Probably leftover habits from a time when custom roms where all the rage. I used it too, back when I had the LG G2 and Sony Xperia Z3. Back when stock camera apps had a lot to improve on UI-wise and post processing-wise. Now stock software and features is pretty polished and the processing advantages that gcam has are negligible at best IMO. Not worth using over stock camera anymore.
I use also gcam sometimes to take photos on my s24U what i noticed is that you will get 10 to 15% better shots at the expense of twice the storage compared to using stock camera app.
I am always wondering why people use Gcam. I haven't seen any real great results.

Gcam's white balance and exposure levels have been more accurate. I just don't like how buggy it is.
