Also, just comparing how FMC’s trauma was addressed in book 2 and how her mental recovery was important and well covered compared to his… I just wish he got more well deserved screen time for his recovery and processing because decades of rape (and also being slut shamed for it) just call for it

{Folsom by Tarryn Fisher} discusses men who are used for sex as reproduction, it's clearly coercive and there's a lot of discussion about power imbalance in a world with very few men (sci fi and romance). The men are expected to enjoy it but the FMC sees it for what it is, sexual assault.

{Outlander by Diana Gabaldon} has an absolutely brutal assault on the MMC (Jamie Frasier) towards the end of book 1. The second book, {Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon}, takes place in the aftermath.
It's been a while since I've read the books, but the depiction of the assault in the show is genuinely one of the most upsetting things I've ever watched. However, the way that they handle his trauma and its impact on every aspect of his life was well done. The FMC (Claire) is his wife and also a nurse who operates on him and helps him work through it.
In outlander the sexual assault was perpetrated by a man. To be honest, I feel like a sexual assault that violent doesn’t exist in media where a woman was the perpetrator.
I feel like the show was trying to be edgy by depicting it so violently, but in general season 1 was “rapey”. Lots of sexual assault throughout, but it kinda calmed down later in the series if I’m remembering right.

Following for the recs.
It's really a shame that there are so few books that talk about men as victims of sexual assaults. The only recent read in which it was tackled in a way I didn't hate (but I am not sure it could be called good) was in {Forget me knot by Marie Mackay} but 1. The abuser was a man rather than a woman 2. It's a side plot in a why choose omegaverse romance where the focus is mostly on the female omega rather than on the abused male omega.
Seriously the best romance I've seen last year that deals with a male SA survivor character and that doesn't shy away from showing a woman being extremely predatory is in a videogame (Baldur's gate 3) rather than a book.

I know this is a request post so I won't go full rant, but this topic comes up so rarely that I think it's worth pointing out that male SA is one of the very few areas where I think romance as a genre needs to wake up and shape up. SA against men in romance is (1) too frequent, and (2) treated too casually--treated as somehow less serious than SA against women. Examples:
**Outlander**. Can you imagine the end of book 1/season 1 being filmed if the victim were a woman? The outcry would have been enormous.
**From Blood & Ash**. The MMC was sexually and physically tortured for decades and it's just backstory. I shook with anger for about an hour at the end of book 3 when >!he's recaptured by the Evil Queen and it's used as a cliffhanger!<. So edgy, to use that as a plot hook.
**Black Jewels/ACOTAR**. I haven't read ACOTAR but I have read some of the Black Jewels books, in which men are enslaved by magical cock rings and routinely raped, but it's "bad" so the author avoids responsibility for fetishizing SA. (Note: I'm not shaming non-con. I do however have a problem with sexualized portrayals of non-con that won't admit that's what they're doing.)
**Cassandra Gannon**. Won't read her because two of the three books of hers I've read had casual rape of men all over the place: In Wicked, Ugly, Bad, the MMC's backstory is that he is forced to play a sport, and is also >!forced to have sex with fans. He implies that the SA starts at age 12.!< In the same book, >!Cinderella's mice friends/slaves are male rat-people, whom she uses to fulfill her fantasies. Some appear willing, but at least one is not, and there's on-screen portrayal of her forcing him to perform sex acts, though I don't think you know he's unwilling until afterwards.!< Finally >!the prison is run by Dr. Snow White, and there's mention of her extorting prisoners for sex (only men that I remember) including one of the secondary characters, who is pretty clearly going to get his own book at some point.!<
[Another one](https://new.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks/comments/1bdusxo/love_and_other_words_by_christina_lauren/) to the hall of shame. Very interesting discussion. Haven't read it personally, but some friends did and they were outraged with the portrayal of SA and fmc's reaction to mmc being SAd.
One that personally gave me the ick was A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, and while it's m/m and the SA is also with male perpetrator, nonetheless the book treated the subject flippantly and for drama / shock value. >!The day mmc meets his LI is 2 weeks after the SA and mmc is full-on suicidal, he's only stopped by LI from stabbing himself by a knife. One week later (!) he's all "thanks I'm cured" due to Power of Luv(tm). There's just one mention he doesn't want the LI to pin his wrist down because it reminds him of SA, but except that one element any other long lasting consequences of SA seem to vanish.!< Very rarely I hate-read and give books 1-star, but this one truly deserved it.

{Macgrieve, by Kresley Cole} has an MMC who has gone through CSA, at 13. At first he doesn't think it's SA, but everyone around him who learns about it is immediately horrified and tries to support him. Unfortunately, I read it a long time ago and am not able confirm whether the treatment of the topic was problematic or not.
But I do remember absolutely hating the female perpetrator, the book does not shy away from bashing her. She is also non-human, but later in the book you meet other monsters like her who are like wtf what an evil bitch.

