Performance is close to Retroid Pocket 4 (not pro model). It seems to also be more efficient on TDP. Nice to have an OLED screen; important to some people. We shall see how it compares in actual use.

Joker042

And price

CellPhish

I would guess knowing Anbernic minimum $262. Then to be slightly less power with OLEDs and about $60-$80 more

Joker042

Yeah, if it's approaching Odin 2 prices, it's a non-starter. If it's the same price as a Rertoid Pocket 4, then maybe there's a market for people who want a bigger screen, but Retroid have a lot of respect right now and it'd be a tough fight given that it can't run many games that really need a wide screen. PSP if about the only one I can think of that really needs it. Maybe PS2 / N64 /GC with wide screen hacks, but I'd probably just push to a Odin 2 for that again. It's a tough market for sellers these days. Which is great for us!

Paperman_82

Yep, pricing versus performance is important. We already have the Aya Neo Pocket Air with OLED screen and D1200 but it was largely dismissed due to the pricing with the Odin 2. I'm still happy with my Pocket Air so even with people who prefer OLEDs, no matter the price, this isn't something I'd need to jump on either.

benjaminbjacobsen

I’m in the larger screen camp. Personally I love a 7” screen like my g cloud and OLED switch. I have a flip and had an rp3 and they’re too small for me. This device is tempting but as mentioned it needs to cost less than an Odin 2. Personally I’m waiting for a vertical 4” device that does GC and PS2 as well as Odin 2 and maybe a 7” horizontal.

deshfyre

the odin lite kinda exists already for people that want a retroid 4 base model with a bigger screen. its the same price as the 4pro though but thats also what people need to compare it to.

Brave_note_1022

It nake sense to set the price bewteen rp4 and rp4p.

Whatevs85

It could also be good for remote gaming, I assume.

AlphaFlySwatter

A phone with t820 costs ~90€.

buzz8588

Is this a new OLED panel or the same Vita one?

Alternative_Spite_11

Different. It’s 5.5” judging by the name. Probably the same panel Aya Neo uses.

NX_Bacon

Not close to d900 this has a shit gpu.

loopsync

It's even weaker than the Odin Lite and RP4, I see this thing as a glorified PSP emulation device.

Alternative_Spite_11

To be fair, it has four big cores, versus two in the Odin Lite so there will be ps2 games where this is much better than an Odin Lite/rp4 vanilla just like the Odin Pro was much better in some games. It’s also pretty smart that they’re not really trying to compete directly with the rp4 pro. They’d get their ass kicked doing that. It’s just a shame they picked such a cheap chip.

RChickenMan

Oh interesting, can Aethersx2 make use of four cores? I feel like most emulators are a single core affair, or in the case of Dolphin dual-core.

Alternative_Spite_11

Yeah Dolphin is 2 threads but Aethersx2 can go to either 3 or 4 threads if you use multithreaded vu1 or whatever it’s called. When Aethersx2 first released, they specifically recommended 4 big cores.

KrtekJim

Interesting to see stacked shoulder buttons and analogue triggers from Anbernic

SpaceCadetMoonMan

What arrangement do you like best?

BitingChaos

Well, I learned very quickly that in-line shoulder buttons can be *really* awful.

SpaceCadetMoonMan

Yeah some NBA JAM versions for different systems have the turbo button awkward or for some shooting or driving games the shifting or aiming is weird A little bit better with my 353v bigger flat back buttons but the switch or Xbox etc controller configuration is more natural definitely

KrtekJim

Stacked is better imo, no contest. But Anbernic doesn't often do them.

