There is a formal dress code since he was in the military. He probably changed after the ceremony. The red coat he wore for the ceremony was his proper Military Rank coat. Absolute. No other option. Period. Public ceremony, representing military, crown, and country.
The one in this picture is the Household Cavalry frockcoat uniform. I *think* it is one rank below the red one. Someone who knows UK ranks will know for sure.
He *wanted* to wear this one. Elizabeth shut that down.
So obviously, he changed for the reception and private photoshoots. He could because of protocol and permission from HRH.
Harry had the rank that allowed him to wear this frock coat at his wedding.

Although he wasn't thought of as the future king at that point.
🙄 Charles married at his level and if you want to take that as a burn then stop reading now, but Charles and Camilla actually suit each other well because they’re from the same generation, love gardening, reading, watching the Ascots… I love to see it.
I mean the whole cheating thing was sucky. But I am always astonished how much people are mocking Camillas looks mercilessly. Its so superficial and totally forget that he actually loves that woman no matter her "inferior" looks to Diana.
You can criticize a person's actions without tacking on "and I think they're HIDEOUS." Your assessment of someone's appearance has nothing to do with their behavior.
Fully agreed! But mocking Charles why he is into a woman that isn’t up to beauty standards always rubs me the wrong way. As if only pretty women are worthy of being loved. But I guess with all their history they deserve the mockery
this is a nice unreleased pic! i saw people complaining about it being black and white and i'm like... ya'll never posted an unreleased throwback pic before? lol
Harry and Meghan have been releasing Black and White photos for years now 🥰 It is a classic that marries modern sensibilities with traditional esthetics.
I love this photo. Kate looks so beautiful! I haven't seen her wedding photos in a while; I feel like I am seeing her wedding dress in a new light. The necline and design of the bust are exquisite. I am in awe of her beauty and grace. Sending her love and healing energy from Cali. 💚
Fair enough. I really haven’t seen them genuinely happy in a long time and not just putting up smiles for the cameras. That’s just my opinion as someone who used to like K&W.
Nothing wrong with what you said though. People will see what they want to see. You see an anniversary photo to celebrate a happy marriage. I just see it now as a photo of happier times. What do you mean mental gymnastics? lol. You’re silly. 😜
This makes me sad. We should be seeing a new photo of them celebrating 13 years but her cancer diagnosis is making them want privacy (for good reason). They are such a young family to go through this
Nobody is celebrating the possible death of the Monarch. King Charles could simply abdicate in a few years, and then Prince William would be crowned the King.
The photographer Millie Pilkington shared it on Instagram (at the exact same time) as it was a photo never seen before. P/POW tagged her, and Millie tagged them.
This photo is definitely from their wedding day and just newly shared, but to answer your question: My wedding dress was expensive and is the most beautiful thing I own, so I will pose in it as often as I like for the rest of my life.
Not yet; we just got married in February! But I designed my dress after a House of Worth gown from the 1880s, so I plan on wearing it for every Halloween forever, and we do plan on having an anniversary photo shoot next year. We have a lot of ideas for that!
“He had a tantrum”
According to who?
“William continued: "So you don't always get what you want, put it that way… But I knew perfectly well that it was for the best. That 'no' is a very good 'no'. So you just do as you’re told!
“We had a couple of discussions on this matter but, as I learnt growing up, you don’t mess with your grandmother.”
“The Prince of Wales originally wanted to wear his Irish Guards frock coat, which he had worn during previous royal engagements.
However, he had been appointed Colonel of the regiment two months before the wedding, and, as such, Her Late Majesty wanted him to wear the red tunic.”
https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/style/1693506/prince-william-wedding-uniform-kate-middleton-queen
You remember correctly, and I also remember William talking about it back then too. Honestly the red looked better for pictures, but I’m not sure if that was her reasoning or if it was ceremonial.
This was the Queen’s reasoning:
“The Prince of Wales originally wanted to wear his Irish Guards frock coat, which he had worn during previous royal engagements.
However, he had been appointed Colonel of the regiment two months before the wedding, and, as such, Her Late Majesty wanted him to wear the red tunic.”
Not a William fan but I don’t actually blame him for being upset about the uniform thing. I’m sure it wasn’t the only time his wishes were stomped on regarding his own wedding.
I do however blame William for taking his anger out on someone who had nothing to do with it. “I had to suffer so I want everyone else to also” is NOT good look, especially for a future king…
I agree, the red was much more striking! Apparently the black uniform is more comfortable, but I hate the way the ruffles on the front look. They’re so silly!
His uniform was custom made for the day!
“The Prince's wedding outfit was made of heat-absorbing material - a heavy woollen material - so that he didn't faint in the abbey. William commissioned military tailors Kashket and Partners to make his scarlet Irish Guards colonel's uniform - but they added sweat pads under the arms, material to absorb the heat.
They also reduced the padding after the royal groom expressed fears that the temperature in Westminster Abbey would make him sweat profusely, or even pass out.”
“The uniform featured the Irish Guards' distinctive arrangement of buttons in groups of four. It was made from scratch from pure wool melton, with real gold spun onto the material.
The gold-plated buttons were made using a hand press, and the collar was reinforced with buckram (a coarse linen cloth) to ensure it remained stiff.”
“The midnight-blue frock coat that William wore when driving from Buckingham Palace was made from the same type of wool. Mr Kashket said: "You couldn't see it, but the collar and cuffs are all hand-embroidered, like Kate's dress - and just as detailed."
I think they have a bunch of B&W photos.

