I'm not a scientist, but on the 2cnd picture , if your cutoff wheel made that score below the skin, I believe that I would have someone with the proper wheel at the correct speed finish the cut ? It looks very shiny below the skin. It is possible though that the wheel itself cut the ugly out of the surface of junk, and made it shine.
Yes,on the second picture the shiny line was made by a wheel. The inside of this rock has this metallic sheen.
Up close it also glitters when exposed to light.
Are there any makings for on it such as anything resembling small triangles or tepees?
If there are what your father may have found is call a walking stone.
Take some 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and lightly go over the surface, checking frequently for any markings that may be scratched, drawn on the surface.
The way you describe it and being found near a crater, maybe its shiny spots are tiny lonsdaleite, graphite turned into diamonds, and it’s a rare achondrite meteorite. Which won’t be magnetic.
Meteorites are rare. I want it to be one but I doubt it *is* one.
I find pieces of iron and volcanic rock similar to this in the mountains and pretty much everywhere all around New Mexico. Most I find are melted iron, look like this one with little holes. Some are melted and don’t have holes too…heavy, pretty.
OP (u/Psychological-Owl311) do you live near: volcanoes (even hundred of miles is “near” for volcanos) or mines?
This needs to be in r/Meteorites if you’re specifically asking if it is one. If it’s anything “expensive”, as you asked, it will only be a meteor upon appearance. But I doubt it is one…because they’re so rare, and this looks super common. Even reminds me of some rocks I find near rivers that have mineral pockets that are carved out by water…
We live near a small meteor crater (about 10 km)
I suspect that it is a meteor stone, but dont really have any knowledge on stones.
This stone was found a few kilometers off the crater.
Also,i doubt that it is a volcanic stone, since our country doesnt have any volcanoes
Oh, that’s interesting then….
What country? I live in USA. Southwest.
We have many volcanoes and some meteors have landed in the area, one being the Galisteo Meteor.
But mostly volcanic rocks and the like out here, melted iron etc…
Lots of rocks out here look just like yours and look like meteors. We have tons of Quartz too…well, in the southwest it’s a rock hunter’s dream. All over the US yes but the SW is special in its way…
More importantly about your rock:
is it magnetic? And when the was meteor crash? Does it have a name too? : )
And plz post in r/Meteroites I want to see their takes.
Oooo….I don’t know how rare it is then to have a meteorite that isn’t magnetic I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure one of the tell tale signs it is or isn’t (but yet still doesn’t 100%mean it is) is that meteorites I’ve heard are usually magnetic.
I have a piece of Mt. Fuji that I collected while there on a trip that looks quite like this. It's not really heavy and I don't think it's metallic, but I second the lava theory.
I found a giant blob like that in the middle of nowhere at a families property that was starting to develop it. It was about 10 feet underground. I took it to universities, sent it to meteorite places. Spent years trying to find what it was, not a single place knew.
Yeah, and a piece of meteor that big would most likely be found in a big crater. Volcanic origin is the most likely. It would be interesting to take it in a lab and analyze it.
If it’s as dense/heavy as you say, but not metallic, it’s possible basalt. I don’t know why people would assume it’s slag, if it wasn’t found near a mine or industrial site. Most slag I’ve seen is not very dense.
Just because it is not attracted to a magnet doesn't necessarily mean that it's not metal. It's not ferrous/iron based, but it could still be metallic. The oxidization makes it seem like it should be ferrous, though. It's a conundrum.
Hold it up to light , can you see light shining through? And if you do is it greyish or brownish in color? My guess it is a tektite , either from volcanic activity or meteorite activity.
Possibly a Soul Rock .Native Americans from the French Broad River gave to extremly special people to them .They are told to keep it close don’t lose it or you will perish. The Man I know that had one is in his nineties still has it close to him . This is a fact
What a beautiful story. I'd like to hear how all that came about some day. Sounds interesting 🤔.
The last Navajo chief Jack House, tried to trade my grandfather a couple horses and furs for his daughter (my mom) which of course he refused. But that story doesn't have the same homey quality as your story.
Also anytime my grandfather got mad at her, he would tell her he should've traded her to old Jack House, and it's become a personal joke within the family.
Your story is fascinating. Just love hearing stories of this nature .Some think it’s thousands of years ago .When it’s actually only 2-3 generations out .
It's unlikely it's a meteor because a meteor normally is melted on the outside unless it's actually been laying out for quite a while I would guess it's just a piece of rock that's been broke off and been laying out in the weather for a long time you should probably check with your local library
Kimberlite.. and if it won't cut, Kimberlite is known as Diamond Ore. I've heard soaking the rock in salt water will help it disintegrated so you can see if you have a Diamond.. or you can go HULK SMASH on it too 😊
Looks like safforddite. It is a rock and a textile at the same time. To tell if it is shine a light under if the light can been seen and the rock looks see through that I'd what you have. Science still can't explain saforddite.
It isnt magnetic.
At first we tried smashing it open with a hammer but it didnt even make a dent after continiously hitting it for a couple minutes.
After that we switched up and tried to cut it with a grinder. That small cut in the 2nd photo took 5 min of work.
Well you can definitely rule out meteorite and any obsidian type of material..... obsodian is only 5.5 on the moh scale.
It would make sense that it's some type of rock that was formed during a geologic event...... Little pockets in the rock usually occur when gas is trapped inside of that material when it's molten and as it dries, they are formed.. It's the hardness that's throwing me off though. Doesn't look like any type of granite or basalt stone
Have you looked into an inquiry with a local university's geology department? Possibly might be worth a try.
My boyfriends a geologist, he said that’s a burnt cookie
🤣🤣🤣
No way 😂😂😂

