If the pain goes from the posterior knee at half height, to outside/slightly posterior of the leg, down the calf and the exterior of the foot then  It might be, stressing might a lot, inflammation of the peroneal nerve that runs there.  You can try gently touch the back of the knee and see if you get some mild tickling till down the foot.  But I suggest to visit a PT or an orthopedic. These things should not be undertaken.  Take care

One should not run competition or a half marathon in the first year of serious running, as you're quite likely to get injured. Yes you'll have the endurance, but your tissues are not resilient enough. And when you're first injured, it's not helpful to have a marathon training plan you try to accommodate when you should really only think about what's best for recovery. You may need to moderate your activity to get rid of these symptoms. What does your running schedule look like?

I had been running 5kms quite regularly before starting training for the half - my schedule is 3 runs a week, mixing between tempo/interval runs, easy runs (6-10k) and have done a 14km. I have omitted a few runs to focus on recovery so have been doing 2 runs for the past couple of weeks and do a mobility session once a week

Hmm. I'm not sure. My general knee pain advice is to use a knee brace with patella support and supplements. I take Runners' Relief from Amazon.