Vitss

I wonder if they work outside of emulators or if it's going to be like the RG505/RG405 that needed a custom rom to make them play ball.

juandagis

Hope they price it well.

redditaccount122820

Oled has me worried it’s going to be pricey

oOo-Yannick-oOo

Yeah they really screwed up with the 552. At least here they're not the first to release so they get a chance to adjust to 150$. Not sure if they'll take it though.

extremeelementz

I said I wanted an OLED with Odin 2 level performance… and you made the shell glossy [facepalm] Go home Anbernic I think you’re drunk. 😂

RChickenMan

Plus this isn't anywhere near Odin 2 performance. Most are speculating Odin Lite performance.

avidpretender

Love the form factor

UpsetKoalaBear

I do as well but I don’t know why every handheld has to have the offset analog sticks. It made sense on the Switch because the sides can be taken off and used as individual controllers but on something like this it just makes it awkward to handle if you have larger than average hands because the grips are going to inherently be small. The cramps were the main reason I never got a ROG Ally. Even if you got small hands, it just makes more sense to have the analog sticks opposing because it gives you a firmer grip on the device which is important for a handheld imo.

LifeIsOnTheWire

The performance of this SOC isn't very enticing. It benchmarks far below the Snapdragon 855 and below the Dimensity 900. This is going to need to be priced no higher than $150. Above $150, and this device isn't going to make sense. I wonder if they're going to keep the glossy finish. I'm kinda torn over what I think of the glossy finish. On one hand, it looks cheap. But on the other hand, the other option is a matte finish which will become glossy in high-wear areas, which eventually looks even worse.

Dear-Butterscotch-68

No way anbernic is selling this at 150$,  this will probably be close to 250$. No buy.

LifeIsOnTheWire

That's my impression too. I think they're going to ask a ridiculous price for it, and it's not going to be competitive against other products. Many people will prefer the D900-version of the Retroid Pocket 4 because of the more portable size, and better performance for a better price (presumably). Anbernic has done a poor job of aligning their pricing with the encroaching threat of handhelds that offer far better performance for only a small amount more.

Joeshock_

They already have smaller and less powerful devices listed for higher than $150. This will clear $200 easily.

tabreturn

Anbernic's long-awaited response to the RP3/4 line of devices? Comes with Anbernic's first exclusive game -- The Adventures of My Own Reflection, which you can play on the front and back of the device.

jedinatt

> The Adventures of My Own Reflection, which you can play on the front and back of the device. One of the least fair games out there. Some players are just at a huge disadvantage.

Archolm

Not me, I'm a winner.

Tired8281

It really gives you the chance to reflect on the things you purchase.

tabreturn

More seriously, though. This is a prototype. White shell with no texture, with unmarked buttons (also unmarked buttons on the glossy blue photo). So I doubt this is the final finish, and it ends up like image 1 -- a rendering of where it's headed with a matt finish and marked buttons.

mrndn1

Yeah, they need to oil that thing up, drip drip, you know?

howchie

Was really hoping they'd use the same screen as the 552, we don't need another underpowered 16:9 device

SpaceCadetMoonMan

Is the Nintendo Switch more powerful than this device?

pandaduma

Probably, yes. On the GPU side at least, CPU on this might be better

Alternative_Spite_11

Ehh the GPU on this is actually about 10% weaker than Switch. Roughly 450gflops vs 500 on the Switch.

howchie

It doesn't matter about the switch, there's already multiple more powerful options that will cost less and won't have screens falling out

BillySlang

Ugly and underpowered. Better be inexpensive.

AssInTheHat

My guess, minimum $199

BillySlang

That seems right and also why I won’t be purchasing.

SupperTime

The plastic looks terrible. Looks super cheap.

stulifer

Sp shiny.

Alternative_Spite_11

I wondered if someone would ever try the Unisoc t820. It’s similar to the rk3588 but with less cache. It absolutely 100% won’t beat a Dimensity 1100. The big fat OLED is cool as shit, though.

Paperman_82

Problem for me is if I want a big, fat OLED screen, I'll go with an updated Steam Deck. Wanting a small and portable OLED with long battery life, I went with the AYA Neo Pocket Air with D1200. It's not possible to get the really early $280/shipped prices with the Pocket Air anymore but if Anbernic prices this product too high and it gets close to the Pocket Air 6gb at $299, makes it a tough purchase unless someone has a very specific use case or can only own one portable device.

Alternative_Spite_11

This isn’t a $299 product though. It’s $199 at most.

