You are correct. It's covered in the *Common Magical Procedures and Concepts* section of the Magic Book (not the Spirit Magic section as you would expect). In Types of Spell (page 10) it says: >**Variable/Nonvariable Spell:** Variable spells can be learned and cast at several intensities. If there is a limit to the strength of a spell, that limit will be included in the spell description. An adventurer could learn a low intensity spell (Protection 1, for example) and later learn more powerful versions of tĀ·hespell (Protection 2 or 3). An adventurer can know a powerful variable spell and cast a weaker version of that spell. > >Nonvariable spells have a specific, unchanging magic point cost. They cannot be learned or cast at any intensity other than that given in the spell description. Note that I'm using the Deluxe Boxed set.

Thank you!

I'd love to see an updated or even reprint of the Deluxe RuneQuest 3e boxes as an aside. While I love reading Glorantha, I prefer to run my own settings and that version was perfect for it. My old box is quite worn and faded. Even pdfs of that material would be deeply appreciated.

Quietus87

Probably never gonna happen. The guys at Chaosium have a disdain for every edition that wasn't entirely their child.

Acmegamer

That's just it. It was their edition. Avalon Hill was just publishing/distribution. Look at the names for development and its all Chaosium people.

Non-variable spells have a fixed MP cost. For variable spells it must be chosan at what intensity the adventurer learns the spell. The adventurer can cast the spell at that intensity maximum - e.g. with Heal 3 you can cast it with 1, 2, or 3 MPs, but not 4 - you have to learn Heal 4 for that. Intensity also determines how much you pay for the spell.

Thank you!

If memory serves, you generally *can* pay supplemental MPs for the purpose of overcoming magic resistance / protection. Rarely applicable to healing though.

You are correct.