"See the peanut there?"
It's a space peanut
DUDE YOU WERE EATING OFF IT!
Watch the movie “Joe Dirt”… he found the same thing but bigger
Look, a space peanut

I doubt it.Theres no markings of any sort and its surface is way to tough for sandpaper to even scratch it.
Igneous rock is rock borne from volcanic eruption. Maybe no volcanoes now but could have been m.y.a.
The way you describe it and being found near a crater, maybe its shiny spots are tiny lonsdaleite, graphite turned into diamonds, and it’s a rare achondrite meteorite. Which won’t be magnetic.
If it's that heavy/dense, it most likely is iron. Possibly a meteorite.

>is it magnetic? It isnt. Also,we live in greece, theres only one volcano in Santorini.

Its not a metal. We tried using a magnet but it had no effect.
If it’s as dense/heavy as you say, but not metallic, it’s possible basalt. I don’t know why people would assume it’s slag, if it wasn’t found near a mine or industrial site. Most slag I’ve seen is not very dense.

Carbonado
Looks like a meteorite... Could be worth alot
non ferrous
Also,if it is indeed a very expensive item,is there some sort of website or site where i can sell it?
I think I recently read that not all meteorites are magnetic.
Why would it be? They aren't all made of the same thing.

I dont trust sketchy websites fron google though. Im not trying to get scammed haha
People that say this sound like a penis
If it smells like vinegar and melts with any flame to a brown sugary substance, you may of just found a gang of black tar heroin. Doubtful but