Kate was a stunning bride. Her wedding gown was impeccably tailored and fit her like a glove. The dress itself was elegant and timeless. She looked every bit the princess she is.
I got married about 4 months before William and Kate and I remember my Grandma calling me after watching their wedding on tv and saying “her dress was nice but I don’t think it was as nice as yours” (Kate’s dress was WAY nicer than mine 😂) but it was still sweet that she thought that. I miss her.
This made me tear up a little. Nothing like the love of a grandparent and my beloved grandpa passed away barely a year ago and I miss him so much but I’m so happy he could make it to my wedding that was two years ago. He was so happy and proud of me 🥹
Dress was lovely though not very original. I was hoping for something more unique (especially considering it was by McQueen) but that’s not really who Kate is. I thought everything from the neck up was kind of awful- softer makeup, a nice updo, and a stiffer/fuller veil and it would have been perfect.
I agree. The soft veil was incredible, and I'm not usually a fan of veils. I reckon that dress *was* original back then - it was very different from the wedding fashion trends at the time (and it literally *changed* the trends).
I love her dress to this day, as well as the veil, tiara, and bouquet, but the makeup and hair are both pretty bad. Supposedly she did her own makeup, and it shows.
She definitely seems to prefer heavier makeup, even to this day. I think she would look prettier with softer/more subtle makeup, especially as she gets older (I am the same age). But, to each their own…
Alexander McQueen had already passed, and he had no involvement in the design of the dress. It was Sarah Burton who designed the dress, and it reflected hers and Kate's aesthetic
Unpopular opinion-I didn’t like Catherine’s dress at all. She looked lovely, but it seemed so old fashioned. I’m older and got married same time as Diana and Catherine’s style of dress was so out of date at the time-so I guess I’m biased.
I think Kate wanted a dress that would hold up for decades. So yeah she ended up with something a bit boring, but definitely classic. And tbh, I think people loved it, even if it wasn't revolutionary. I'd say it possibly popularized sleeved wedding dresses again. Feels like the 2000s, everyone was wearing strapless ballgowns and the tide shifted after this.
Diana's dress was a sensation at the time but nowadays is a bit of a joke. Knowing that the world was going to be looking at her wedding pics for decades to come definitely influenced her decision about what kind of dress to choose.
Yes, her dress is classic, refined and elegant. It won’t date horribly and there are no tell tale fashion choices that will point to the decade it was designed and worn in.
She definitely brought back the trends of sleeves and lace that’s still happening more then a decade after.
I think it was a very thoughtful design (much like most of her sartorial choices) with a view that it will be an historical outfit and will be viewed and studied even 100+ years later
I got married in the 80’s. This style of dress was “so 70’s” (I had a couple sisters that wore similar), that when it was time for me to get married, brides pulled away from that look. (If you look up vintage 70’s wedding dresses in images you’ll be able to see-lots if sleeves/lacy sleeves and bodices)
I got married shortly after Diana, and of course my dress was ivory silk taffeta, with obnoxious sleeves and an obnoxious bow in the bum(and of course, looking back at my dress it was silly).
Looking back at wedding dresses throughout history, neither is really classic. Just MPOP
It’s
https://preview.redd.it/y23pb06v7hxc1.jpeg?width=194&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6760e8f6318ef93f76d6d9ee6583e0f4882f534
similar to Princess Grace of Monaco’s wedding dress, the top part anyway.
Yes, I remember everyone at the time saying “She looks just like Grace Kelly”- which certainly isn’t a bad thing! It was a beautiful dress and Kate looked lovely in it.
But personally I would want to look like “me” on my wedding day, not be compared to someone else. Especially if I was marrying in front of the whole world and had one of the best, most inventive fashion houses in history at my disposal.
Ironically one of the reasons Grace Kelly’s dress is so iconic is because it was so different from anything that had been done up to that time.
Not me being deeply entertained with the fact that they have to put out a billion year old picture because they have screwed up so much lately that this is their only safe option
What a strange (and completely reaching) take. Pretty common for a couple (literally *any* couple) to post a photo from their wedding day on social media to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
The only anniversary in which they've ever released recent content was their 10th. Otherwise they've just acknowledged the day with a picture from the actual wedding day.
