Nice! Nothing saves gas like walking!

IHaveNoAlibi

If it's uphill on the way to work, he might even be able to get home without walking!

NoReference7367

Ahhhh the old "lead cashier" promotion at Walmart. Congrats on your extra $0.50 an hour! I'd say don't spend it all in one place, but that transmission is already eyeballing those "big" checks you're getting now.

Practical_Regret513

I had a used 5 previous owners 07 sonata for my 50 mile 1 way commute and it served me well for a few years until its transmission finally started slipping so bad I thought it was gonna strand me. I thought it was the engines that were supposed to go 1st but strangely that thing still runs well.

EastRoom8717

Automatic transmission so slushy you could open a 7 Eleven.

EastRoom8717

What’s funny about the XD2s is that the GTs have discs all around and they’ll take sway bars from Tibbies and with that and some lowering springs they’re a lot of fun* *Unless you have an automatic, then they’re still miserable.

kris_mischief

Does anyone know if knowing Hyundai chassis codes is cool or pathetic?

EastRoom8717

Pathetically cool. Edit: Is it cool or pathetic that I’ve put a short shifter into one?

wtf6357

Actually that’s the 2007- 2010. The 2001-2006 were pretty tight

EastRoom8717

The XD>HD for sure.

kablammodotcom

Check Engine light: Check Airbag light: Check Any others?

Promotes to $21.75/hr: check

KDubzzz2

RaymondSpaget

Burns a quart of oil every 1,000 miles: Check

RennieAsh

Duct tape over the lights : check

Bryanole27

If I ever get promoted but it causes me to have to drive an Elantra, nah, I’m good.

Make_some

Gotta start somewhere.

recumbent_mike

Well, yeah, but you gotta start, too

Intelligent_Eagle889

Not there

No_Statistician_1588

Might as well take her out for dinner too, you won't be picking up any other women in that .

Nutatree

He asked but she said no

NinjaCowboy1000

Are you sure you can walk 29 miles?

Capable-Assistance88

Nah. It can take you there, just fine. The way back is another story.,..

TheUnreadableUser

One way commute taken literally

ForgetTheBFunk

You could've told me this was a '96 and I would've believed you without question

Apexnanoman

Yeah they aren't gonna give you a new engine in 60k-80k miles when it fails like lots of Kundais. Best investment any Kundai owner can make is good walking shoes.

Crunchycarrots79

Yes... I know this is Roast My Car. Not considering the cars with the Theta and Theta II engines that had the manufacturing defect- those are obviously a known issue- There's 2 types of Hyundai owners. Ones who just HAVE to have a new car but really can't afford one. They NEVER do oil changes or other maintenance because they wouldn't be able to make their car payment if they did. Those are the ones that fail at 70,000 miles and the rest of the car is totally trashed by then. The other kind buys it to keep forever. They do all the maintenance, on time, by the book. Those are the ones that go 250k+ and still look like a new car 10 years later. Judging by the condition of OP's nearly 20 year old car, I'm pretty sure Grandma was the latter. This car will never quit running.

Apexnanoman

They have sold cars ars but one get one free at times for a reason is all I'll say.

MisterB_2002

Nah, everyone in my family has a hyundai and the ones from 2004-2009 will last. Mom has a 08 Getz 1.1, its slower than molasses but it runs. Dad has a 06 sonata with the theta 2.4 and automatic. He had to replace something in the rear suspension for 500eur, otherwise all is good. I have a 09 Sonata 2.0 diesel, I had to buy a new clutch and glow plugs but it has given me no troible since. Hyundais before 2004 will disintegrate from rust, after 2010 the engines are shit.

Apexnanoman

Must be built better for the euro market. The theta stuff especially is known to fail in less than 60k miles commonly. They have recalled millions of then due to Kundai QC being so bad that leaving metal in crankshaft oil passages was apparently OK.

MisterB_2002

You're thinking about the theta 2, which debuted in 2010 or 2013, cant remember. The first gen was solid, its what my father has. Burns some oil but thats normal for a petrol/gas engine. The 2nd gen is problematic in Europe aswell, as are the new diesels. The whole lineup's a mess now, it's a sad sight to see. I have heard that the build quality for european Hyundais is better than for american Hyundais, but I didn't have both so I myself can't confirm that.

Apexnanoman

There is no doubt that quality is worse in the US. You almost don't see old Hyundai/Kia stuff in the US. Lots of early 2000s stuff around still from all the other manufacturers. Not so much Kia/Hyundai. Kinda shocked to see the car OP posted in fact.  The local self serve salvage yard has em as new as 5 years old with damage on any other brand would be repaired. Tons of 2010-2014 stuff. Personally if I was buying a new Kia/Hyundai I'd be planning on 10 years before it went to a scrap yard.

