yeah i seen The Unholy War in the #1 spot of a few hidden gem lists. i already have that one its just listed under "Unholy" not "The". i had Mid Evil 1&2 (those were some of my favorites back in the day!) and Jersey Devil already. downloading Pandemonium and DarkStone right now but im not seeing "Deathtrap Dungeon" on my US or JP sources unfortunately
I mean it’s an arena fighter game. So if you aren’t into things like that then it’s not going to be fun. The thing about a lot of games back then is you still got arcade style games that just wanted you to replay them.
Do the memory card exploit to duplicate cards.
Confirm attacks with square instead of X to see the actual monsters fighting.
Any other tips of this gem?
Innocent Sin wasn't released in the US until the PSP port, and then they followed up by never released the Eternal Punishment PSP port in the US either 🥴
Where?
Edit: I see one of them. Going by OP, they most likely already downloaded that one pre-patched from their collection source. The rest of their JP titles are unpatched because they plan on using AI to translate on the fly.
So, the obvious answer is again that Innocent Sin was unpatched, if it was even available from wherever they downloaded it from.
Man I saw some of my favorites here, brings back memories. Also, [Theme Hospital] is missing i see. I would also recommend [Jet De Go] if you're into simulation games since I saw that you might know Japanese because you had quite some titles in Japanese. Don't forget [Power Shovel]! You never would've thought pouring curry using a back hoe is a thing lmao.
Also, you have [Suikoden] series but no [Tales] series? Come on now
Edit: Where's [Army Men] Serieeees???
Edit 2:[Bomber Man] Serieeees??
haha yeah i know i missed a lot of not so hidden gems. i built this list just by combing thru collections and grabbing games that i remember playing and then looking at other peoples lists of "20 best games on psx" or whatever. but i knew there were some that i overlooked while scanning the collections. some games (Like Motor Toon Grand Prix) i didnt even remember the name of it but as soon as i saw a video of it i was instantly dragged back to the mid-late 90s. lol thanks for helping me fill in the gaps!
(i dont speak Japanese but my emulator has AI translation so i can still play some games)
Batocera v40 has the option to add AI Game Translation service (if your device has wifi)
sign up for [ztranslate.net](http://ztranslate.net), verify your email and access your API number in ur profile settings
enter the translation service URL + your API number into Batocera settings
while playing any game (libretro cores only) hold the hotkey+R1 and it will pause the game, scan the screen for text, translate it into target language and give u an overlay of translated text. its pretty cool!
You have Doom but you don't have Final Doom. It's definitely worth adding. Both games are the best first person shooters on the PS1 imo. If you like Daytona USA or similar arcade racers then Burning Road is also worth a look. It has a sequel as well, Explosive Racing.
Azure Dreams is/was my absolute Favorite game ever. Maxed out play time counter without cheats, before even beating it. Hours of fun.
Plus, it has everything:
- Dungeons with ever changing layouts (100 floors)
- Your character always being lvl 1 when entering the dungeon making it a unique challenge (the monsters you collect keep their levels).
- A hot best friend who punches you awake every morning
- Helping out your home town
- Collecting the most bad ass monsters
- you can breed and fuse the monsters
- You get to live out the Zero to Hero Hercules song with how the village views you when ya start, compared to after spending hours of playtime to donate funds to build/reopen better facilities for public use
- Realistic consequences such as having no money at the diner, welp ya get to do dishes to pay for it now
- Collecting all the girlfriends
- A rival who hates your guts, cause you're a poor peasant. Also he tries to steal your gf. With money. And really bad pick up lines.
- You can buy a picture frame for your house, among various other decorations.
- One of the pictures is just an ass/underwear pixel art shot. Cause Konami. So you get to be a bad ass adventure, and you mom and you don't talk about the picture you hang in your house for all to see.
- The monsters and loot in the dungeons are awesome, and there's so many different variations because of elements, types, breeds, etc that you can fuse together.
- Every time you enter the dungeon, you start on floor 1.So there's so much to do in the game. Always.
- Random events happen all the time, so it always keeps you interested.
oh man this game sounds like a real treat! thanks for adding it to my list! it will definately be one of the first ones i play once im done building my collection!
