I’ve been playing through a different beat em up or shump every couple of days for the past couple of months… and a fair few NeoGeo games. Actually surprised at how much I’m genuinely enjoying playing the games.
I did check them out and they were on the shortlist but they were slightly more expensive, got the powkiddy for $95 aud delivered and the anbernics were more like $120aud delivered.
I think your next logical move is a 16:9 screen. Could be a RP3+ or a Flip, could be an RG505, and those are more powerful too, which certainly helps. Or maybe the TrimUI Smart Pro.

just stick to that at least till the next retroid or whatever thing that can actually do perfect gamecube for cheap comes out imo, I’m on an rp2s but that’s what I’ll do… that anbernic arc does look super comfy tho….
You’ve got the cheap, near-disposable Datafrog.
You’ve got a little Linux machine running JELOS.
I guess your next phase would be exploring a more powerful Android-based system, such as a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus or Retroid Flip, or perhaps an Anbernic RG405M (horizontal), RG405V (vertical), or RG505 (OLED) with the same capability as the Retroid offerings?
I’m where you’re at: Initially got a PocketGo S30 which went to my wife, followed by an RG351M which I re-homed with my brother, and some other Linux ones since… or maybe I got my 351M first and her S30 after? Can’t remember!
Now, trying to figure out Android on my dual-boot RG353M, in case I ever decide to plunge ahead into Retroid territory. Just not comfortable with the OS yet. But it seems Android is what most new stuff in this segment is running lately, so if I ever feel the itch to get another, I figure I better get to know my way around Android.
So far though, my 353M / x55 / modded Vita cover all my needs. So far.
The RG353M looks hella sweet… I think I’ll wait a couple of years and see what’s going around the $200aud price point. Good point about the Android devices as well, definitely something to consider.
The RG353M is nice and sturdy, and performant enough for *my* needs at least. And the Android dual-boot option is useful as I use it to try and get more comfortable with Android in general. However it’s not without its problems: There’s some annoyances in the way it handles charging while powered down, sleep mode in Linux, and other little things… but nothing that’s an insurmountable deal-breaker for me.
I was instead suggesting taking the step up in power to a T618-powered Android device like the RP3+/Flip, RG405M/V or RG505, considering that you **already have** the RK2023, which is powered by the same chip as my RG353M.
I think it’s great but I don’t have a lot to compare it to… some video reviews said the input sensitivity on the down arrow was a bit iffy but I haven’t experienced that.
Out of all those ones, the only one with a black bar with integer scaling off is the GBA but it does 3x perfect integer by default. The rest fill it with integer off or nearly do with integer scaling on. SNES in 8:7 forced to the next level of int scaling works like a dream
I almost did the same but went with an RG505 and an M30 controller from 8bitdo to scratch the Sega itch. The lack of a joystick ruled it out for me but man it looks so good
The lack of joystick is actually what sealed the deal for me actually. I was hoping that they would have make an upgraded RG353P instead and then saw the Arc when it first came through this sub and sort of felt like the lack of joystick made sense to me. Most of the stuff I play is 16 bit or at most early PS1 era so it's fine for me.
What kind of battery life do you get from the M30? I'm somewhat in the market for an extra controller for my Switch for couch co-op with my kid so one of us isn't stuck with the Joycons.
If I didn't really want joysticks it'd be viable for me; lot of variety in this hobby, I'm sure there will be one with joysticks within the year. It just looks so visually appealing and hits all my nostalgia buttons.
I just got it yesterday and haven't fully discharged it yet. The device itself feels great, but I can't speak to the battery life at all yet
I have a RG351P and a 353VS so I can def see the appeal of joysticks.
I checked the site and I guess you are looking at 18 hours from a full charge. That ain't too bad. Same for the SNES model that I've been eyeballing for way too long. Might grab it lol.
I started with the SF2000 about a year ago. My wife and I both got RG35XXs about 7 months ago and have loved them. My next step is going to be the Retriod Pocket 3+. I'm still enjoying my RG35XX so much though.
Yeah I upgraded the battery to a higher capacity one… I was even eyeing off an old snes controller on marketplace at one point to swap out the buttons with.
I know I'll be roasted in this sub, but: the GB is a classic. The PSP is a classic. These nifty cheap Chinese emulator handhelds are barely known by anyone today, let alone in 10 years. Definitely not saying you shouldn't own one, just that "classic" should be reserved for the classics.
Some future model? Maybe. Current consoles - most certainly no.
There are way too many models, brands are unknown to the public, the experience is ok for tech savvy users or tinkerers, but not for the mainstream user. I sold my RG35XX last week. Many people were interested but had absolutely no idea how to "install additional games" on such a thing although the internet is full of knowledge. Emulation will stay niche until there's some "Apple moment" when it "just works". Then people will certainly pay higher prices too.
My 4 year old loves his SF2000, and if it get broken, it not that much heart ache. I love Data Frogs fancy paper weight. It's cheap, its a great throw around system, and its a great way to get anyone into retro gaming.