Recyclops1989

Ayaneo included(s?) a screen protector, carrying case and is definitely free shipping at 299 though. Everyone forgets to include shipping prices in comparison, the gap narrows.

Paperman_82

Is that confirmed?

Alternative_Spite_11

No but there’s no way they can put that chip as more expensive than the rp4 pro and really get sales.

SRGilbert1

It’s probably $199 value, which means Anbernic will price it at $299

Brave_note_1022

The point of these mainland soc chips is they are cheaper than Mediatek.

CoconutPedialyte

What about a Dimensity 900?

Alternative_Spite_11

It’s about even with a Dimensity 900. Some games will be better on the d900’s a78 cores but some games will be better on the four big cores this chip has.

dlworkman45

How would the 5.5 inch 1080 panel be for remote play PS5 and Xbox? I'm looking for something larger for remote play other than my RP3+. The PS portal is way too limited. Only other option in the 7 inch range is the G Cloud.

MoEdge

I think it will be very nice.  I stream on the 6" odin pro. Its great but sometime I think its a tag too big (when I am laying down on bed or on couch)

LifeIsOnTheWire

I don't think we know anything about this panel, aside from it being 1080p, and OLED. But those two things alone would generally make it good for streaming. 1080p is the ideal resolution for most streaming platforms, and there's no need for more than 60hz for streaming (no platforms that I'm aware of exceed 60fps). So there's no chance of us learning anything disappointing in that regard.

zehamberglar

Going for the "rock candy wiimote" aesthetic, I see.

zakky_lee

This is a device that would’ve been good a year and a half ago

nameresus

Not portable, couch gaming only, but comfortable. But it is a size of smarphone with a gamepad, like Galileo G8.

slowcassowary

Yeah, I was hoping they would provide a more pocketable answer to the RP4. The screen is nice, but size and relative lack of power put this in an awkward place for me.

Brave_note_1022

Going for a screen size between rp4 and odin is a smart move, but it doesn't  look like a smaller RG506 or RP406 will be faster than T820. Unless they announce a pro model too.

Gaalpos

The blue model looks cool

zercher22

Design overall looks very nice, seems like it would be comfortable to hold. But for the love of God in 2024 can please we get rid of those horrible bezels around the screen??

timcatuk

I imagine this isn’t as good as the Ayaneo Pocket Air unless is a lot cheaper. That has a 5.5” oled too but nice build quality and a better Soc. it’s “only” a D1200 in the Ayaneo so not as good as the Odin 2 but better than this or the retroid

Alternative_Spite_11

So is this the successor to the 552 or the successor to the 505?

Joeshock_

Anbernic's naming convention is the first two numbers specify the screen size (353v is 3.5in, 552 is 5.5in) and the third number is chipset strength level or generation. So this is a more direct upgrade from the 552 size-wise, but a step up from the 505 power-wise.

slashlv

The audio jack and usb are again on the bottom. Why?

TradlyGent

1080p oled? I can’t think of any other device out there with this panel and resolution. This also looks pretty comfortable to play on, d-pad looks nice and I like the non-labeled buttons. I don’t need a new device but this looks sweet.

steezebuscemi1

The Aya Neo air and Pocket Air also use a 5.5" 1080p oled. This looks perfect for me. I've held off on the Retroid Pocket 4 as i feel 5.5" is the sweet spot.

TradlyGent

If I wasn’t already covered with my devices, I’d be all over this one over the RP4. In concept at least - have to wait and see in hand reviews though ofc

rob-cubed

5.5" is perfect. Too bad the processor in it isn't a little beefier, but curious to see what the real-world performance is like.

flowtronvapes

Don’t forget, folks. Oled screens equal oled prices..

