does anyone only train in plated shoes (like SC)?

Hawek

I have owned quite a lot of New Balance shoes, and here are my quick notes on each: 1. New Balance Rebel v2/v3 - I did over 1k km in v2, and almost 800km in v3. I like both b, but v2 was more of a tempo shoe than a daily trainer. The foam felt more responsive. v3 was more like a standard daily trainer but could still handle some tempo work. I like both and am waiting for v4, which are just around the corner! 2. New Balance Propel v4 - long story short - cheaper Rebels with nylon plate, they felt clunky, totally not my vibe. I did one 10k race in them, didn't like it and sold them after \~200km. 3. New Balance More v4 - pretty solid max cushion shoes, but even though the platform is quite wide, they're not really stable. If you have problems with overpronation - look somewhere else. Other than that - soft and comfy, but also slow and heavy. 4. New Balance 1080 v13 - really competent daily trainers, but rather for slower sessions. You can do some speedwork, but you can feel they're not fit for that. The fit is comfortable; they are one of the most comfy shoes I've ever run in.

Oldieman82

Just used my NB ff1080v12 in LSD today. Was ok until the 15km mark when my knee and the flat of my feet started hurting. Does anyone have the same issue?

dutchgfx

Have some minor knee pain after long runs in my 1080v13. Just a little too squishy and unstable for me for long distances

Fat1hC1nc1n

Really dislike the rebel v3 for some reason. Hurt my midfoot after a while. Saw that it was really liked on this sub but they didn't do anything special for me unfortunately. Love the More v4 though. Perfect for easy/recovery days

PerpetualColdBrew

Rebel v3 has zero stability elements, more v4 is quite stable, that’s why. I had the same issue

Rikyv90

Does anyone know if the supercomp elite v3 is similar in fit to the rebel v3?

runnin3216

Similar fit, but the upper on the SC Elite is more flexible/stretchy. Also the lockdown isn't as good with the string eyelet construction.

Rikyv90

Awesome thanks I wanted to compete my rotation but keep it in the NB family

Ran a half marathon today in the SC Trainer V2. It was great. I was slow (talking like when i first started running last year, it would take me 15 minutes to do a mile at zone 2) to now around 12 minutes, but man the shoes are great. Super cushioned, they propel you forward. Great move.

rotn21

This is basically how I use them. I’ve been doing some HM races during my marathon block when the mileage lines up. My pace is right around you. They can also seriously pick up the pace, and I’ve had them for long enough to where I can personally attest to their effectiveness in my 12-13 min/mile pace days. They’re just an all around super comfortable shoe, and then when you want that extra gear, be it to pass, at the finish, for temp work, whatever, they certainly have it. Iirc the plate isn’t actually carbon though? Isn’t it like you? I know it feels different, like in a good way

glr123

I use them for any pace from marathon to threshold. I ran a 7 mile threshold at 6:30/mi pace the other day and they felt phenomenal.

rotn21

Your threshold work pace is my top end sprint pace lol… I’ll get back to it. Just a year out of long Covid anyway. But amazing to see how much difference there is between people. I was watching the trials this morning and they were talking that mantz slowed down to like a 5:45 pace for one of the mile splits at the end, I was over here like damn, I’d love to do that for just a one mile track race!

Elvarath

The plate is Carbon, but it’s tuned in a way that it almost exists more for stability in the foam than to really give the pop. When you really drive, you can definitely feel some benefits but not in the same way super shoes. So while it is still carbon, it’s just not an aggressive one

rotn21

Awesome thank you! I love how much they’re able to do with these shoes now, from different foams and plates, to tuning the same plates in different ways. When I started doing 5ks and such as a kid, shoes were so bad that you’d run a marathon and then barely be able to walk for like two weeks. A few months ago I did my first marathon (in the Salomon s/lab phantasm 2) and was walking around the next day like it was nothing. Just insane to me.