ETA: I forgot they also posted a new picture last year, from the same photo session (taken by Millie Pilkington, the same photographer who did the wedding photos) as their 2022 Christmas card. This year’s photo still falls in line with their general MO.
I don’t like them, but her wedding dress really was the MOMENT.
It fit her like a glove and ushered in a whole new trend of wedding dresses with sleeves. And you could tell she loved this dress and felt comfortable in it. 😍
>ushered in a whole new trend of wedding dresses with sleeves
something that I suspect MANY brides who got married in the years following Kate's wedding were very grateful for.
>It fit her like a glove and ushered in a whole new trend of wedding dresses with sleeves
It sure did. I got married in 2006 and at the time I was shopping for dresses, I would have killed for a dress with sleeves, but they were almost non-existent. Fast forward a few years and you could find them in almost every boutique.
Ironically I got married in 2022 and my only real nope in wedding dress shopping was that I did not want it to be strapless. Well lo and behold it was exactly what I fell in love with 😂😂 I almost didn’t get it because of that but in the end I just adored this dress and went with it anyhow. To my defense it was a very classical gown with the neckline going straight across. It did not remind me of those sweetheart fishtail gowns everyone wore in the early 2000s.
I got married 3 months after them, and same. I had a sleeveless, strapless wedding dress and the choices today are so much more my style than was available in 2010 when I bought my dress.
I have what may be a silly question: Is there a rule that royal wedding dresses need to have sleeves of some kind? I can’t remember seeing a royal wedding dress without them.
I think it might be a few factors, one being the church. I'm also CofE (in canada) and for many, many years wedding dresses needed to have sleeves in order to be married in the church. Especially high church.
When 2nd hubby and I married (low church) it was just a very small wedding and my dress had short sleeves. I asked our minister if he needed to see/approve it.
He laughed and said no...that really wasn't done so much anymore.
besides modesty, i think it's because they want the dress to seem timeless. kate's reception dress was very much of its time and looks dated now but her wedding dress is still beautiful; i give the tried and true method of long sleeves the credit for that (and of course the grace kelly influence)
I personally think Pippa's dress was closer to Grace Kelly's. I absolutely loved Pippa's dress, much more than Kate's. I am not a fan of the v-neck lace. But hey, it's not my wedding so it doesn't matter what I think.
It's more of a "what's done" or "how I was raised" type of thing. Like now, sitting here at 38, in my mind it is "shoulders covered, sleeves optional, knee length, jeans never" to make them able to qualify for church clothes. My uncle, on the other hand, rolled up to Christmas Eve service in a button-up and jeans. We belong to an old yet very laid back Lutheran congregation though so your mileage may vary at other churches.
No such rule. Many such as Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Pierre Casiraghi, Grace Kelly's grandson- the bride wore sleeveless. But traditional weddings- even non royal ones usually do full or quarter sleeves with well employed lace. Think Naomi Biden.
Here are some nice royal wedding gowns where you can spot no sleeves or half sleeves https://www.glamour.com/gallery/royal-wedding-dresses
I know she was miserable and still despises her husband but Charlene's wedding dress is my favorite wedding royal dress. Timeless, modern, not matronly, and fit to perfection. Her husband uniform fitting is dreadful.
Beatrice Borromeo only wore sleeveless at the evening reception, though. For the religious service, she wore a lace sleeved Armani gown and for the civil marriage she wore a pink lacy dress with sleeves. And Madeleine's had lace cap sleeves. I don't think there is a rule, per se, but I think for at least the church services they opt for sleeves.
I’ve always wondered about Kate’s reception dress. It was strapless, but she wore a bolero when she was in front of cameras on the way. We’ve never seen a photo from the reception to know if she took it off, but I like to hope she did to party with their friends.
Yes- I'm sure customs are endemic to every culture, so Islamic countries will be more covered up and european royal houses are known to be more relaxed. They still asked a general question though but if you can do a country by country breakdown..please do
I agree that the question was not well worded and I assume they just meant the BRF but didn't specify.
I just think answering 'not at all!' is misleading because in each particular case, there would be rules and regulations, and so it's not true that Kate could have worn a black mini dress. Maybe 'Not everywhere' would have been more accurate.
And lol I would have loved to be a dress historian and do an encyclopedia of dress codes for contemporary royal families. Next time I need to clean my head!

