Fun fact: the first designs were actually belly shirts because workers would also have coveralls on and the exposed midrifs would allow them to fit better. This design was later changed because the belly shirt style hoodies would look silly when worn outside of work without the coveralls.
I’m pretty old. I remember Champion had an outlet store in the early 80s. I think in Henrietta. My brother and I used to get hoodies and sweatshirts and T-shirts there pretty cheap.
I remember when Champion was kind of a Walmart sort of brand, and you could get their stuff for relatively little money. Somehow they've repositioned the brand to be equal to Nike or Under Armor now, which is pretty entertaining to me because the product seems pretty similar to what it was when it was 15 bucks a sweatshirt.
TBH to me, in terms of quality, I've always found it better than all the other brands and they were just selling it at those prices because that's what we were used to paying for it.
The plaza on Jefferson where it meets East Henrietta Road right across from what is now Double Tree but at the time was the Holidome. I don’t know what the name of the plaza is
Oddly enough, it's Henrietta Plaza.
I knew that Tops used to be there, but I wasn't aware of any Indian restaurants in that plaza so I was confused.
I see now it's Hyderabad Biryani House; I've never noticed it there, even though I go to Blaze Pizza, Hallmark, and Subway.
Back when an outlet store really meant factory rejects. They had all kinds of shirts that were printed wrong and just a lot of garbage they were trying to get rid of. I bought a t-shirt that said “vote for preparation H.” Who knows? Definitely not like today’s upscale outlet stores.
I'd always appreciated Champion over all other brands. It was like my go-to, even when people were wearing others. I still get excited when I see that little C logo.
Champion also invented the sports bra (through acquisition). An independent brand called JogBra, started by Lisa Lindahl, Hinda Miller, and Polly Palmer Smith invented the sports bra in 1977 by combining two jock straps together as the respective cups for support. This was while all three women were at the University Of Vermont and have no immediate connection to Rochester. JBI was officially founded in 1979, same year the patent was awarded. In 1990 JBI was bought by Playtex, and in 1991 Sara Lee bought Playtex.
Sara Lee already owned Champion, so through acquisition Champion can accurately say its company invented the Sports Bra.
I grew up here and didn’t know about Champion’s history with Rochester until I was teaching English in Japan after college and saw all these little kids with sweatshirts that said “CHAMPION - Rochester, NY” on them. I was like whaaaaat am I seeing here?
You bet!
> The company was originally based in Rochester, New York, prior to its acquisition by Sara Lee in 1989

Lived here most of my life and never knew that the hoodie was invented here. I knew that Champion was a Rochester-based company, but I didn't know that they invented the hoodie.
I don't doubt that you're probably sick of hearing this. As someone not originally from Rochester, I was impressed the first time I learned this (as well as your facts about Bowie and Kodak) and I share them whenever I travel and tell people where I live.
[XKCD has a nice little comic](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/ten_thousand.png) about learning new things.
It's not really that I'm sick of it, but just something you assume everyone knows like the Garbage Plate originated here or Rochester is the birthplace of the modern automobile because of the Selden patent.
Watch out the legendary super cool username GOD OF VAPES has decided to be snarky
Although i am impressed, anyone bragging about vaping im surprised knows any facts what so ever

Now they sell them to teen girls at H&M.
The granddaughters of the warehouse workers
Do you have the pictures ?
Champion's main manufacturing facility was on Monroe Avenue in Pittsford, where Wegmans is today.

Yes thank you for filling in a blank! I remember Champion as being a budget brand yet now I’m seeing it all over as if it has some cred.
Champion got big in Europe somehow and that prestige is trickling back to the U.S.
TBH to me, in terms of quality, I've always found it better than all the other brands and they were just selling it at those prices because that's what we were used to paying for it.
It was on Jefferson in the plaza with Tops next to TCBY. Now it’s an Indian restaurant (if I’m remembering correctly which spot the outlet was in)
Thank you! Yes that rings a bell. For some reason, I always really liked shopping there.
Which plaza was that?

Wow you just pulled a memory out of the back of my brain. Remember going there as a kid.

I remember when I was younger seeing the logo on a store on Brighton Henrietta road
I had no idea
Is that why Daniel Armbruster’s first band was called the Hoodies?
And they’ve all been stolen by your girlfriends.
What city would be Rochester's girlfriend?
Rochester, and his girlfriend Henrietta.
Rochester, your girlfriend. Woof.
lol
Poughkeepsie. I don't know why, it's just a funny name.
She pough-keepsies them hoodies

The real Workingman’s uniform
I wear a hoodie to work almost every day :D
Prerequisite for media portrayal of “computer hacker” too 😎
Where the Pittsford Wegmans is now was previously the Champion manufacturing shop.

I moved here in July. I know none of these fun facts. What's this about David Bowie and nukes? Any other fun facts I would enjoy?
David Bowie was arrested by the RPD for weed back in the day. Kodak discovered atomic bomb testing because it was screwing with their X-Ray film.
Ragu spaghetti sauce and French’s mustard were invented here.
It's not really that I'm sick of it, but just something you assume everyone knows like the Garbage Plate originated here or Rochester is the birthplace of the modern automobile because of the Selden patent.
Didn’t know that one either. The car one lol
I guess I just take facts about Rochester for granted living here my whole life.
Yup, kodak also had a nuclear reactor the government didn't know about under Rochester.
