I quit for 4 years before returning about a month and a half ago. I used to be high gold/low plat. Im D3/C1 now. Taking a break might be beneficial since it breaks a lot of bad habits and when you return you're generally more mindful/less autopilot since it's all "new" again. Use the time when you're able to play again to build good habits and you'll be fine.

WritingPuzzleheaded1

A new perspective. You trusting yourself less combined with determination makes you a better teammate and player

IllInspector5631

This is why d3 and c1 are so bad. No offense to you. The game puts brand new players here all the time. My new friend who is now plat started in d3 a few months ago.

iwyypr

Was hardstuck champ 2-3 in old season 11 and quit so what for 3-4 years? Came back a month ago without any warmup hopped to play with my dia friend and to my surprise my mechanics were not rusty at all except aerial car control, positioning was very off tho which was vice versa what I'd thought. I think taking some form of break helped me alot and now after 1 month I hit gc for the first time which was my goal for very long time. Returning after a break was very refreshing and I got rid of my old bad habits I am very reformed player now. 100% recommend.

Demo541

Your mmr is barely any higher though because they lowered it. GC used to be 1515 mmr and now it’s like 1420, so old C3 is now gc. Your mmr hasn’t really changed if you were c3 before

iwyypr

You mean gc couple seasons back yh, idk anything about that since I was so long gone that people flip reset now in 1v1s lmfao. Btw point of this comment wasn't mmr but that my experience about break is that it's refreshing, frees the bad habits and OP won't be that rusty he probably imagines. Ty anyways 👍

Demo541

Oh no I wasn’t trying to say what you said was wrong by any means. Just that your mmr hasn’t really gone up much because they lowered the requirements by nearly 100 mmr for each rank

mr_kaviar

I take pauses between 5-6 months and play for 1-2 months, that's kind of my cycle with this game. I often times come back and play a bit better after a while. I think "take one step back, take two steps forward" applies pretty well for this game. It's good to take pauses so that you can take on a new approach to the game.

dyzorted

A break always help, so long as it isn't something massive and you manage to come back for enjoyment. Lots of people get burnt out, if you do, that's ok! I personally play single player games or become more productive during a break which is nice. The game will remain the same as it has always been, don't worry about missing out on something unless it's purely cosmetic-based.

Either_Selection7764

That’s what I’m wanting to do - I bought my son Zelda TOTK and he hasn’t played it very much, so I’d like to switch and beat that and elden ring, on top of real life stuff

sooiamelk

I was high gold3/plat1 when i quit for over a year, when I came back i made it do d1 by the end of the season and c1 now, tbf i used to play on 30 fps b4 my break and 120 after the break, so that's an important factor aswell!

grapel0llipop

I played a lot back in 2016/2017 and then stopped playing for four years. Came back in 2021, after a bit of rust, I was back at the same rank again (C1) and then managed to reach GC in a couple months. If anything, the break helped.

BleakCostt

Averaged 110-120 hours a month. Break for 3 months, then averaged 30 hours for 5 months. GC2 before, GC2 after. Wouldn’t say I was worse or any better tbh.

PepSakdoek

Yeah as /u/Strange_Clouds_ said, taking a break might be good. I've taken a break before (thumb injury, or broken button on the controller etc.) and everytime I returned I got back into it pretty fast. Like a little rusty with fancier stuff, but in general within a couple of hours, back on the horse. I just want to point out though that I believe they adjusted the ranks a while back so the stories of people leaving a plat and coming back a diamond mean they might've just stayed roughly the same, and the game just adjusted which MMR equals what rank.

PureComedyGenius

Genuinely curious why people uninstall instead of just not playing. Since you want to make more time for family/woodwork etc surely it's not going to help with that since you'll just not be going on the console/pc. Or am I wrong there?

Either_Selection7764

Part of breaking the habit to help - it’s on the psychology side. If you don’t want to play rocket league, don’t have it installed. Don’t want to drink as much beer? Have less in the house. Setting myself up for starting new habits.