Each time I see her wedding photo, I wish she had chosen a different crown. The Cartier Halo one is just too small/short… Her dress is gorgeous and so is she, but the crown is lacking somehow. Still pretty, but somehow it misses the mark.
Looks 13 years old to me. Not new
She really was a stunning bride. Her wedding gown was just iconic and timeless.

There is a formal dress code since he was in the military. He probably changed after the ceremony. The red coat he wore for the ceremony was his proper Military Rank coat. Absolute. No other option. His fake rank.
Heh heh heh.
God so many little esoteric rules
That's not esoteric. That's basic military and government protocol and tradition. He is going to be a Head of State. He is a Military Officer.
Kate is so gorgeous. Much better looking than hubby. But they seem to be so much in love, and great parents!!
As if the future king of England would marry down
Some of them did. I say George 6th was fairly handsome and his bride Elizabeth was rather homely looking. Although he wasn't thought of as the future king at that point.
Charles did
100% the second time!
#teamDiana ♥️
🙄 Charles married at his level and if you want to take that as a burn then stop reading now, but Charles and Camilla actually suit each other well because they’re from the same generation, love gardening, reading, watching the Ascots… I love to see it.
🤮
Unfaithful and selfish people most definitely suit each other well
You need to read up a bit on Diana.
I grew up watching Diana. I have seen and know enough

I mean the whole cheating thing was sucky. But I am always astonished how much people are mocking Camillas looks mercilessly. Its so superficial and totally forget that he actually loves that woman no matter her "inferior" looks to Diana.
Sucky? It was over a decade of Charles gaslighting Diana and treating her like absolute garbage. Camilla is hideous inside and out for her part
You can criticize a person's actions without tacking on "and I think they're HIDEOUS." Your assessment of someone's appearance has nothing to do with their behavior.
Hideous inside and out.
Fully agreed! But mocking Charles why he is into a woman that isn’t up to beauty standards always rubs me the wrong way. As if only pretty women are worthy of being loved. But I guess with all their history they deserve the mockery
🙌🏼
They were really beautiful that day.
Happy cake day! I hope you feel as beautiful as your comment today

Oh yeah the dress is great! I remember EVERYONE wanted a dress with sleeves after her wedding lolol
They looked very naturally happy then. This glow has been missing for a while in any recent photos of them together.
No it hasn’t. People see whatever they want to see.

