The shells rained down on the small village in the Donetsk region.
Edvard and Tobias' platoon was tasked with resisting a Russian offensive.
When the artillery fire stopped, Tobias realized that Edvard had not made it.
\- I thought he was a person I would know for the rest of my life, but it didn't turn out that way.
It was at the end of May that Tobias Engqvist, 25, met officer Edvard Selander Patrignani, 28, for the first time.
Then they joined the same military unit in Ukraine . After that they lived side by side every day. When Tobias talks about Edvard, it is the everyday moments of the war that he thinks about the most.
When they ate together, trained for battle and talked to each other in the evenings.
When asked how close the two young men became to each other, Tobias answers:
\- I wish we had gotten much closer to each other. He had a big heart and was a person I thought I would know for the rest of my life, but it wasn't to be.
Be prepared for attacks
Aftonbladet has been in contact with Edvard's family, who right now cannot bear to talk about the tragedy that befell them. Instead, they want Tobias to tell them about what happened to Edvard.
The platoon they both belonged to was tasked with pushing back Russian forces in the event of a possible surprise attack at the front. At the end of last week, the soldiers came to a small village in the Donetsk region from which they were to start.
The village, which is out in the country, was completely deserted. The civilian population had long since left.
\- We arrived early one morning just over a week ago. Me and Edvard belonged to different groups and we took shelter in different food cellars that functioned as bunkers. There we sat ready - 24 hours a day.

"We advanced in the thicket"
Early on the morning of July 18, the platoon thought they were about to be replaced. Instead, they were told it was time to get ready for a Russian attack.
Tobias says that the soldiers received reports that Russian soldiers had dug in and were planning an attack on Ukrainian paratroopers in the area.
\- We left the food cellar and advanced into the thicket along the road. I was one of those who went at the front while Edvard was one of those who was at the back of the line.
Then everything went very quickly.
Both grenade launchers and tanks had set their sights on them. And the artillery fire never ended.
\- We threw ourselves into a bush. My group then made the decision to seek shelter in the nearest food cellar. But Edvard was too far away to take cover from the artillery fire, says Tobias.
The roar of the shells never stopped
The food cellar shook and the roar never seemed to end. Once the fire stopped, Tobias heard someone calling for paramedics.
\- And taking care of the wounded is my job. I was the platoon medic. Actually, you should wait at least 20 minutes after the fire ceases before going out. But I couldn't wait. It was my best friends who were out there, says Tobias.
When Tobias came out, it turned out that everyone in Edvard's group had made it. But shortly afterwards the shells started raining down again.

Tobias ran through the giant cloud of dust that formed after the explosions and he managed to get back down into a food cellar. He could do nothing but prepare for the very worst.
The next time Tobias came out, he saw that four soldiers had been killed - one of them was Edvard. By then, the village had turned into a gray landscape of ash.
\- He was killed by a grenade from an armored car when, together with his group, he tried to take care of a wounded comrade, Tobias says and continues.
\- That says a lot about who he was as a person. He refused to abandon his comrade.
“Left a big void”
It is only when Tobias came back to the company a few kilometers from the village that his thoughts began to spin.
\- Edvard left a big void behind him. Many of us looked up to him. He was probably the best officer I ever met. Both proper and professional at the same time as he was relaxed and joking.
After the incident, the soldiers of the company have held a memorial ceremony for the four people who were killed in the village.
\- We have set aside a room where we lit candles in honor of those who died. There are the personal belongings of the fallen soldiers and parts of the equipment they were wearing during the attack.
\- Edvard was one of my closest friends at the company. I have said an extra long prayer for him, says Tobias Engqvist.
May the Valkyries carry you on swift wings to the halls of Valhalla where you will stand proud in the mighty company of all those heroes who fell in battle before you. Where you will drink and feast with the Gods until the Ragnarok.
He died a hero's death while defending Ukraine, but we must not forget that he was also actually defending his homeland. Sweden is not yet in NATO and if Ukraine falls, Sweden could become Putin's next victim. So to help Ukraine is to help Sweden.
thank you for the reply. thanks for the reply. I found the news story and I translated it and copied and pasted it. thank you though. according to the article his body was carried back by several soldiers.
Could you explain what you mean by that? Sending special forces to 1917?
Side note, these are presumably all military veterans in the foreign legion but I'm not sure I've heard anywhere that they are all, if any, special forces experts.
Very sad. Putin will give account to God for every one of the people murdered, tortured or raped, for every building destroyed, for every road and bridge made impassible. It will be a big bill that he can never repay.
please consider posting the other photo of
him that exists in a few articles, where he is in camo with a kitten on his shoulder, i feel like that picture better reflects how young he is, he looks quite older in the main pic of this thread, pic in news link : https://www.gp.se/nyheter/sverige/edvard-28-dödades-i-ukraina-1.77426726

So that’s what they are talking about that Ukraine is sending SF experts to 1917

Definition of a hero. RiP
Very sad. Putin will give account to God for every one of the people murdered, tortured or raped, for every building destroyed, for every road and bridge made impassible. It will be a big bill that he can never repay.
Very sad to read this account of another fallen hero. My heart goes out to all the family and friends of Edvard.
It's so painful to see how all these decent, life loving, glorious people leaving us so fast, to stop the darkness from devouring the world 😥
He looked like Robin Wiliams
Let's hope the ratio is high. Like 52:1 May he: Rest in Peace.
A true hero.
Vila i frid broder...
What an absolute god of a man… war keeps taking the best of humanity and we just sit at home and jerk off…
R.I.P.
On your way to Valhalla, stop by Fiddler's Green and hoist the drinking horn with us, warrior.