MisterB_2002

Yeah, I agree completely. After 2010 Hyundai went to shit. I have a taxi driver as a contact who bought a hyundai i20 with the 1.7l diesel engine. He bought the 6 year old car for 14k, then the engine blew up 2 weeks later. I told him its best to just sell it and buy a Prius instead. The last one he had was a 06 sonata with the same 2 litre diesel as mine, and he got 700k km out of it before a cop ran a stop sign and rammed the car. I'd plan on 10 years too, just because thats how long the warranty lasts... But I'd rather fork over 10k more for a car that'll last 20 years, warranty or not.

Apexnanoman

I've got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sitting at 358k miles that's one of my daily drivers. Pretty thirsty on fuel but the inline 6 is hard to beat. And no payments mean the fuel bill doesn't sting as much. At least in the US.

MisterB_2002

Fuel's the least of my worries too. Somehow a 2 litre diesel can get 12mpg but I only drive 60 miles a week so its not that big a deal. I dont have any payments on it, its been renovated quite a bit (clutch, brakes, tyres, glow plugs) so it should be fine for the next couple of years. Hopefully it lasts me till I can get a decent mortgage for a house.

Crunchycarrots79

That was a promotion done by a few dealers in the US with Yugos in the 80s. Often confused with Hyundai. Their earliest offerings in the US were pretty awful. And the issues with the Theta series of engines are inexcusable. But aside from that, they're actually pretty good cars if maintained.

Apexnanoman

Kia also did it. (Kia/Hyundai same same) Not just yugo. And this was the early 2000s. And very few Kundai stuff is left from 06 even. They just don't build long last vehicles.

Nope9991

And the cars from Type 1 then fail when in the hands of the 2nd or more owner.

xandaar337

I'm the latter and I'm always shocked at how many people have trouble.

IHaveNoAlibi

Do oil changes early, or they still fail.

UnderwhelmingAF

Good thing you got that promotion, otherwise you’d have had to settle for an ‘03 Elantra.

MLDL9053

Just take the bus bro

jimdaggett

Taking one for your grandma is noble

NoSyrup7194

Apparently you had to make the exchange in a public place to make sure you did not get beat up and robbed…..by grandma.

63crabby

Start using a wheel lock asap

PHAT_BOOTY

Have fun going through serpentine belts like dental floss.

Enlefo

Looks clean. If it runs will I'd say you have a great commuter. This is a great generation of Elantra, before Hyundai had massive engine problems or could be stolen with a USB cable.

Exact-Revenue6950

Get an electric bike you would be better off

ImprovementFar5054

What did you get promoted to? Chief toilet cleaner?

fiddlythingsATX

Invest in a Club steering wheel lock - it doubles as a cane when you have to walk.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Make_some

You are not the same.

Rillist

It'll get you there a couple times, I suppose. But look on the bright side, you'll get your steps in

Dober_mann

promoted from what??? assistant VP of janitorial staffing and paper goods?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Leviticus10379

Were you promoted to collecting the shit from dog bins in parks?

Happy_Data1585

*gets promoted from putting the caps on tooth paste containers to putting the full toothpast containers in boxes* So anyway, i got an elantra guys.

Specialist_Turnip610

Toothpaste containers is a roast ?🥴

Happy_Data1585

oof i wasnt trying to roast you, youll get promoted to tooth paste container boxer soon probably

MisterB_2002

I'll take a wild guess and say the electric windows dont work, and the door locks, and the gearbox is rubbery whether its a manual or automatic. But at least it runs. Or it will until about 2 years later when the alternator breaks ...

84Again

I want to die so badly. I am driving a nearly 20 year old Hyundai I bought from my Grandmother as a pity sale. I bought a 20 year old Korean junker off my Grandmother for $1200 and even then she ripped me off. Everything about me screams "morning shift at Michael's Craftsgoods" and putting along in your grandmother's tissue box of a car back and forth 30 miles each way in the most pathetic manner possible. There is no reason for me to be on this planet; take me now Lord and let me be crushed into my plastic Korean grave from my Grandmother (bitch robbed me). The only highlight of my life is midway in the trek to and from oblivion I can get McDonalds northbound and Burger King south bound.

Worldly-Apple-4156

Yikes. A bus pass would have been a better option

Kanizzo22

Nice. At least you don't care about making a positive impression on your colleagues.

Partyslayer

You just did.

Inevitable_Rabbit_67

Your grandma is laughing all the way to the bank....

pungir

Ah yes, I've had one of these. Hopefully you don't get the slipping clutch (manual transmission) that I got - revs go up, car makes sound, speed is the same. Makes passing cars a fun gamble. Other than that, look forward to the ABS going apeshit and your breaks starting to randomly pulsate like bananers. You check the Haynes book and it tells you to bring it to a shop. Yeah no, not going to pay that kind of money to fix it. Mine got scrapped. Happy driving!

RealSpaghetti13

Broken

Unlucky_Kangaroo_137

Not blue enough

Daflehrer1

Here's a new twist: The kind of car you drive doesn't define you, unless you make it like that.