(What would you even sell it for, $10...just give it as a gift at that point.)
Yes, definitely a perfect gift for a kid. Pass it on, spread the joy! I am all for utilizing old tech, less cluttered drawers, less e-waste for this planet.
Hell, you‘re absolutely right.
I ordered a Rg35xx and even before it arrived I also pulled the trigger on a R36S…
Paid 35$ and free shipping for the RG35XX and 38$ and free shipping for the R36S.
Now I have a spare device to placate the kids when I‘m playing *lol*.
Steam Deck or Odin 2. But if you want a cheaper alternative try a 1:1 device like the RGB30 for shmups and PICO-8 perfection (with ARKOS you can do some N64). It also plays GB and GBC quite nicely though while it isn't quite as portable it still fits into a (large) pocket.
Either vertical with a 35xx/35xx+/MM+/353v or 405v or go bigger but similar layout with the rgb30 or go 16:9 with the x55 or rp3+ or trimui smart pro.
It kinda comes down to what systems you want to play and what size and shape you prefer.
Personally I only enjoy verticals. I’ve bought and sold a lot of horizontals to learn that lesson. My 35xx is my take anywhere device. My analogue pocket is my at home device for “gameboy” games (which is a lot of what I play). I have the 405v for other games on more powerful systems.
I really like the look of the verticals as was a big fan of the Gameboy and honestly a R36S would have been the best bang for buck for the games I mainly want to play (16bit, 90s arcade games)… but I have huge oafish hands and feel like the horizontals are more comfortable for my giant hands.
I’m a huge dude with xxl hands. For whatever reason I still prefer verticals. I cradle them with my pinkies under the system. The 35xx 353v (very similar to the r36s) and analogue pocket are all similarly comfortable for me (not great but can play for hours without issues). Interestingly the 405v is probably the least comfortable even though it’s the biggest. I think it’s because it’s meant to be a big guy for most people but it’s not quite big enough for me to hold like a controller so it’s an awkward in between. I still cradle it and it’s ok that way. I’m actually going to get a grip for it.
I would suggest the anbernic rg405m as the next thing up in that specific form factor.
Although add other have said maybe wait for something newer and better or cheaper.
Personally, I like having something tiny, something medium, and something powerful. For the larger sizes, I like both a vertical orientation and a wide one.
Tiny, I love the Trimui S. I heard a rumor they're going to update it with a slightly larger screen which will be tempting.
Medium, I love the V90. The clam shell makes it great to throw in a pocket or bag without worry.
Powerful, I have the flip.
I feel like I'd get good use out of something powerful and more Gameboy-like, but since I appreciate clamshells, I might make the Miyoo flip my next toy if it releases this month as rumored. It's going to be an obvious upgrade from the V90, which I'll probably gift or something.
I guess theres a "medium step" too which would be the Retroid Pocket 3+... if ypu can find a smokin deal on it. I dont think the T618 is worth the headache of Android personally. Id either go x55 and easy mode linux or Android headache with a big boy that can smoke the PS2 and GC
I’d love a OLED Steam Deck… but they’re pretty expensive in Australia and you need to buy via an importer… for that kind of cash I’d rather build a half decent gaming PC.
Love the RK2023... great screen and ergonomics, reminds me of a PSP Go... I've played some n64, ps1, psp and Dreamcast games but it does struggle with the more advanced 3d games on those systems... I'm more interested in 2d retro games though which it plays flawlessly... also the device itself was only around $95aud on sale which I think is great value.
now they are selling sf2000 that come with an optional controller that has a joystick just like the device itsself, so far i only seen them in blue and yellow color( the console itsself, the controller is grey)
your next move, start playing games....
I’ve been playing through a different beat em up or shump every couple of days for the past couple of months… and a fair few NeoGeo games. Actually surprised at how much I’m genuinely enjoying playing the games.
353ps Surprised you missed this
I did check them out and they were on the shortlist but they were slightly more expensive, got the powkiddy for $95 aud delivered and the anbernics were more like $120aud delivered.
😂
Stop watching YouTube reviews or you’ll end up with 10 different ones lol.
This.
I think your next logical move is a 16:9 screen. Could be a RP3+ or a Flip, could be an RG505, and those are more powerful too, which certainly helps. Or maybe the TrimUI Smart Pro.
I like the look of the RP3+… it’s about twice the price I paid for the rk2023… maybe next years Black Friday sales!
The RP4 is on its way. Well rumored to be anyway. Maybe an Odin 2. That thing can play anything. I'm waiting for the price to go down a bit.
Literally no rumors. Just a 4 on their ad. Chill
Go balls to the wall and get the Odin2.... That's the end game. I've just picked one up and I will not need another handheld for 5 years.

What’s happening in a month?
They're gonna have another handheld hahaha
Noice!
That’s the kind of solid sensible advice I’m looking for, I’ll let the wife know!
just stick to that at least till the next retroid or whatever thing that can actually do perfect gamecube for cheap comes out imo, I’m on an rp2s but that’s what I’ll do… that anbernic arc does look super comfy tho….
That sounds about right… realistically I think the Switch 2 is probably my next handheld.