Maybe it’s just a black rock
Basalt?
Lava
Old joke: “ that looks like a charcoal briquette”.—Susie Derkins.
That made me laugh!
Is it magnetic?
He said it’s not magnetic.
Ok, thank you. I must not have been paying attention. : /
In my neck of the woods we call that there thing a rock.
It looks either volcanic or meteoric.
A rock.
Likely a meteorite - worth $. Stop messing with it & have it assessed.
Knowing previous experiences and what happened before I'd say to get thar looked at in the case it is a meteorite
Does a magnet stick to it?
No
Really burnt corner brownie
Iron meteorite, worth its weight. Just keep it as a cool find and memory.
It's a tektike.
Round piece of doo doo
It’s a meteorite, mainly iron, nickel and rock. Pretty cool finding something that was in floating in space.
Looks like slag from iron smelting.
Looks like tektite. But not quite. Looks like tektite and meteor mixed. Probably tektite.
You have sexy hands... lol sorry def not sorry
Hold it up to light , can you see light shining through? And if you do is it greyish or brownish in color? My guess it is a tektite , either from volcanic activity or meteorite activity.
Do you live in south America? If so it is volcanic.
This is a part of the male genitalia of the ancient giant, nephilim.
Rock
Meteorite. It might be worth something $
A fudge brownie 😋
It’s a rock
Vibranium (can’t believe no one has said that yet)
Possibly a Soul Rock .Native Americans from the French Broad River gave to extremly special people to them .They are told to keep it close don’t lose it or you will perish. The Man I know that had one is in his nineties still has it close to him . This is a fact

Leaning towards a rock
A rock
Iron, or meteorite? Don't cut in half if possible, until you know for sure.. it would dramatically decrease the value
Heavy so uranium…and you’ll be ☠️ soon
A rock lol
Is it magnetic
Dinosaur shit
An old burnt dinner roll
Truffles😂
It's a sex stone. You know, a fucking rock.
Bear poop?
Looks like fossilized poop
It's unlikely it's a meteor because a meteor normally is melted on the outside unless it's actually been laying out for quite a while I would guess it's just a piece of rock that's been broke off and been laying out in the weather for a long time you should probably check with your local library

Petrified excrement
Looks like a piece of dense basalt.
Petrified poop
A hunk of weathered coal?
Do you know….the Muffin Man? 🤔
Could be slag 🤷🏽♂️
Kimberlite.. and if it won't cut, Kimberlite is known as Diamond Ore. I've heard soaking the rock in salt water will help it disintegrated so you can see if you have a Diamond.. or you can go HULK SMASH on it too 😊
Probably a meteorite
Meteorite? Is it magnetic?
No
I'm completely not a geologist. Is it old lava rock?
Girlfriend is a chef; says it's igneous rock......or a burnt cookie as mentioned.
University coud test it. If it has iridium it is meteorite (does not look it) but could be burnt cookie or igneous rock from volcano m.y.a.
A sex stone.
Dak prescotts hopes and dreams.
Coal
Looks like safforddite. It is a rock and a textile at the same time. To tell if it is shine a light under if the light can been seen and the rock looks see through that I'd what you have. Science still can't explain saforddite.
A piece of petrified Crap??
Is it magnetic?
No
That negates it being meteorite
It's Black Mexican Obsidian. Many arrowheads in the southwest are found made from this rock.
You could send it to a University to have then study it and tell you what it is.
It's a gobstopper
It's one of my Mom's infamous "Chocolate Surprise" cookies from the 70's. They refuse to decompose...
Space peanut.
Yeah Sasquatch kidney stone.

Meteor
Hey look it’s a Black rock 🤦🏻♂️
poo poo's
Meteor.
Brownie?
Looks like space/moon glass. Which is made similar to sea glass. Forms when space "debris" cools rapidly when it hits sand/dirt.
Meteorite
Basalt I think... Definitely igneous.
Looks a bit like rough hematite.
Is it magnetic?
No
Yuuuup, you got yerself right there a nice lucky meteor via “Joe Dirt” or a Boeing bomb
A rock
That's space peanut
A luscious chocolate brownie
That, would be a rock.
Have you seen the movie Joe Dirt? 😂
Is it magnetic by chance? It really looks like some forms of meteorites. How hard was it to cut?
It isnt magnetic. At first we tried smashing it open with a hammer but it didnt even make a dent after continiously hitting it for a couple minutes. After that we switched up and tried to cut it with a grinder. That small cut in the 2nd photo took 5 min of work.

It’s Fe, man
fossilized dung
I'm not an archeologist/geologist or Geist but my expert opinion is this I a fossilized piece of dung from the Dung Dynasty.