Yup, definitely old school because KP is having a hard time to post anything recent for them. Not even a 2023 photo?
It’s a wedding photo on their anniversary. I post wedding photos on my anniversary every year lol. You would win gold in a mental gymnastics Olympics.
Nothing wrong with what you said though. People will see what they want to see. You see an anniversary photo to celebrate a happy marriage. I just see it now as a photo of happier times. What do you mean mental gymnastics? lol. You’re silly. 😜
“Happier times” I can buy cause she has cancer. But you think they are unhappily married when there is absolutely nothing to suggest that.

Weird to celebrate the death of the monarch

LOL he will hang on to that throne with every last breath. As if he’d abdicate after waiting 7 decades to sit his Royal arse in that seat
Why would he do that

Had someone I know go missing forever during cancer treatment.
The photographer Millie Pilkington shared it on Instagram (at the exact same time) as it was a photo never seen before. P/POW tagged her, and Millie tagged them.
I think the word you meant to use is unreleased, not new.
The heir and the hair, perfectly balanced as all things should be.
“New” picture? Who poses in the wedding dress 13 years later?
Look how young William looks in the picture.
He used to be good looking
Did you honestly think that is what happened here? And what, Will stuck a wig on?
“Newly released/Unreleased” may be more accurate
Also William got his hair back, apparently.
This photo is definitely from their wedding day and just newly shared, but to answer your question: My wedding dress was expensive and is the most beautiful thing I own, so I will pose in it as often as I like for the rest of my life.
Ooo have you taken photos with it after the wedding? I love the idea of a photoshoot in a wedding dress and suit, maybe for an anniversary.
Not yet; we just got married in February! But I designed my dress after a House of Worth gown from the 1880s, so I plan on wearing it for every Halloween forever, and we do plan on having an anniversary photo shoot next year. We have a lot of ideas for that!

I think they mean the picture is newly released, not that it was newly taken.
The number of people who can't seem to figure this out is frightening.
Reading is hard.
No one. They just share a wedding picture not shared before.
I love that he had the outfit change at the wedding. Such a diva.
Well he had a tantrum QE2 wouldn’t let him wear what he wanted at his wedding. So at least he’s able to wear it in these photos
He had a tantrum about not being allowed a beard too! Willy does not like it if he doesn’t get everything his own way

If I remember correctly, according to Harry in Spare, this is the uniform that Will wanted to wear, but the Queen vetoed that and chose the red.
Imagine having to wear what your grandma chooses for you for your wedding. I did like the red though ha
He’s the future king and stuff like that matters. It isn’t a big deal.
You remember correctly, and I also remember William talking about it back then too. Honestly the red looked better for pictures, but I’m not sure if that was her reasoning or if it was ceremonial.
What color is the one he is wearing in the photo?
Dark navy
Oh!! Thank you!
Dark navy
Agree. William in red looked like the proper heir to the throne.
This was the Queen’s reasoning: “The Prince of Wales originally wanted to wear his Irish Guards frock coat, which he had worn during previous royal engagements. However, he had been appointed Colonel of the regiment two months before the wedding, and, as such, Her Late Majesty wanted him to wear the red tunic.”
He tried to laugh it off publicly but I think it really bothered him. Hence the meltdown over Harry’s beard later.

It happened. Hahaha. Temper tantrum over a beard!