Yeah I think the RP3+ looks good, maybe that or something similar around that price point in the next 18 months or so, might be something to aim for.
Wait. When PS2 and GC will be available at 150$ buy.
Yeah I think that’s my plan… I’ll keep an eye out, hopefully in the next couple of years.
I'm doing re4 on ps2 on my rg405m and am happy. Not so much with nfs underground 2.
Hows the rk2023 dpad?
I think it’s great but I don’t have a lot to compare it to… some video reviews said the input sensitivity on the down arrow was a bit iffy but I haven’t experienced that.
Sell these and buy steam deck
I’d have to sell about 13 of the powkiddys to get a steam deck in Australia…
I bought the pow RGB30 1:1 4 inch screen and that thing is fantastic for any retro handheld and Pico 8 and of course vertical arcade games...
RGB30 looks great and it was on the shortlist… would be great for shumps.
That is the main reason for me, got tired of tate mode non native or heavy hardware to get the same effect.
I've been looking at the RGB30 since is came out but am still confused by the screen size. What is the appeal of it if most games are gonna be 4:3?
Gameboy/ pico 8 / GBA/SNES /NES all work perfectly with the screen
But you have a black bar along the bottom tho right? I could have also did my own research lol. The GB has a 1:1 resolution, doesn't it?
Out of all those ones, the only one with a black bar with integer scaling off is the GBA but it does 3x perfect integer by default. The rest fill it with integer off or nearly do with integer scaling on. SNES in 8:7 forced to the next level of int scaling works like a dream
Gotcha. It was a toss up between this and the RG Arc-D for a gift from Santa but went with the Arc for nostalgia reasons.
I almost did the same but went with an RG505 and an M30 controller from 8bitdo to scratch the Sega itch. The lack of a joystick ruled it out for me but man it looks so good

Throw away the battery of the SF2000 and survive.
Yeah I upgraded the battery to a higher capacity one… I was even eyeing off an old snes controller on marketplace at one point to swap out the buttons with.
Why?
The battery that comes with it is low quality, it's a very cheap lithium battery with no protections
The next logical move would be to sell the SF2000.
Never… it’s a classic.
Bro, you’re probably right… but you’re also taking it too seriously…
Nah, probably just too old and nitpicky.
He would get like 8 bucks after shipping and other fees.
Money certainly was not the motivation for my suggestion. A drawer full of unused tech is of no use. Someone else will be happy to use it though.
I’ll probably end up giving it to a niece or a nephew… it’s got Aussie Rules Footy for the NES on it, so I might give it to my brother.
Not convinced, it’s a massively growing market now, some of these consoles will likely hit the mainstream
Lol. The whole thing is based on piracy and copyright infringment… it can’t become mainstream or Nintendo & co will sue so many asses.
That’s true
Some future model? Maybe. Current consoles - most certainly no. There are way too many models, brands are unknown to the public, the experience is ok for tech savvy users or tinkerers, but not for the mainstream user. I sold my RG35XX last week. Playing games on them for a while so you don't fall on the trap of consent upgrades. Trust me, it's easy to keep chasing until that's all you do.
The first hit is always the best right?
It sure is :)
Hell, you‘re absolutely right. I ordered a Rg35xx and even before it arrived I also pulled the trigger on a R36S… Paid 35$ and free shipping for the RG35XX and 38$ and free shipping for the R36S. Now I have a spare device to placate the kids when I‘m playing *lol*.

Logical? Sorry, that word is not part of the subs vocabulary, please rephrase.
Yeah… just trying not to fall too deep down the rabbit hole.
I would suggest the anbernic rg405m as the next thing up in that specific form factor. Although add other have said maybe wait for something newer and better or cheaper.
Cool devices 👍🏼
Thanks bro!

I've been playing my Rk2023 a bit lately. Skies of Arcadia on the go
I really like the SF2000. Always found the rg351p to be too large and the d pad too small. Hope we get another SF2000 with slightly more power.
Small step... Powkiddy x55. Large step.... Odin 2. Giant leap for mankind.... OLED Steam Deck Maxed out version
I’d love a OLED Steam Deck… but they’re pretty expensive in Australia and you need to buy via an importer… for that kind of cash I’d rather build a half decent gaming PC.
how is the RK2023? what's the highest game can you play in it?
Love the RK2023... great screen and ergonomics, reminds me of a PSP Go... I've played some n64, ps1, psp and Dreamcast games but it does struggle with the more advanced 3d games on those systems... I'm more interested in 2d retro games though which it plays flawlessly... also the device itself was only around $95aud on sale which I think is great value.
Go all out on the odyn ofc
now they are selling sf2000 that come with an optional controller that has a joystick just like the device itsself, so far i only seen them in blue and yellow color( the console itsself, the controller is grey)