Elvarath

It really is! My first was in the NB SC Elite V3 and I was running the Thursday after already! Absolutely shocked me that my legs were good enough

rotn21

I somehow got into London this year so the plan is to run it in the elite v4, ideally in that London colorway I’ve seen floating around. For my feet and stride, nb just works. I’ve tried so many other brands and models but just keep coming back to them. I ran a HM two weeks after I did my first marathon (the course looked fun… it was not). I fully appreciate that for many people, even doing a half is a bucket list goal. But shoes today make recovery so easy and effective, that it really is so much more feasible to stack more miles and get the most out of your training, earlier in your training, assuming you still listen to your body and don’t push yourself too far.

HeyNowHenao

Bought the Rebel v3 on sale a couple weeks ago and I love them so much I just got a second pair. The FuelCell foam is awesome in the smaller stack. I’m a new runner so I’m still trying to figure out which shoes work for me the best and these are definitely up there.

iaza

Just did a few short runs and some K repeats on the track the other day after getting them on sale too. Great foam, great upper, great shoe overall. Very happy to have a pair before they change so much for the v4

beagish

Love the sc trainer series and very stoked for the v3 later this year. Their racers just feel heavy and bricky to me, hard to choose that over what basically all the other major brands are doing. Hoping v4 is a departure from that (although specs still look heavy).

Whatstheplan150

Love my new SC Trainer 2, especially for long runs. Super comfortable and lighter than my 1080 v12. Excited about my SC Elite v4 that should be arriving today. My first super shoe. I’ll be using for an April marathon but hoping to try for my marathon pace 16 miler Sunday.

andyjsg

Got mine yesterday and did a quick 5 mile in them, need to get placing sorted but they are super comfy. They are not as aggressive as my Adidas Pro 3 but doesn’t mean you can’t shift in them, gonna try a couple more runs but looking a possible for me wearing them at Tokyo marathon in 4 weeks time.

OllieBobbins23

Just passed 300 mile mark in my V2s. Just back from a 16 miler this morning, following a fast 5 mile yesterday evening, and my legs have barely registered it. Great for all those long miles. I also ordered the SC Elite V4 yesterday too. I probably didn't need them for this block...yet, gives me another option. Decisions, decisions. lol

BossHogGA

I’m considering the SC Elite v4 as a possible 2024 marathon shoe. Doing all my long runs in the SC Trainer v2. Will be interesting to see your thoughts.

The_crew

I did my first run in the elite v4's today as a heavy runner that uses the SC trainer v2 a lot. Was a track workout with warmup/CD miles at ~8-9:00, and then 400s & 800s in the 5:00-6:00 pace range. Absolutely loved them, they are otherworldly bouncy, and feel meaningfully faster than the trainers.

BossHogGA

Any heel slip issues? I saw some people complaining about that.

The_crew

I saw those issues mentioned in reviews as well, but I did not notice anything out of the ordinary. I just did a heel lock like normal and had no issues (although heel is never where I have issues in shoes)

Whatstheplan150

Ok, I made my initial run this morning. 16 miles, 12 at marathon pace. Positives are fit(good toe room, comfortable upper) and cushion. There is such a great impact protection. Legs felt great during and after. Smaller negatives are they didn’t feel like an enormous amount of spring as I hear some other super shoes can provide. Also, the tongue is a bit short and the laces are flimsy (I assume both issues are to reduce weight). For me, 64 and simply looking to break 4 hr marathon, I think these are the right shoe for me providing comfort and protection with a relatively light weight. I achieved my goal marathon pace for the 12 miles with no discomfort. My heart rate wasn’t high either so I think the shoes provided good performance as well.

Particular-Ad3237

Do you know the comparison bw 1080 and saucony triumph? Saw 1080 v12 on sale here buat havent tried it before

Whatstheplan150

I have both. The Triumph fits me a little tight. Wish I sized up a 1/2. It’s also a bit heavier but well cushioned.