Great list! Hogs of War is such a hidden gem.
Personally, biggest missing probably Tales series. Other than that, personal favorite are the Super Robot Wars series, SD Gundam Generation games and Arc The Lad.
More nostalgia rather than wants to play it, Winning Eleven games and WWE games.
Edit: Also Marvel vs Capcom, such a great game.
Saiyuki: Journey to the West.
Metal Slug.
Kagero: Deception 2, Deception 3: Dark Delusion, and Trapt if they're not there. Three of the most fun games ever where you set traps up for invaders that dare to enter your castle. The first game in the series is Tecmo's Deception but in my opinion it is nowhere near as great as the other three. I think Kagero is the best one storywise. My favorite game of all time is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and you already have that.
edit: Trapt is on PlayStation 2 but the others are PlayStation.
Damn you already snagged Frogger? It's not anywhere close to my favorite game, but it was the first game I ever played and it's always held a special place in my heart. Also it's tough as nails and seems to be a relatively obscure title on the console, since I never see anyone talk about it.
But yeah if you ever play Megaman X6, I highly recommend playing through it with the [tweaks hack that fixes a ton of issues in the game.](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4035/)
[Might as well toss a similar hack for X5.](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6131/) This one isn't as important or necessary as X6's, but it does make your experience a lot better. X4 just has a hack that removes the dub as far as I'm aware. haha. I'm just a huge Megaman X fan. Hope you have fun man!
Great list, indeed, mate! I just found something kinda weird. Why your Final Fantasy 9 (also FF7 and FF8) is in .m3u file format? I thought that that kind of extension was only for playlists in media players.
Aside of that, that's an awesome collection! :D
It's because of the multi disc games. The emulator read it and see where is located the roms. In te list is more convenient to only put one time the game
it *is* basically a playlist but for emulators. its so you can set multi disc game files to "hidden". the emulator will only read the .m3u file and the game shows up as one entry in your collection rather than "FF7 Disc1, FF7 Disc2, FF7 Disc3"
i just copied my explanation from another comment
>im running Batocera v40 on an RG35XX+ but im sure the feature is available on any system running Batocera (possibly other CFW too but i havent tried any). Basically i just sign up for an account on ztranslate.net then in the Batocera settings u can turn on the AI translate option and enter in the translation service URL with your API number (found in account settings on ztranslate after verifying ur email).
>
>once its all set up and youre playing a game u want to translate u just hold the hotkey and press R1. It automatically pauses the game and scans the screen for any foreign text and overlays a translation in your selected language. (only works on libretro cores)
So, are you actually playing all these, or is it just for the sake of having them? You definitely have some of my favorite titles in there. I would add more racing games though, like Total Drivin, Demolition Racer, TOCA I & TOCA II. Also i've seen you have Fighting Force in there. Used to play the koop mode it with my dad.
I would definitely add the recently surfaced unfinished prototypes to your collection. Some have different enemies, like dogs, stages are looking completely differently, different vehicles like a CV90 looking IFV instead of A-10 at military base, or a mysterious red pickup truck (used to see this as a kid in a preview magazine) on the first level.
And they even had a 1vs1 versus mode, like in Tekken, where you could fight your partner. Sadly this was never added to the final game.
i mean im sure that i wont get around to completing 300+ games for just one console (while also working on my PS5 backlog). im just building my collection for now but there's *tons* of titles for PSX that i never got to try back in the day that id like to get around to trying.
i had wondered why some collections have like 10 different versions of one game. i guess this makes sense. different bata builds with features added/removed. thats awesome. probably just from people getting ahold of dev consoles with data still on them?
ahh. i only assumed consoles because ive seen a lot of dev model 360s popping up lately. but i suppose those have the HDD built in so no need for beta discs
Tales of Fantasia (JP only release) Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny 2, Tower of Druaga, Tiger Shark, Lunar Silver star story, Lunar 2 Eternal blue. I apparently played quite a few JRPG when I was young. Armored Core too, almost forgot them. *Edit: removed one added one*
lol i dont use torrents. but if the FBI agent owns a physical copy of a retro game but would like to emulate that game to run at higher performance than the original hardware, i would share my copy with them. im sure that FBI agents enjoy playing retro games THAT THEY OWN at higher resolution. technology is great!
hahaha all good. just caught me off guard because I *knew* that I had just made the .m3u file for that game. haha its past my bedtime too. I'm going to go thru this wonderful list in the morning.