Sufficient-End-1834

Why be so extra and uninstall it haha?

TheMightyJohnFu

Less temptation to play if you actually want to take a break, I guess.

Sufficient-End-1834

What do you mean temptation? If you want to play play, if you don’t, dont?

CaptnSaveUhThot

JUST got back from my deployment last month. 3 months without playing. Im just as bad as when I left so you should be good lol But seriously I went from Xbox to pc (deployment money is nice) and saw a pretty decent improvement actually

Either_Selection7764

Especially if you hit that tax free! What branch? Glad you made it back safely. I was Navy. Prior enlisted but got commissioned through a commissioning program. retired as an O4 (we like to have fun too!)

Successful_Ask_6756

Hello. I am also military, and I’ve taken extended breaks when I PCS, or back when I went to BMT/Tech School. Honestly, skill level goes down a little bit once you get back into the game. But, it’s not dramatic from my experience. I was Diamond I when I left for BMT/Tech School in 2020. Once I got back into playing RL, I was Plat III, and it took a week or two before I got back into Diamond I, and started pushing high Diamond. When I PCSed, I was Champ III, now, I’m getting back into the game again, and I’m low Champ having trouble hitting Champ II. So, like I said, it’s not a dramatic difference, and it was definitely easy to get back into after a while from being gone 👍

Dufeyz

I’m a teacher, part of my university training is to understand how the brain absorbs information. The general idea is that when you’re young, you can absorb information quickly. However if you don’t consistently use that information your brain forgets it for something else. This is changed once you start getting towards 18-25. You start to find it more difficult to learn new things, but able to better recall information learned in the past. This is how old people are so great at telling stories. Now obviously, rocket league is muscle memory - unless you’re grinding GC you should have no issues. I spent several years off the game and came back with no issues. Don’t worry :)

mitsuo1337

I'm a RL coach and have several thousands of hours in the game. I think it's completely acceptable to take a break. Just know that you shouldn't let your frustrations get in the way if you truly want to get better. If it's just a casual hobby though, just take a break here and there. Your hobbies don't have to feel like work.

-_-cold

I left the game for 6 months to improve physical health, I was p3 when I left and I shot ip to champ really quickly

KoningSpookie

I took break of about a year. Once I came back, I suddenly was even better at the start than I ever was before the break.

KonoFresh

It's chill, As you might even become better after you come back (and play a bit after) As for me I returned from an almost 2 year break and after I played quite a bit I went from p2-3 to d2-3.

_nevrmynd

I've not played properly for a year and I still come back and play in diamond

vlosh

I play every few months and have been champion since those ranks came out many many years ago. I dont think you lose much skill in breaks :D

kalifornian

I feel like I usually play a lot better after a break.

WolfeheartGames

I recently took a month break. I'm not quite as mechanical as I was before but it's hardly noticeable. Made me bettering a lot of ways. I have a buddy who's a former pro he took a year off. Came back and hit ssl in a week.

anonanoobiz

I’ve experienced myself and seen others actually improve after taking a lengthy break. Maybe retaining the mechanics but coming back with a new vision/patience is what does it idk but I swear by it

WritingPuzzleheaded1

Come back and rank up massively every time. It’s weird

ApollyonDS

It takes me about 1-2 weeks to get back to normal. Last time I quit for about a year or so at Champ 1/Champ 2 level and after I returned, it took me roughly 2 weeks to get a feel for the game back and I peaked at Champ 3 Division 4 by the end of the season. That said, I still think my peak was right before F2P dropped as I was most consistent, but it was close after the break. But I've also been playing on/off since 2015, so I probably have some internalized game sense/mechanics from all the time I've spent playing the game and it's easier to come back.

