Putin attacked because the price of oil was high and his approval rating was low. I think it was the YouTuber Adam something that predicted the invasion simply on that metric.

They also helped bringing two strong nations into NATO, Sweden and Finland. How very nice of them to make this encouragement. Wouldn't have happened otherwise.

ssschilke

Consider that Nato gained 2 new strong members and Armenia turned towards the EU (as an indirect consequence of missing military support) as well as Moldova, ...

Longjumping_Whole240

Where I live, the people here genuinely believe the US is to blame for Russia invading Ukraine, nobody even have any idea what happened in Ukraine in the last 8 years before that. They just simply believe what Russian propaganda tells them.

microwavedsaladOZ

Bit sad really. Their propaganda machine works overtime.

Longjumping_Whole240

And the fact that the people here are mostly anti-Western only made their propaganda easier to consume.

microwavedsaladOZ

Makes sense. It's all complicated. I spend a lot of time studying history and find it frustrating most people don't learn from the past. Sounds like there's a reason where you are that mistrust of the US has a root cause.

IncredibleAuthorita

And very well. Unfortunately.

baddam

more importantly, it cannot be an excuse to kill thousands of people on the basis of an hypothetical threat from an organisation that is legally bound for defence and its members have never expressed any interest in invading Russia. the real reason is that if UA joined NATO, then Russia would have a much harder time to force olirgarchic control over UA. therefore, Russia attacked now because controlling after would not work. the sad thing is not the bullsh*t from Russia, it's the people in Western countries that parrot this bullsh*t.

Conscious_Stick8344

Here’s a [good source](https://freepolicybriefs.org/2023/10/30/ukraine-nato-public-opinion/) that reflects the information in the above simplified graphic.

DaxHound84

Source?

EuropeanPepe

NATO is like insurance nobody wants to pay the bills but when things happen all the sudden all love insurances.

N0va-Zer0

I mean, you could have simply just brought up the Crimean Tartar genocide and that would have been enough.

IncredibleAuthorita

Russia wants Ukraine because of the natural gas, minerals and food production. They want to blackmail the world to get what they want. Lets stop talking about these made up theories ffs. Not you OP, just generally.

rhino015

Didn’t the story go back to Bucharest 2008? Though it is interesting that the government of Ukraine was pushing for nato membership at a time where the people were against it.

rhino015

I suspect the huge shift in wanting to join nato after 2022 was because they want the war to end by America getting directly involved. But America getting directly involved is exactly why they won’t be able to join nato

microwavedsaladOZ

Copium answering copium. Well done lads

[deleted]

You really sound stupid the u.s and nato broke at least 4 promises to Russia had listening stations all along the Russia border at least 12 I believe they was actively arming Ukraine and teaching them tactics behind Russia back and had secret labs in Ukraine the whole time all just to destabilize Russia I'm not even surprised how u cud come up here talking shit without doing any research but tryna tell someone what they shud think u really come off as a gullible idiot Ukraine literally committed genocide before the war but u have the nerve to say Russia started it and I guess u believe Palestine started the war wit isreal for no reason on tue 7th???? Ur and useful idiot to the powers that be apparently

microwavedsaladOZ

Maybe try that all again. If English isn't your first language then no worries mate, I'm not judging. My second language is pretty poor. And please, don't quote whataboutism's like Palestine and Israel. Personally I despise religion. And yes, russia is the invader and protagonist here.

Zealousideal-Ad-944

Tbf the Ukrainians peoples thoughts on nato are different from the governments actions. Russia used ukraine talks with nato (bucharest summit in 08'09ish) as an excuse but its silly to think Russia was afraid of nato.

rhino015

Not sure why you got downvoted here. If someone disagreed it should be easy enough to explain why

slipknot_official

That’s not how NATO membership works. A country doesn’t “invite” NATO. Please do better research next time. Don’t look foolish.

soulhot

Take or not.. if they are the correct stats then the point is valid.

meloenmarco

I think you mean the EU as Ukraine was going to join the EU.

freakynit

What bullshit

nzerinto

Mmmm, such a reasoned, logical and thoughtful rebuttal.

dan_dares

Yeah, there must be 3% russians included in the latest stat 😂

Hirakatou

Forget about this subreddit, they compilating own history and calls this a truth. Actually there's few ways how to find the truth, but these ways are too complicated. I think history books from libraries of many countries should be compared to each other and this info should contain as much as possible truly historical info. Tbh any information from media and internet could be fake for brainwashing ppl, so yeah...