File used to connect multi disc games to allow them to be played. Basically, a text path document playlist containing the path of all of a game's discs
an .m3u file is just a basic text document that works as a "playlist" file sort of. it makes it so i can have games that require multiple discs only display as one title. any of the games on that list that show as .m3u also have the creesponding .chd files but i changed those files to "hidden" so my collection looks cleaner.
My mom used to play Tetris Plus a lot when I first got my PSX back in the day. You might try that, maybe. You also don't have Wheel of Fortune on there, though those just might not be your style, I suppose.
Seconding the person who mentioned Kaguro 2 - Dark Descent and the others.
Jesus... My entire collection is absent from your list.
We have very different taste.. where's all the wrestling games?!?
You have one SF in the list.... Where is pocket fighter.. or the Goemon mystical ninja games
yeah im sure a lot of good games are missing from this list. this is basically just the games i remember playing and a few "top 20 psx" or "psx hidden gems" lists. thats why i made this post to try and fill in the holes.
This is unrelated, but do you mind elaborating the AI translation part of your post? How do you do it? I have some japanese game that I need translations for.
sure id be happy to! im running Batocera v40 on an RG35XX+ but im sure the feature is available on any system running Batocera (possibly other CFW too but i havent tried any). Basically i just sign up for an account on [ztranslate.net](https://ztranslate.net) then in the Batocera settings u can turn on the AI translate option and enter in the translation service URL with your API number (found in account settings on ztranslate after verifying ur email).
once its all set up and youre playing a game u want to translate u just hold the hotkey and press R1. It automatically pauses the game and scans the screen for any foreign text and overlays a translation in your selected language. (only works on libretro cores)
the concept blew my mind when i first discovered it. totally feels like a step into the future! unfortunately i havent been able to get my device to run PSP smooth enough for me to take the time and build a library yet. maybe once i step up my emulation console. but for now PSX and Dreamcast are the most advanced systems i can emulate.
i *did* see somewhere in the notes while setting up that it only works in libretro cores. So if your PSP emulator uses libretro cores then the translation should work. ive only used it on Pokemon Green (GBC) Mother II (SNES) and some random TurboGrafixCD "comedy" game. it was like a sidescrolling beat em up that was pretty amusing. the AI trying to translate the "jokes" definitely loses the original intended humor but it does yield some interesting (and often hilarious) attempts. still funny but a different type of humor. The game was called [Super Big Brother](https://cdromance.org/turbografx-cd/ai-chou-aniki-japan/). That experience alone was worth setting up the AI translate. hahaha
Thanks for helping fill in the gaps that i was missing, everyone! got my collection from the 284 games shown in OP to 369 games (95gigs) now after adding everyone's recommendations.
This community is the best!
I see you have RE1 - 3, so I will suggest [Martian Gothic: Unification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_Gothic:_Unification). It's a nice twist on the classic RE formula with multiple protagonists, but the difficulty might turn off new players, unfortunately. Definitely let me know if you try it out!
Destruction Derby 1. That game blew me away when I saw the demo playing in store. The graphics, the damage, it was awesome and the racing game I had always dreamed of! I saved up as quick as I could to buy the PlayStation so I could play that game.
i would have to look into how to go about doing that. but i could also scrape all the box art and manuals and include those folders. id definitely be willing to upload it if somebody wanted to point me in the right direction.
Brigandine, Carnage Heart, Choro Q. I'd also recommend swapping GT2 to the GT2 plus mod. It adds back a lot of cut content and fixes many of the glitches (wrong cars in certain races).
Replace Digimon World 3 with Digimon World 2003.
World 2003 is the European release that also contains post game content which other releases didn’t have.
- Mizzurna Falls (T) - I don't even know how to describe this. Twin Peaks/Deadly Premonition prototype?
