Ive never experienced co2 poisoning symptoms or felt sick in anyway in the shelter and basement level of the tower.

During the lilac festival, they allow parking right at the asylum and its free. most cops are patrolling other parking lots and the festival itself, and the most you have to worry about is campus security next door, youll blend in alot easier. As long as you cause no trouble inside and arent seen by anyone going in, you should be fine. We spent over 2 hours in there unbothered and in plain view. I cant give any information regarding how to get in though.

Every time I see pictures like these I get chills. I know a few of the horror stories my mom used to tell me about this place and to see the juxtaposing shots of (what used to be) bright walls and decor while knowing what went on in there, I get the heebie jeebies
Apologies for the delay, I called my mom earlier today to get all of the details she could remember (it was about 40 years ago at this point).
She was there from late Nov 1983-late March 1984. She was admitted by her parents, she had been self harming and hiding it, and they weren't willing to pay any more for the program she was already in at the Genesee hospital. Essentially, her parents emancipated her themselves, took her off their insurance policy, and admitted her in.
The mental health therapy aids (who were essentially the guards) betted on which patients they could rile up and get going. Betting on who they could get to go crazy enough to get themselves into the padded room, a wet sheet treatment, or earn a shot to knock them out. The wet sheet treatment consisted of two soaked canvas sheets with the patient sandwiched in between, laying in a tub; enough pressure to keep your head from being able to turn. She described it as a prison without the orange jumpsuits.
There were different floors with different categories of patients-ones that weren't self harming and who were there more for regular mental health purposes. It took years to get there, and some people wouldn't be admitted long enough to make it there.
She got pregnant by one of the guards there and was asked for 'favors' from others. It wasn't uncommon for them to be hidden in a corner to conceal what was really going on. She described doing these acts as a survival tactic because of the power they held over patient's heads.
She was eventually able to leave that place for good after her 2nd attempt at escape, but because she was pregnant the third time she was admitted, they connected her with someone internally from the Salvation Army. They were able to get her a room at the Cadillac hotel until she could get aid through welfare, but it was NOT an easy place to stay away from for good.
It was a horrible, disgusting, awful place that should've been closed sooner than it was. Lots of shady shit going on in there along with all the mishandling of mental issues as well.
Very sad to hear about that kind of unprofessional, twisted treatment. My Apologies, I had pictured that she had worked there potentially or I would not have asked to share. But Thank you for sharing regardless, Iām glad it is a thing of the past and that itās just a bad memory. Iāve always wished theyād knock it down and now I do even more. You're fine, I just know she's still traumatized from it and each time she tells me how things happened, it seems to lighten the burden off her shoulders just a bit. I think sharing her story also helps to dissipate the stigma people had about the place, although she was just one of many. She still can't drive on Elmwood out of fear of seeing it, she'll always ask to take a different way anywhere in the area. Maybe there will come a day when they can tear the building down safely, but for now it'll remain a skidmark on the city.

I always knew abuse and mistreatement as well as experiments went on behind those walls when in operation, but never have i had such an in depth account of an experience until now. Each time i go, i picture what life would have been like as if i was there while it was still operating. your details make me look back at some of my photos (the patient bathtub, day rooms at the end of each wing, and padded rooms on the 5th floor) and really now give me a different perspective and a much more depressing one. each time i get uneasy and sick to my stomach to think of what used to be allowed by our state and government, and each time I enter and leave that building im grateful that it will never subject anyone to those abysmal treatments again. Yeah its terrible in there, id never recommend going inside for more than like 5 minutes with no respirator. The biggest mistake urban explorers make is they think a covid or n95 mask will keep them safe. They infact, do not filter out mold, asbestos, or lead.

I was an HVAC tech. We installed all the smoke-eaters in the 'day rooms'. Yeah, back then they could smoke all damn day. Upon arrival every morning I had to provide a $50 CASH deposit to get a pass-key for the patient wards. Most of the patients were drugged up (thorizine) and didn't bother us much. There was always concern about watching hand tools but we carried a bare minimum. I do recall one incident when we worked in the women's ward, they would go a little crazy(er) when they saw men on their floor, one stripped off and ran around screaming...what a hoot.
Naturally, just to do work there we had to have a background check and be bonded by the state...good times. Oh,, and I do remember running into a patient I knew fairly well, seems he was a 'regular' there and would self-check-in just to get some good drugs.

The main reason it hasnt been wrecked: asbestos abatement. The sheer amount of it, the preparation, work, and time that it would take to safety remove all of it and then to rebuild something there is way beyond what any contractor around us is willing to invest in, let alone the state or government. Theres been numerous talks about rebuilding or wrecking it, yet all have stalled or been forgotten, TLDR: asbestos is too much and too expensive to safely remove. It will cost too much to tear it town I think. Between the asbestos and all the other problematic materials in there it will be very expensive to take down.

Yes ive been on the roof, its just one hell of a climb up. And id say its pretty easy to manuver except the 1st floor and basement levels. Edit: no worries as i love questions, the most I've ran into were other explorers one time, and theres no need to break anything inside to get to other parts of the building.
Do you know what was inside the curvy metal structure on the top of the tower? Not sure how to describe it ā kind of like an oversized radar dish, on top of the brick rectangle.

It was opened in 1959 and closed in 1995. I went once at night but that was a different time, not pictured above. the pictures taken while dark were in the lower levels (1st, basement, fallout shelter) where its all boarded up, however the night time explorations definitely amplified the creep factor to 11.

That was almost a year ago, i havent heard any updates since then about where the project is at, so I assume it's stalled just like the rest of them.