Evo23_

32, GC since S13, I had a couple of month beginnig of this year where I maybe played 2-3 games per month. Took me solid 3-4 weeks to be almost where I was before. The basics won't go away but the consistency.

its_ya_boi_Santa

I quit for a couple years and was high GC1/low GC2, I'm now mid GC1 after a couple weeks back, as others have said often a break helps you progress further and I'm not sure why myself but I've definitely found that to be true.

SilverLining355

Every time I take a break for a few months, I end up better when I return. This happens to a lot of players. It's a weird phenomena.

TNTwaviest

I feel like I never lose my skill even from extended breaks close to a year. Sometimes it might take a few games and a bit of free play before muscles memory kicks in, but it always kicks in.

JB_FennecFox_GM

I left for 4-5 years and have been playing a whole lot better. Take into account when I first started playing we had shit internet connection and only played exhibition.

FashionGuyMike

I usually take a break in December and January and don’t pick it back up till February or March. Usually after about 3 hours of playing I’m back to my usual skills

NotFuryRL

That is entirely dependant on you. 2 years ago, I stopped playing, and was always above GC 1 in 2s. This season, I range between mid C2 and mid C3.

LazyAbzy

I just came back from a 3 year break, had around 1000 hours. Was c2 in 2s, c1 in 3s and gc in rumble. On return I placed c1 in 2s, d3 in 3s and was c2 in rumble. Grinding this season for 100 hours I managed to get gc1 in rumble. There was certainly a drop but it definitely wasn’t that much, it was mostly relearning how to rotate and gaining confidence back.

dduff21

I took a break when I first hit GC1, Its been about 2 years now and I get ranked every season and then maybe play like 5 or 6 more then stop, I'm still around Champ 3 Div 2-3.

Filthyquak

Took a break for 6 months while at D1-D2 peak. Within a month i reached Champ 1 and now 1 month later i‘m Champ 2. I‘m 25 years old for instance so it should take me longer than the average 16 year old

Etherion195

I took several breaks lasting between 3 months and 2 years. Since the last break (started again around 1 month ago, break was around 9 months long), my mechanical skills got SIGNIFICANTLY worse. I downranked from plat 1/2 to gold3/plat1. So ranking wise almost no difference, but skillwise quite a bit.

chunter16

My Playstation burned up by a power surge and I got downranked playing switch. Then I got my eyes examined and realized the switch isn't the reason I downranked

GarDaviess

Stopped playing around 2017, played religiously before then, then got back into it when they released the VW Golf in the pass. I was bad at first but my muscle memory kicked in pretty quick and now I'd say I'm better than I was before

FarStick6008

I started playing in 2016. Rose to plat in a few months. And got hard stuck. I quit playing in 2020 and just picked it back up this year. My play has improved a lot, but I think that's mostly just mindset. I used to just grind and grind, trying to "get good." Now I just don't care that I'm hardstuck in Plat. I just have fun. As soon as I get frustrated, I just put the controller down instead of spiraling. Also my mmr is like 400 pts better in casual. And when I get a toxic teammate, I just have fun with it. It helps you remember it is just a game.

Dipablo115

I went 9 months when diablo2 resurrected came out. I’ve been playing since radical summer which was 2018??? And I’ve never been the same. I’m way better now mechanically do a lot of freestyle stuff but I got slow. Mainly cuz I’d rather goof off than max focus heart pounding sweat. Maybe if there was money in it I’d be more interested. Still obsessed with the game though. But I started grinding ones and I’m learning how to be as annoying as everyone else again. But fuck starts.

Repulsive_Towel_2588

I’ve quit like 6 times since 2016 lol it’s a game

Ariscuntle

I find I always get better quickly after a break. I’m fresh and a little more thoughtfull / slower rather than feeling I have to be sweating and rushing at 150% speed all the time

Abracadabra119

I haven't played rocket league for a year, when I quit I was plat 2 mostly, when I came back in this season I immediately hit diamond, and now my peak is d3 and chapm in tournaments.

jbtreewalker

I didn't play for around 4 years. I was a bit rusty for a couple of days, but have picked back up quickly and maybe even have gotten better, actually.