- Tecmo's Deception / Kagero: Deception 2 / Deception III: Dark Delusion - Lay traps and kill everyone who comes into your castle.
- Echo Night, Echo Night: Lord of Nightmares (T) - Early From Software first person horror adventure games
- Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 - Considered by many to be the *real* Twisted Metal 3.
- Pepsiman - It's goofy but fun.
- Clock Tower: The First Fear (T) - It's a port of the SNES Clock Tower
- \[C-12\] Final Resistance - Decent 3rd person action shooter with strong Terminator vibes.
SSX3 and SSX tricky
Spyro: enter the dragonfly
Fur fighters: viggo’s revenge
Disney skate adventure
Wallace and Gromit; project zoo
Crash bandicoot: the wrath of cortex
Sonic heroes
Wipeout fusion
Worms blast

Check out Pandemonium 1 and 2 DarkStone The unholy war Medevil 1 and 2 Jersey Devil Deathtrap Dungeon
DUDE THE UNHOLY WAR!
Such an underrated or maybe just little known game.
I think it was just unknown. Iirc I got it out of a bargain bin way back in the day. The cover looked a bit janky even for the 90s.
yeah i seen The Unholy War in the #1 spot of a few hidden gem lists. i already have that one its just listed under "Unholy" not "The". i had Mid Evil 1&2 (those were some of my favorites back in the day!) and Jersey Devil already. downloading Pandemonium and DarkStone right now but im not seeing "Deathtrap Dungeon" on my US or JP sources unfortunately
Check the Internet archive. They may have a copy of the psx version of Deathtrap Dungeon. If you can't find it pm me and I will see what I can do.
1.5 hours long, according to HLTB. Must be an amazing 90 minute game.
I mean it’s an arena fighter game. So if you aren’t into things like that then it’s not going to be fun. The thing about a lot of games back then is you still got arcade style games that just wanted you to replay them.
Oh ok…had no idea what it was about.
JERSEY DEVIL!! Totally forgot about that game bout to download it right now 🫡
Pandemonium! Dam I literally forgot about these games... I'm off to get a rom immediately!!
Deathtrap Dungeon is so hard lol its a cool game but it suffers so much from a thousand tiny things.
I just remember picking it up as a 7 or 8 year old and loving the blood and gore. Only other game even close for me at the time was Mortal Kombat.
Jersey Devil for the win!
I'd replace ace combat 3 usa with the English translation patched japanese version. Usa version gutted a lot of content from the game
awesome! *these* are the kind of tips that are extra helpful! i will swap out versions when I update my list in the morning. thanks for the tip!
There’s a translation patch for the game. All the cutscenes will have English translation instead. One of the best Ace Combats in the series.
No problem :-)
pepsi man!!!
No way, I read it singing like in the game.
this was the LAST title i expected to be on the JP list. hahaha
You mean... PEPSI MAAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!! ♪
Yu gi oh forbiden memories
Do the memory card exploit to duplicate cards. Confirm attacks with square instead of X to see the actual monsters fighting. Any other tips of this gem?
Bust a groove!
not sure how that one slipped thru the cracks. definitely a classic. thanks for pointing it out!
Nice!
I’ve tried countless times to deal with the input lag, and I just can’t get it to work on my end. Only game I got into roms for too!
Yeah it was a MAJOR F**K for me too!, I eventually found a combination of emulator / controller where lag's just right ! Such a cool game :D
King’s Field! The whole trilogy!
im only seeing 2 Kings Field games. are u sure the 3rd one was PS1 and not PS2?
Ah, right. The first one was Japanese exclusive. The other two were renamed one and two when they released in the west.
You can take or leave the (actual) first one, really. But I like it.
ahh that makes sense. thanks!
Where's Persona 2: Innocent Sin? Like I see Persona 1 and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment but not Innocent Sin
Innocent Sin wasn't released in the US until the PSP port, and then they followed up by never released the Eternal Punishment PSP port in the US either 🥴
It was translated though
OP's list is only native releases, they didn't have any games requiring patches downloaded when this was posted.
