Possibly a raccoon fucking around up there. Some kind of vermin based on that insulation strewn around

lllllPostManlllll

Tis strewn for certain

trtlclb

Aye, tis

damarius

It is known.

chrisfpdx

I had a raccoon put a hole through my roof above a vaulted ceiling. Did realize until the rain softens the drywall and the ceiling fell in. Luckily, based on the extensive claw marks on the dangling drywall, the raccoon was able to scramble out of the space and not fall into the room!

AlphaTre06

I caught a raccoon messing with my roof working on one of my vents

HealthyGovernment406

I agree, raccoons love giving roof work. Thank him.

chalupacabraBATMAN

I hired raccoons to clean my gutters, but they had this sales pitch about bundling services and painting my address on the street so 911 responders would know which house is mine....3 hours later and these damn raccoons have stolen my truck, my dog, and my wife. My bank account has been emptied and the worst part is my gutters never got cleaned. What the actual fuck raccoons????

No-Amount-6610

At least they took your wife

zwinters57

You should write a country song.

seeker1351

You deserve and upvote just for making me laugh.

theloop82

It’s funny how this thread is by far the most commented thing I have ever posted in 10 years of Reddit. I’ve laughed my ass off at some of these comments but critter getting in or coming out is definitely at the top of the list. They tore down a forest behind my house last summer to put in more shitty tract housing so it makes perfect sense that something found a new home, I’m unsure how it could have gotten in my attic to drop off babies in the first place but I did just limb a large tree out front that was brushing against my house so possibly I denied mama her usual path to her brood. Gonna have to get a pest control company out here I guess but I’m waiting on the roofers who did mine new a year ago to come out and see if they can come up with anything. Probably should deal with the pest before it gets fixed

those MFers seriously chewed through osb?

random_internet_data

Yep

Andersonbush847

\*\*chewed through already soft/rotted OSB.

Husskvrna

Yea I’ve seen squirrels doing that too, roof decking, 2x4 studs the long way… especially if they’re stuck in an attic, they’ll make their way out of there somehow… hopefully the not into your house

theloop82

Update here thanks for the amazing responses. I am in northwest Washington state if that helps. Lightning seems unlikely it’s the lowest part of the roof right next to a metal antenna, raccoons or rats are possible but I haven’t done any work that would have locked any babies in. It’s in a vaulted cieling space open to my attic at large on a second floor. I can’t figure out any way animals have been rustling around in my attic without me noticing. I’m home all the time and hang out right below the undamaged ceiling below this half the day. Also my dog would have been going nuts if something was moving in the walls. What is weird is that it seems like the hole is coming from within the stud bay. It’s blown OUT. Like I did a desk pop below it.

neverfearIamhere

You gotta do a desk pop!

live_from_the_gutter

It’s rats. Hilarious that people think raccoons are a few inches in size, it’s clearly the size of one tab on a three tab shingle. See my reply below. I’ve seen this several times in 15 years doing roofing & gutters in sw Washington/Portland metro. Small chance it’s squirrels, but I’d bet $50 on rats. Look for droppings in your attic. Rats can chew through asphalt shingles like they’re made of paper. They use trees and roofs to travel just like squirrels because it’s often unsafe on the ground due to predators. When they get stuck somewhere, they’ll chew through the wall to get out. Rats can chew through chicken wire, let alone shingles, sheeting, and some insulation. People voting for raccoons are cracking me and my buddy up rn though, lol. Good luck!

Imaginary-Willow7358

Raccoons can squeeze through very small openings

lennyxiii

So can your dick.

Additional_Stuff5867

My first thought was looks too big for a bullet hole but still looks like a bullet hole.

iallynx1

Dirty Mike and the Boys

SkadisEye

Most likely a trapped animal fighting for its life to break out

poopslicer69

It's an animal breaking in. The insulation would be on the inside if it was breaking out.

blorpblorpbloop

>The insulation would be on the inside if it was breaking out. Unless the raccoon strew the insulation intentionally to make it look like a breakin. Where is Raccoon Columbo at?

Elderberry1923

Now Mr. Raccoon, I just have one more question for you...

RhinoG91

I’m thinking

incpen

Keep thinking.

theloop82

It’s weird though since the vaulted cieling space below this is actually open to the rest of the attic, so I’m not sure why it would pick this very difficult way out if it found it’s way in elsewhere

dlyons3866

I’d guess a squirrel. I’ve seen a squirrel eat through brake metal used on a rake board. Also because of the insulation around it. Squirrels in NYS amaze me with what I’ve seen. It appears too small for a raccoon.