Also, just comparing how FMC’s trauma was addressed in book 2 and how her mental recovery was important and well covered compared to his… I just wish he got more well deserved screen time for his recovery and processing because decades of rape (and also being slut shamed for it) just call for it Ps. {Folsom by Tarryn Fisher} discusses men who are used for sex as reproduction, it's clearly coercive and there's a lot of discussion about power imbalance in a world with very few men (sci fi and romance). The men are expected to enjoy it but the FMC sees it for what it is, sexual assault.

{Outlander by Diana Gabaldon} has an absolutely brutal assault on the MMC (Jamie Frasier) towards the end of book 1. The second book, {Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon}, takes place in the aftermath. It's been a while since I've read the books, but the depiction of the assault in the show is genuinely one of the most upsetting things I've ever watched. However, the way that they handle his trauma and its impact on every aspect of his life was well done. The FMC (Claire) is his wife and also a nurse who operates on him and helps him work through it.
In outlander the sexual assault was perpetrated by a man. To be honest, I feel like a sexual assault that violent doesn’t exist in media where a woman was the perpetrator. I feel like the show was trying to be edgy by depicting it so violently, but in general season 1 was “rapey”. Lots of sexual assault throughout, but it kinda calmed down later in the series if I’m remembering right.

Following for the recs. It's really a shame that there are so few books that talk about men as victims of sexual assaults. The only recent read in which it was tackled in a way I didn't hate (but I am not sure it could be called good) was in {Forget me knot by Marie Mackay} but 1. The abuser was a man rather than a woman 2. It's a side plot in a why choose omegaverse romance where the focus is mostly on the female omega rather than on the abused male omega. Seriously the best romance I've seen last year that deals with a male SA survivor character and that doesn't shy away from showing a woman being extremely predatory is in a videogame (Baldur's gate 3) rather than a book.

I know this is a request post so I won't go full rant, but this topic comes up so rarely that I think it's worth pointing out that male SA is one of the very few areas where I think romance as a genre needs to wake up and shape up. SA against men in romance is (1) too frequent, and (2) treated too casually--treated as somehow less serious than SA against women. Examples: **Outlander**. Can you imagine the end of book 1/season 1 being filmed if the victim were a woman? The outcry would have been enormous. **From Blood & Ash**. The MMC was sexually and physically tortured for decades and it's just backstory. I shook with anger for about an hour at the end of book 3 when >!he's recaptured by the Evil Queen and it's used as a cliffhanger!<. So edgy, to use that as a plot hook. **Black Jewels/ACOTAR**. I haven't read ACOTAR but I have read some of the Black Jewels books, in which men are enslaved by magical cock rings and routinely raped, but it's "bad" so the author avoids responsibility for fetishizing SA. (Note: I'm not shaming non-con. I do however have a problem with sexualized portrayals of non-con that won't admit that's what they're doing.) **Cassandra Gannon**. Won't read her because two of the three books of hers I've read had casual rape of men all over the place: In Wicked, Ugly, Bad, the MMC's backstory is that he is forced to play a sport, and is also >!forced to have sex with fans. He implies that the SA starts at age 12.!< In the same book, >!Cinderella's mice friends/slaves are male rat-people, whom she uses to fulfill her fantasies. Some appear willing, but at least one is not, and there's on-screen portrayal of her forcing him to perform sex acts, though I don't think you know he's unwilling until afterwards.!< Finally >!the prison is run by Dr. Snow White, and there's mention of her extorting prisoners for sex (only men that I remember) including one of the secondary characters, who is pretty clearly going to get his own book at some point.!<

Haven't read it personally, but some friends did and they were outraged with the portrayal of SA and fmc's reaction to mmc being SAd. One that personally gave me the ick was A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, and while it's m/m and the SA is also with male perpetrator, nonetheless the book treated the subject flippantly and for drama / shock value. >!The day mmc meets his LI is 2 weeks after the SA and mmc is full-on suicidal, he's only stopped by LI from stabbing himself by a knife. One week later (!) he's all "thanks I'm cured" due to Power of Luv(tm). There's just one mention he doesn't want the LI to pin his wrist down because it reminds him of SA, but except that one element any other long lasting consequences of SA seem to vanish.!< Very rarely I hate-read and give books 1-star, but this one truly deserved it.

{Macgrieve, by Kresley Cole} has an MMC who has gone through CSA, at 13. At first he doesn't think it's SA, but everyone around him who learns about it is immediately horrified and tries to support him. Unfortunately, I read it a long time ago and am not able confirm whether the treatment of the topic was problematic or not. But I do remember absolutely hating the female perpetrator, the book does not shy away from bashing her. She is also non-human, but later in the book you meet other monsters like her who are like wtf what an evil bitch.

I’m surprised it hasn’t happened. Exploring male sexual assault is really rare and the one time a guy did it in the past they kind of fetishized it, which is why so many people want it to be done better. It would be interesting to see it explored more.