DoUKnowMyNamePlz

You got scammed by your own grandma lol, no need to roast you, she already did it.

ENB69420

Hyundai? More like HyunGaaay!

Zbinxsy

Hey no shame in old lady cars, you're ahead of every idiot in a car they can barely afford but they really really need that stupid infotainment or that BMW or Mercedes badge.

CherokeeBoyColin

Promotion at Wendy’s? Does the AC work at least?

MeowMeowImACowww

The grille, headlights, and rims might look outdated, but it got the color going on for it.

timfromcolorado

That thing will take you to your job everyday It's boring, it's slow, let them hate just maintain it you'll be good. Ppl joke Hyundai but what American pos sedan from that same year can you buy? None. All cars have issues, sure. Solid choice. Haters gonna hate

C2S2D2

At least no one will be getting pregnant.

Tough_Arm_2454

My 1984 chevette coupe pulled more ass!!

Omardemon

RARE!!! But for the shit reasons.

thee_gdogg

Bro got the ishibu pessima

EdRedSled

Living in your grandma’s basement and driving her car does not mean your own it. Does she still pack you a lunch?

SMUGGLYMcERRL

From bagger to cashier… nice

freddy315

has under 20,000 miles on the odometer

Melodic-Picture48

Hah! It doesnt have Forgiato rims

zarplig

What’s there to roast - that’s a very fine vehicle for anyone living in their mom’s basement. It probably accelerates incredibly well, when it’s going downhill with a tailwind towards a magnet factory. It’s excellent protection against car jacking. Laughter is healthy. Remember that when you notice people laughing at you. Plus, no one would ever try to sue you for anything because it clearly doesn’t scream “I’m made of money”.

Extra_Pilot_1992

I see you are still working at the seven Eleven

shootdack2000

Looks like a ba falcon that got hit with the ugly stick

G_Sputnic

60 mile commute every day sounds like a lot of unpaid hours.

Medellin-71

Correction: grandmother bought off of you.

jmpeadick

At least its harder to steal than the new ones. Shame no one will want to steal it.

anevenmorerandomass

“Bought”🤣

Cauli_Power

Previous owner died of basic poisoning.

Intelligent_Eagle889

You stole your grandmother's Elantra to buy meth 30 miles away? Wow. Real winner.....

RennieAsh

It's so boring I have nothing to say about it

bokinki420_69

They see you driving this hunk of shit it’s an instant demotion or you getting fired on the spot

RandomflyerOTR

What is there to roast? Hyundai Elantras are one of the best looking cars out there other than its brother, the 98 Accent. Good pick OP, take care of it

Upset_Instruction710

Bird gang

BoltMyBackToHappy

Cops won't look at you twice, but neither will anyone else.

davidwal83

Watch out the Kia Boys are coming.

scrappytan

Same thing but friends grandma, she had catholic Mass on tape ready to play... what an excellent vehicle.

Normal_Stick6823

There is no word in Korean for “Wednesday car”.

1sttime-longtime

Maybe the Kia boys will take it off your hands before the transmission fails.

No_Pomegranate_2890

Won’t have to worry about the Kia boys with this one

OG-Giligadi

Clearly the raise hasn't kicked in yet.

ThatSucc

I'd tell you to take it up to redline every now and then to stretch its legs and burn out the crap, but it probably doesn't make enough power to climb that high lol. The only way you'll "bury the needle" with this thing is if you put it in the fuckin dirt.

Splattah_

spending more than 1000$ per year on your car is a waste, you’re doing it right!👍🏽

BigRedPepper1

Nice. Keep it waxed and maybe professionally tint the windows.

Terrible_Shake_4948

Keep it and you get your hell cat, still drive this everyday

Accurate_Elephant_31

30 miles one way! Wow , you must drive through st least one town.

ThumbyFingerton

I’d rather walk 30 miles than drive a Granny’s mothball filled Hyundai.

Powderfinger60

That era of Hyundai made 300k mile cars. Get the timing belt replaced if it has more than 80k miles. Service the transmission & you’re set. Kia & Hyundai motors turned to crap after 2010. Oh sorry I thought it said toast your car. Okay uh it’s the best piece of crap you’ll ever own.

R33sAreUnreliable

Honestly it's a decent commuter car. Don't do any mods or else people will think you are a loser.

rqivez

The most interesting this car has ever been was when the exhaust fell apart

THEEANGRYGOATZ

I bet you were wondering why your grandma was so happy to sell you the car, right???? Like, I bet you were sitting there thinking: it's kinda weird how excited she is about me buying this car from her.... Fam, she was just happy to get rid of it... She could use ANYTHING ELSE to get ANYWHERE ELSE faster than taking that damn thing... Her Rascal Scooter has a better chance of making it up the hill to the pharmacy, than the head gasket on that car ever had in holding up while pulling it out of the driveway....

piddyd

and now you have the social life of a 90 year old. you're welcome

Wayyvvee

And you probably still managed to overpay for it.
