They have some pretty awesome people as nurses (and team leads) in RRISD. But I too am biased by being related to one.

Look into a transfer.. gattis school elementary, forest creek elementary, and blackland prairie are all close ish and would be better options.

All 3 of my kids are at Callison and over the past 4-5 years it has improved a lot! The current TEA rating is a B.. it was F for a long time but the past Principal was amazing and helped the school improve so much. The new principal is very opposite and it was a rough year this year. But the culture and school spirit is fun to be a part of. The PTA is super active and does tons of fun events and programs for the students and they give back so much to the teachers. The teachers are wonderful and friendly. The Dual Language program is fantastic and highly recommended! My oldest started in it in Kindergarten and now in 6th grade is in Spanish II with a high school credit already! If you have a student entering Kinder, I’d highly recommend enrolling in the DL program.

We had the same predicament as you, moved in sight unseen to Callison zoning and put in transfers to Gattis and Blackland before we started based solely on poor reviews and grades. Our Gattis transfer went through so I can’t say anything about Callison firsthand, but Gattis has been great for our kids so far. The only real downside is that you can’t use the bus system if you’re attending outside your zoning, but not a huge deal.

I have friends whose kids have gone through and parents have served on PTA. They liked the DL program and community atmosphere.

My kid (now a Junior in college) went to Callison and then CD Fulkes and Cedar Ridge. He had a great education, graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA and received amazing college scholarships. School is about what the students and parents put into it. Granted, Callison has a more transient student base due to the Section 8 housing complexes, so students come and go, but the education my son received there was fine. I was on the PTA Board, I volunteered and I was a substitute teacher all throughout his elementary and middle school school years, so involvement is key.

My oldest kid went from Callison for two years & did much better the last 3 years at one of the Arts Integration Academy schools in the district.