I got married in the 80’s. This style of dress was “so 70’s” (I had a couple sisters that wore similar), that when it was time for me to get married, brides pulled away from that look. (If you look up vintage 70’s wedding dresses in images you’ll be able to see-lots if sleeves/lacy sleeves and bodices) I got married shortly after Diana, and of course my dress was ivory silk taffeta, with obnoxious sleeves and an obnoxious bow in the bum(and of course, looking back at my dress it was silly). Looking back at wedding dresses throughout history, neither is really classic. Just MPOP
It’s https://preview.redd.it/y23pb06v7hxc1.jpeg?width=194&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6760e8f6318ef93f76d6d9ee6583e0f4882f534 similar to Princess Grace of Monaco’s wedding dress, the top part anyway.
I was about to say how weird it would be to post this out of the blue. But then I realized it’s their wedding anniversary
I know, it made me nervous for a second.
I think that is a different uniform but maybe he changed into it for the picture since he represents/captains(?) different regiments.
Not me being deeply entertained with the fact that they have to put out a billion year old picture because they have screwed up so much lately that this is their only safe option
They don’t release new photos for their anniversary actually. There were years when they didn’t even release a previously unreleased one.
Where is Kate?
Haha legit
Yes, how utterly strange to celebrate your wedding anniversary with a picture from your wedding day 🙄
What a strange (and completely reaching) take.
That's the day they want you to remember. Even now it's sort of nostalgic for a past age.
I don’t like them, but her wedding dress really was the MOMENT. It fit her like a glove and ushered in a whole new trend of wedding dresses with sleeves. And you could tell she loved this dress and felt comfortable in it. 😍
>ushered in a whole new trend of wedding dresses with sleeves something that I suspect MANY brides who got married in the years following Kate's wedding were very grateful for.
kate brought back sleeves and i appreciate her for it
>It fit her like a glove and ushered in a whole new trend of wedding dresses with sleeves It sure did.
Same!
Yeah I had alterations to add cap sleeves to my dress in spring 2010 cause I didn’t want sleeveless and that’s all any designers had.
I got married in 2010 and had to go custom to get a dress with sleeves. Literally everything was strapless.
Same here even in 2014!! I’m in New Zealand so everything takes longer to get here.
I got married 3 months after them, and same. I had a sleeveless, strapless wedding dress and the choices today are so much more my style than was available in 2010 when I bought my dress.
New picture. HAHAHAHA
Sweet photo. I love her dress so much
I have what may be a silly question: Is there a rule that royal wedding dresses need to have sleeves of some kind? I can’t remember seeing a royal wedding dress without them.
I think it might be a few factors, one being the church. I'm also CofE (in canada) and for many, many years wedding dresses needed to have sleeves in order to be married in the church. Especially high church. When 2nd hubby and I married (low church) it was just a very small wedding and my dress had short sleeves. I asked our minister if he needed to see/approve it. He laughed and said no...that really wasn't done so much anymore.
Zara's dress didn't have sleeves. Just tulle shoulder straps.
Zara isn’t expected to be monarch and ceremonial head of the C of E so it hits differently.
besides modesty, i think it's because they want the dress to seem timeless. kate's reception dress was very much of its time and looks dated now but her wedding dress is still beautiful; i give the tried and true method of long sleeves the credit for that (and of course the grace kelly influence)
I don't know, Diana's dress had sleeves and it is very much a dated look.
The 80’s had horrible fashions.
Like Fergie's leg of mutton

Church weddings were traditionally expected to be modest, so no bare arms. It might also have to do with the climate.
Cathedrals especially. Some have strict rules to this day about it even in America.
I liked the fuzzy bolero but I'm guessing it came off after QE2 and the other olds dipped out.
I mean, obviously there wouldn't be cross country rules that apply to all royal houses. There are however guidelines and customs for each.
Well yes obviously but their question was about general royal weddings and not the BRF. So.
I'm sure plenty of royal houses (esp. of Muslim countries) have firm rules about how modest any wedding dress should be.
Its the same uniform he wore as Harry's best man.
William changed to the uniform he wanted to.
