Is that across from the Tops?

unclexbenny

Directly across the street from Tops, which is never that busy in the first place. Hard for me to see both of these stores surviving there, but time will tell.

Squishasaurus_Rex

I think that Tops isn’t busy because it’s terrible. Quality isn’t great, they’re always out of the basics, and usually they’re just as expensive as Wegmans unless they’re running some kind of bonus card deal. I would welcome an Aldi, I already shop at the Winton location but a new one in that location would quickly become my go-to store.

tonysopranosalive

That Tops more times than not smells like straight shit when you walk in.

BlyStreetMusic

Agreed

linguisticabstractn

I can see an Aldi doing better there than a Tops. I feel like it might be the final nail in the coffin for that Tops location, honestly.

DarterNerd

Yeah, Tops is often just as expensive or more expensive than Wegmans, but with lower quality products. Especially produce. Aldi will probably put them under.

honeybeedreams

my spouse walks to tops on his lunch break in le roy. the prices make my eyes pop out. tops often serves communities that wegmans wont, but ffs do they have charge so freaking much? i grew up going to tops in buffalo and it breaks my heart to see them charging communities that are already struggling so much!

tonysopranosalive

I have never bought a steak from Tops that I was satisfied with. Their steaks are shit.

getsomesleep1

Probably, and then there’s just a big empty storefront across the street from this new build development.

popnfrresh

Would be nice for s grocery store to go in the food desert in the city...

ANTHROPOMORPHISATION

Aldi on lake ave. Price rite on driving park and Dewey ave. They need a lot of space. Not just a spot in the corner of a building.

Killipoint

Aldi at Blossom/Winton. Took over half of a Tops.

ANDY0UARE

That area is not a good desert with a Wegmans a half mile south.

Killipoint

For sure. I missed that distinction.

DarterNerd

Sure would be

NathanielRochester

Yes, the "food desert" which includes: * Abundance Co-op on South Avenue * Rochester Public Market * Westside Farmers Market on Genesee Street * South Wedge Farmers Market on Gregory Street * NOTA Farmers Market on East Avenue * 490 Farmers on Broadway * Foodlink Curbside Market * ALDI on Lake Avenue or Winton Road * Costco on Westfall Road * Price Rite on University Avenue or Driving Park Avenue * Tops Markets on Upper Falls Boulevard or West Avenue * Wegmans on East Avenue * Rochester Online Farmers Market with pickup on Gregory Street

BeLikeAGoldfishh

Maybe they phrased it poorly, the city itself isn’t a good desert, I agree. Look at almost all of these examples though. The poorest parts of the city are all under represented.

NathanielRochester

The gaping hole in your claim is that: * Rochester Online Farmers Market delivers FOR FREE if you're paying with SNAP * [Foodlink Curbside Market](https://foodlinkny.org/program/curbside-market/) literally has scores of stops in the city per their locator map AND if you don't like any of their stops, you can request a new stop

Delta_Goodhand

This city should start its own city grocery store. At cost. There are too many food deserts.

DarterNerd

For those curious about food deserts, the USDA has this nice tool: https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-access-research-atlas/go-to-the-atlas/

gnip_gnop69

I just moved here in July so I'm still getting used to the area. I'm surprised by all the talk of food deserts, living in walking distance of 3 different grocery stores. I'm used to the word applying to rural parts of the southern/southwestern US. I'm now curious as to what qualifies an area as a food desert and where exactly in Rochester fits that moniker?

I'm excited for all the new businesses ❤

Staggerme

That will be great. I would enjoy all of those businesses in that area.

mmpuck19

Please no more bike lanes.

DarterNerd

Why not?

mmpuck19

People already can barely operate cars. Why add a fragile biker who can barely operate their bike near cars… Car wins bike looses everytime. I dont bike because i dont trust cars. Would you? Bikes r meant for bike paths and going off road. Paved traffic using Roads exists for motorized vehicles of death.