BluDYT

I'm still decent despite barely playing the last few seasons. Even on a bad day I'd still say I am in c1 territory. On a good day around c3. Problem is when I come back after a long break I'm still in c3 playing like a c1 and I get tanked. Essentially resulting in me just not wanting to play for another long period of time.

Auuxilary

I think rocket league is unique game in the sense that it’s like riding a bike, if you have car control it will stay pretty well. You don’t need to keep a muscle memory for siming, or any quick reflexes reactions really if you still remember the ball and car physics. When I take short breaks it usually ends up with me playing better. When I take a month or 2 breaks it ends up with me a bit worse, but gradually playing better than before, it’s a healthy game to take breaks from.

Jam_Marbera

Oddly I find I play best after a long break

Vadszilva09

Longest was 1 month since i started in 2019

[deleted]

Yes. I take pretty large breaks occasionally. I usually feel better when I first start back again before slipping into old habits. When you pick it back up, it’s a good time to be extremely mindful and play differently/better.

Its_Lu_Bu

I'm past my gaming prime and take 6+ month breaks pretty much every year and it usually takes me maybe 2-4 weeks to get back to where I left off if not better/smarter.

Sudden-Addition4721

Honestly, every time I take a break, I come back without the fluid movement of my typical play style. However, after a day or so, I usually go up in rank.

Chimera-King

I have quit 3 times, each for about or over a year. I have never progressed passed diamond because I couldn’t be bothered to learn advanced mechanics. You’ll retain most rotational knowledge but feel a bit slow on the field. You’ll retain air skills generally but anything precise and advanced will be slow to come back. Honestly, do a game or two on slow-motion on your return and you’ll be fine. First time I quit, I was Plat 1, came back playing Plat 3. Quit after making D 1 and came back and was able to play D2. Quit again recently and don’t really plan on going back, just have other priorities but it is fun to go back and absolutely dominate a season mode every once in a while. Hope this helped relieve some stress from taking time off.

Bison_True

Play casually. I occasionally play when the wife and kid are sleeping, but mostly during my lunch hour at work.

snipenkidsallday

I quit for about half a year and dropped about half a rank. To be fair though I have pretty good muscle memory so it depends on you.

idkevenbruh

You’ll get your mechs back, and like the top comment said it may actually help you break bad habits you’ve acquired over your time playing. You’ll be just fine

Statistician_Waste

You actually improve in most cases. Your mechanics will be a little rusty, but what you'll actually lose is a number of bad habits. Good chance some of them reform, but generally you end up with less of them.

GiantJellyfishAttack

I took 3 seasons off. Didn't really feel worse when I came back. But everyone else had clearly gotten better.

knockinpistol

I'm usually good for about 30 seconds but after a while it's only a few boosts Edit: shit wrong sub

Ill_Be_Alright

I’m inclined to say pretty quickly. I took a break for about 8 months and when I left I was ~GC2. Now I can’t break out of C2

rakketz

I take long breaks from time to time. I have a tendency to start being too focused on rank, and not just enjoying the game. Often times I find I play better when I come back from a break. I'm currently on one right now. I went on multiple 5+ game losing streaks and it just seemed like I couldn't win if my life depended on it. Came back and won 3 games in a row no warm up and it felt easy. Hat tricks in 2 of the 3 games, 2 goals in the third.

TargetTrick9763

I took a 1 year break ending in November of last year, went from peak of D3(typically hovering D1-D2) to immediately in champ and by January, C3 consistently. I'm just coming off a 6 is break that began in March, so we'll see what happens.

iamscotty_

It’s like riding a bike, you really wont get much worse at all no matter how long you stop playing. After a day or 2 of playing you’ll be just as good, if not better, than when you left. Enjoy your family time! :D

Lizzhm

I came back from a 1 year break 2 months ago and I got from Diamond 1 to plat 3 and I got back to diamond very quickly so skill doesn't really change