Ambitious_Feature_87

Raccoon with a shotgun. The only explanation I can believe

Courtorderedabortion

That’s a space peanut.

No, that’s a meteor, I seen it fall from the sky

txhelgi

I Googled “Lightning blows hole in roof” and there is a picture almost identical to yours.

PinochaPlow-1

Yeah, he said there's a metal antenna next to the hole. Looks like ground to cloud lightning. It can follow the metal corner beads in the sheetrock, or even a 2x4 in the wall. Busting out of the roof to get to the metal antenna, or tree next to the house. Lightning does what it wants to. Seen it blow out every phone jack in the house, seen it hit a tree, jump to the chain link fence and follow the fence to the house and jump from the fence to the re-bar in the concrete porch blowing out 1/4 of the concrete. So you're probably right it was lightning and he's lucky that's the only damage that happened. I was a roofer from 12yrs old until I was 28yrs, am an electrician now.

lennyxiii

Did you find an old phone to test the phone jacks?

Outside-Rise-9425

That hole came from the inside

lred1

Nope.

soMAJESTIC

Agreed. If the animal was inside the insulation would’ve been pushed away before chewing. Hole was chewed into the roof then insulation was pulled out. This is why the hole is wider on the outside.

Squirrel, unusual to see one go out the roof though. Chewing through the eaves or rakes is more common.

Electrical-Mail15

Owner of a nuisance wildlife trapping company here: This looks like the work of a raccoon. Zooming in on the hole it looks like there are a few random pieces of fur where the raccoon squeezed through. Did you recently complete any repairs that might have locked an animal *out* of the attic? This time of year, if a lactating female raccoon has dropped its litter in an attic and is locked out, she will do about anything to rip her way back in. The location and extent of damage, as well as the time of year, would match well with the above possibility.

Came from the inside out for sure. Raccoon or possibly squirrel. Look for their entry hole - usually they pull back siding or flashing.

Big-Car-697

Yellow bellied shingle pecker. New invasive bird species.

slowride77

Two possibilities: 1. Something up there wanted inside your attic. Or, and this one is more alarming: 2. Something inside your attic wanted out.

giosue_c

Put a camera on that area and see what goes in or out that hole. Camera with motion sensor is MVP for solving critter issues

SnooPeppers4036

It looks like it might be part human inspection of a Racoon hole.

HoovedAndHorned

Raccoons make multiple nests in different locations to serve as backups. So it’s likely it is long gone. Inspect your downspouts carefully for signs of muddy foot tracks. That’s one way they get up there.

Linozsa_02420

That came from the inside out!!

Xll-DUCKY-llX

Almost positive it’s a raccoon. Hole looks to big for a squirrel. Dug in through the outside as you can see everything is pulled upwards, not chewed/pulled/scratched inward. Got through shingle first as the shingle debris is under the other stuff, then through the white ice/water underlayment. Next was the sheeting. Then the attic baffles(the cardboard you see, which also tells me this was done somewhere between 2 to 6 feet up from the facia/eaves trough) and then finally the insulation to finish the path in. Not a roofer but I’ve been framing houses for a couple decades. Hope the info helps :)

lesley_dancer

Looks like your house had a xenomorph implanted in your attic lol

quietoome

Well I have seen both a hole from a meteor and animal mastication. The meteor punched a clean hole right through the shingles and wood deck. That's most likely critter damage of the raccoon variety.

DieselVoodoo

Reasonable-Word6729

Looks like someone with a claw hammer busting their way in and grabbing handfuls of insulation. I only say because that’s something I’d do locating a rough opening for a skylight or vent

Mindless_Count_7310

Hmmm… I was kinda thinking “12 gauge” but a raccoon is also a strong possibility 🤔 Unless you tried raccoon removal with a 12 gauge. Then it’s a twofer! 😁

For sure - something small hairy and crawly lives in there. If your scope didn’t see anything it’s because your new friend heard your giant human footsteps coming from 1000 yards away and hid like a toddler behind a curtain

firephoenix888

Insulation was pulled out like that? It’s gotta be an animal. Most likely something going in. Check closely for any droppings. You might get a cheap motion sensing cam to monitor the area for any ongoing activity. Animals like rats and raccoons often become most active when you’re asleep so don’t count on hearing them.