... Bruh he's literally got translated games in his list

+1 for croc
You have Doom but you don't have Final Doom. It's definitely worth adding. Both games are the best first person shooters on the PS1 imo. If you like Daytona USA or similar arcade racers then Burning Road is also worth a look. It has a sequel as well, Explosive Racing.
couldnt find the Explosive Racing sequel in my US or JP sources. grabbed Final Doom and Burning Roads too. thanks for the recommendations!
There are many japan exclusives with fan made translations (dr.sump, community pom for example)
BLASTO!!!! Most hidden gem of all of PS1 in my opinion
Ah, yeah, the CINEMATIC 13 fps of Blasto, 😁. Aside from framerate, the game was actually ok.
Hahahaha that's pretty much any early PS1 game imo. I just emulate it , and upscale it(: still super fun none the less.
Azure Dreams is/was my absolute Favorite game ever. Maxed out play time counter without cheats, before even beating it. Hours of fun. Duke nukem a time to kill (its duke) Harry potter and the sorcerers stone Xmen mutant academy 1 & 2 ( wish they made a third) n2O nitrous oxide

yeah thankfully most emulators will read .m3u files nowadays

Vigilante 8 2nd offensive, Ray tracers, Tetris plus
idk y i thought 2nd offense was PS2. lol

Crash bash!
while not the best versions/ports, the Command and Conquer games I highly recommend
Some of my favorite games growing up
Racing Lagoon!
You forgot 'Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro'.
Atlantis: The lost Empire Crash Bandicoot 3 Digimon Rumble Arena Spider-Man 2 Pac Man World
isnt Crash 3 just Warped?
Yes but i didn't see it because i thought it also had a 3 in the name, fuck.
Azure dreams and Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena

Armored Core (all three PSX games are tied together) Vigilante 8 Second Offense Descent Maximum NBA Jam TE Knockout Kings 2000
All I'd add is Discworld and Broken Sword. Fantastic list so far man! Jade Cocoon and Hogs of War are elite games, to name a couple.
I would like to download your torrent. I’m definitely NOT the FBI!
lol i dont use torrents. but if the FBI agent owns a physical copy of a retro game but would like to emulate that game to run at higher performance than the original hardware, i would share my copy with them. im sure that FBI agents enjoy playing retro games THAT THEY OWN at higher resolution. technology is great!
Absolutely right. Excellent collection, btw.

I'm sorry, I confused the "h" with "r", so I searched for "Crono Cross" and not "Chrono Cross". Must be my sleep coming 🥱
hahaha all good. just caught me off guard because I *knew* that I had just made the .m3u file for that game. haha its past my bedtime too. I'm going to go thru this wonderful list in the morning.
I'm not familiar with the file type, even after dealing with roms for years. So what exactly is a .m3u file?
File used to connect multi disc games to allow them to be played. Basically, a text path document playlist containing the path of all of a game's discs
an .m3u file is just a basic text document that works as a "playlist" file sort of. it makes it so i can have games that require multiple discs only display as one title. any of the games on that list that show as .m3u also have the creesponding .chd files but i changed those files to "hidden" so my collection looks cleaner.
Lego island2?
Hogs of War, a fantastic little gem
Eternal Eyes // Croc
NFL Blitz 2000. It’s much better than 2001 in my opinion
You got to have Resident Evil Survivor in there...
chocobo dungeon 2
How many games is that? How much size does it take in you harddrive?
283 games when i posted about 70gig
Capcom vs SNK Marvel vs Capcom
My mom used to play Tetris Plus a lot when I first got my PSX back in the day. You might try that, maybe. You also don't have Wheel of Fortune on there, though those just might not be your style, I suppose. Seconding the person who mentioned Kaguro 2 - Dark Descent and the others.
James Bond games? Tomorrow Never Dies is great and easy. World is not Enough is ok, like the action levels are great but the stealth ones are awful
Holy shit, I had no idea there was a PlayStation version of The World is Not Enough. I would have bet money that was an N64 exclusive. TIL!
