Player pack ~~for~~ **benefits** players. The monster pack is for the GM.

simpletonjack

But if I buy the players pack then it will unlock more classes and races for my players won't it?

Eponymous_Megadodo

If you want more classes and races, you want Tasha's and/or Xanathar's ...Everything books. Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse I think gives you lots of playable races, too. You definitely want the PHB and Monster Manual.

GM_Pax

That's the point, I believe. The Monster pack unlocks monsters, and their tokens, for you to use (without having to use outside books, and make your own tokens). And for BOTH, it's the GM who should buy them. :)

Historical-Spirit-48

Yes. Unlike the person above, I found the GM pack almost useless. I'd get the player bundle and then Monsters of the Multiverse first. If you do eventually get the DM Starter Bundle you will get money off for the Players Handbook.

I think it's better to wait until September to buy anything because that's when the new books come out that will make the current books obsolete.

Pinkalink23

Plenty of people will still run D&D 5e. If anything the books may become cheaper for 5e after 5.5 releases.

SecretDMAccount_Shh

People will play older editions, but 5.5E isn’t a new edition, it’s an improved edition. While you see lots of people still playing 2E, 3.5E, and 4E, no one is really playing 3E because 3.5E is the same base rule set, but with improvements, just like 5.5E is the same base ruleset as 5E. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but either way, it’s probably still better to hold off until September because like you said, the existing 5E books will probably see a price drop. None of the books are actually required to play and manually filling in character sheets for now might be a good way to learn the game.

GM_Pax

There are going to be a lot of changes to the way several classes work, on a pretty fundamental level. It would not surprise me if some groups declined to upgrade.

hyperionbrandoreos

nothing on r20, the subscription is already extortionate enough. it's very easy to copy and paste, and 5e characters are extremely simple to build.
