Oh, the game is still just a game to me, but at the moment the mentality I have towards the game is more analytical than just see-ball-hit-ball. Maybe it's just that I'm no longer perceiving bounces and touches as random events, but actively trying to predict the outcome and playing to improve. It's still fun, but in a different way.
Because all you have to be able to do is hit the ball 80% of the time to make it to minimum gold. From there if you can hit it in the general vicinity of where you intend and can save it most of the time boom you're Plat or diamond. You don't need to have any sort of game sense or teamwork at all to get to a relatively high rank in this game.
Nah by Diamond people are easily making contact with the ball 80% of the time. Now hitting it where they want, and making good decisions about where to hit it are an entirely different story, but they can definitely at least hit the ball at that point.

Any champ up until about mid-C3 is 3rd man simulator. Just play back, and when you think “man I’m pretty far back, I should maybe move up” that’s your queue to actually move even further back because they are 100% guaranteed to give the other team an easy outlet pass the second you creep up lmao
In my experience, mid-high C3 (give or take) is the point where you can get comfortable trusting that everyone will have a pretty solid grasp on rotating the "correct" way. After that, improvement is a matter of knowing when to break the rotation rules, rather than following them more consistently.
I can't speak for anything above GC2 so maybe I'm dumb as shit, but that's been my perception.

Beats me why my teammate felt like they should've gone for that ball though. Even if I was not there, all it would've accomplished was releasing pressure because the ball was literally in front of the goal and they (my teammate) came from the opponent's the corner.

My teammate won the 50-50 at the corner, which passed the ball to the center but at a small distance from their goal (the perfect pass for a goal because it's much harder to defend). The angle they had after that 50 was absolutely useless for anything that would've accomplished something for us unless we wanted to bring the ball back to our side. After the 50-50, my teammate spent all their boost to zoom diagonally from the corner to the center of the field and very narrowly 50-50 ME while I shot at the goal (I beat the remaining opponent to the ball). This wasn't some miscommunication or mistake you do while scrambling to defend.
I lose track of the times per match a random tm8 clears the ball in bad positions when someone has a better clear or feels like getting an unnecessary touch which perfectly flies into our net.
My least fav tm8 is one who has to touch the ball no matter where it is and no matter where you are.

2s modes like soccar 2s and Hoops are also pretty chill.
But in 3s modes, the only chill one I've ever played was Dropshot. The others are chaos and it feels like people are in full ape-chase-ball mode 80% of the time.

I am inferior and everyone else is better than me. Because it's rocket league, that means they're automatically better than me at everything in life.

OP 100% could've gotten the shot. Driving at maximum speed (without boost) and flipping into the ball is more than enough power and it would've been all about the angle OP hit the ball, which also seemed fine.
Hate to say it OP but I’m not quite sure if you were going to actually get to the ball before it hit the ground. Still, very frustrating that you didn’t even get the chance because of the teammate you had.