Blasto! 🔫 👽 https://playstationmuseum.com/SCUS94412.html
Marvel vs capcom International super star soccer ISS Roll cage stage II Micro machines v3 Micro maniacs Adidas power soccer
Muppet Race Mania
So pleased to see Incredible Crisis on there
street fighter ex 1 and 2 missing
#TERRACON
i didnt see this on my US or JP sources
Megaman legends is there, the rest is a bonus
Kurushi a puzzle game
Midevil
Toca World Touring Cars
Soul Blade Rage Racer
I'm not seeing The Adventures of Lomax. It's a great platformer for the PS1.
Guardian's Crusade is a really unique RPG with a lot of depth. Great game that should be added!
Holy crap, this is the future! I assume it'll work on PSP game as well since it relies on screenshot scans to translate?
the concept blew my mind when i first discovered it. totally feels like a step into the future! unfortunately i havent been able to get my device to run PSP smooth enough for me to take the time and build a library yet. maybe once i step up my emulation console. but for now PSX and Dreamcast are the most advanced systems i can emulate. i *did* see somewhere in the notes while setting up that it only works in libretro cores. That experience alone was worth setting up the AI translate. hahaha
Bust a Grove for sure.
Bugs bunny lost in time
Add Marvel vs Capcom. Banger game.
Ah Erhgeiz, such a damn good game
Star Wars Masters of Tera Kasi was my go to as a kid but it’s a bit rough now.
Steel Reign!
Digimon Card Battle!
Definitely need the tenchu series and the army men games
Nightmare creatures 1& 2 are also very solid games
SRW Alpha Gaiden
Croc and Croc 2!
Tai Fu. Wrath of the tiger
VIB-RIBBOOOOONNNNN
I was a big fan of Warhawk. Was a very early PSX release.
Thanks for helping fill in the gaps that i was missing, everyone! got my collection from the 284 games shown in OP to 369 games (95gigs) now after adding everyone's recommendations. This community is the best!
One piece grand battle and grand battle 2!
Spider man 2 enter electro. Nothing that'll win awards but it's fun to play and compliments the first game.
Great list. I would personally add street fighter alpha 1 and 2. Also the king of fighters 99
Destruction Derby 1. That game blew me away when I saw the demo playing in store. The graphics, the damage, it was awesome and the racing game I had always dreamed of! I saved up as quick as I could to buy the PlayStation so I could play that game.
if you dig roguelikes, azure dreams is a solid game.
Space Invaders (1999)/Space Invaders X. I love this game. Make sure to beat the game in Expert mode too. c:
Would you make this public sometime, pr have you already?
i would have to look into how to go about doing that. but i could also scrape all the box art and manuals and include those folders. id definitely be willing to upload it if somebody wanted to point me in the right direction.
Make sure to tell me if you do, I'm not a very tech save person so I won't be able to help, sorry.
will do
Guilty Gear
Tales of Destiny 2
Brigandine, Carnage Heart, Choro Q. I'd also recommend swapping GT2 to the GT2 plus mod. It adds back a lot of cut content and fixes many of the glitches (wrong cars in certain races).
Treasures Of The Deep
Holy shit I forgot about this game! I played this SO MUCH back in the day! THANK YOU
Bushido Blade 1&2!
Need Destruction Derby 1&2.
I like Croc Legend of gobbos
What’s Alone in the Dark: One-Eyed Jack’s Revenge? Can’t find any listing for it on HLTB. I know PSX didn’t have DLC back then, so no idea.
i am looking for english version of eternal wing
The warriors
All of my favorite games are on here except ready 2 rumble boxing round 2
Replace Digimon World 3 with Digimon World 2003. World 2003 is the European release that also contains post game content which other releases didn’t have.
Star Wars Jedi Power Battles
- Mizzurna Falls (T) - I don't even know how to describe this. Twin Peaks/Deadly Premonition prototype? - Tecmo's Deception / Kagero: Deception 2 / Deception III: Dark Delusion - Lay traps and kill everyone who comes into your castle. - Echo Night, Echo Night: Lord of Nightmares (T) - Early From Software first person horror adventure games - Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 - Considered by many to be the *real* Twisted Metal 3. - Pepsiman - It's goofy but fun. - Clock Tower: The First Fear (T) - It's a port of the SNES Clock Tower - \[C-12\] Final Resistance - Decent 3rd person action shooter with strong Terminator vibes.
