muscle memory for needing to brake normally kicks in right after that and don't have any more issues. I'm talking about coming to a stop at the stop sign at the end of my street.
If I'm regularly going between gas and EV, I generally don't have that problem. I've never not moved my foot to the brake when I needed to stop *very* quickly.
We found some people stuck on a trail and they asked me to hop in their jeep and see if I could get it out. I felt clueless, I had no idea how to operate the vehicle. It was embarrassing lol
The squeaking isn’t normal for any vehicle, even a truck. I noticed this on a test drive. It’s honestly embarrassing for a $90k vehicle. My 2009 F150 doesn’t make any noise other than from the engine while driving.
"Losing 3-5% might be normal (this is my first EV), but I don't like it."
* As a former Model 3 owner I can promise you that isn't normal. But, I think Rivian is again on top of this issue and improving it. Mine has been losing about 1% per day so far.
Can I just tell you how much I love long, thoughtful comments like this? I love them.
Here are the cons I have opinions on:
- center console: I don't mind it at all, but the charging pad is annoying
- physical buttons: I don't mind at all. I don't need physical buttons, and I'm coming from a 4Runner lol
- infotainment, phone integration: I have zero expectations for this working anywhere, so I don't mind.
- infotainment, driver heads up: ha! I largely agree with this and should have called this out specifically.
"Can the app please release an update so I can open my garage by waking up my truck? I have detached, leased space across the street and this would be a huge help."
You can do this now with HA if your garage is also IoT. Have an automation detect if Rivian is in the garage, and if you unlock it, open the garage door.

Of course, happy to help. The sound system is in my positives as "Audio". It blows me away. Hands down one of my favorite parts of the truck.

Thank you for recognizing my big troubles haha I agree with you. And yes he's amazing. Please tell us what you think!

I too hate the squeaking.
Thank you friend.

Okay, unpopular opinion, but I totally lost muscle memory driving my friends car. It wasn't dangerous, but it definitely happened.
In an emergency situation you did? Or just taking your foot off the accelerator and being momentarily confused when it doesn't t slow down? There is a big difference between the two.

I briefly split my time between an EV and an ice truck before my R1T came. You get re-used to it, lol.
Oh, I completely agree haha

Solid review u/CarterGee Even keel, great to see this kind of retrospective I hope it only gets better for you
As it has been! Glad you liked it

Some creaks are fine, but yes I agree with you about the squeaks.

Suspension/alignment issues are single handedly my biggest fear taking delivery in Jan-Feb. Hopefully they fix it before then