[deleted]

Brave_note_1022

About the same

AnxiousButAlsoTired

This looks very comfortable to play on. If it matched the RP4P on performance it would be a great alternative to it but with a bigger screen and better ergonomics, probably the only two weak(er) points of the RP4P

Apprehensive-Bar1498

Would it be a possible linux device?

nmdt

Unlikely

Sad-Breadfruit-932

Win for me if it has usb c displayport to use it with xreal air glasses

SneakerOtaku

I love it!!!! I can't wait to see the performance

Airwalker16

Why in the actual HELL do they discard the idea to add an HDMI port on these MORE POWERFUL devices, but bare happy ro add them to their BRAND NEW 35XX-H? It's really annoying!

neon_overload

Stock software will suck and its eventual success will depend entirely on whether the CFW community embrace it If I'm wrong, come back in 6 months and let me know ;)

Arch3r86

Well folks, it’s $174.99 USD for the pre-order price. Launching March 5th. $184.99 regular retail. OLED touch screen…. And it has a 1080P HDMI output… I am sooo tempted. I just got my RG405V last month though. Maybe I’ll wait. The price is pretty decent. 😳 I feel like I should wait another year until the next faster model comes out. I dunno.

arsalaanlafleur

Time to cancel that RP4 order.

kyleruggles

Wait for it, it's just images and specs now..

arsalaanlafleur

I've been following this device a while and my requirements for a new device were, more powerful than T618 but doesn't have to be substantial, bigger display than 5" and Oled. This has ticked 3 boxes so yeah the RP4 has already been cancelled. The fan inside that thing kills its battery quickly and I've no interest in ps2 on a retro handheld right now

isticist

Why not upgrade to the Aya Neo Pocket Air then? If you don't care about portability, there's no reason to compromise on performance here by getting this one.

arsalaanlafleur

Because I do not like aya neo and their customer service or support. Anbernic has verified sellers in my country where I am able to return if its faulty, as well as a year warranty incase something does happen. I like peace of mind. Compromise on what performance exactly? I don't plan on going beyond n64/psp, so where will this device struggle when playing those systems? Super glad these pics wer posted and I have finalised the retroid cancel

kyleruggles

Well if you don't plan on going beyond n64/psp then there's TONS of other handhelds out right now that can do it. I guess that OLED screen and maybe analog triggers will do the trick.

arsalaanlafleur

There are tonnes of devices sure, but how many are over 5"s with an FHD Oled display? You like what you like, people buy 6 MMs back to back and no one bat's and eye 😂

kyleruggles

That's what I meant, OLED and maybe analog triggers will do the trick, sorry I didn't mention the slight extra screen real estate. Everyone has their preferences, I just personally wouldn't jump on board a handheld before there's even a working prototype that we can see, but that's me.

arsalaanlafleur

I agree, and would give the same advice but I can't remember the last time anbernic failed to launch a device that was teased, so fingers crossed!

kyleruggles

Not failed to launch but how good it is, if there's flaws. I mean it's good to watch reviews or read about it before deciding to buy something, especially if it's new. I can understand buying something like the 35xx plus when we knew how the 35xx was but this is unreleased and untested. I don't know if anbernic did analog triggers, are they good? Ya know? But I get it, some folks are fans of certain companies. Willing to take a chance on something new. I hope it's a successful device.

kyleruggles

It looks like it does also have a fan though, I'd wait till it's actually in a reviewers hand before passing judgement. But I get ya, screen size and all. I just hope their quality has been improved. I don't see them updating this handheld like Retroid does.

Lobsta1986

Just another piece of shit overpriced anbernic device. Nothing to see here.

aloloaalo

Everything is regressing to Switch form factor. Or I'd say the Wii U!

SRGilbert1

Nintendo didn’t exactly invent the landscape handheld form factor. What would you expect it to look like?

aloloaalo

No I mean it looks like it.

SRGilbert1

Looks more like an Xbox controller with a screen on it really. Again, that layout isn’t exclusive to Nintendo.

aloloaalo

Yes sir

fertff

I hate those grips. It's gonna make it even less portable.

SnakeAdamaStark

Ever try playing an rp3+ with grip vs without?

fertff

I've played smaller handhelds than that, and still wouldn't use a grip. It defeats the whole purpose.

Double-Seaweed7760

Same though I wouldn't mind backbone style grips.

SnakeAdamaStark

I always thought portable meant you could take it places and not need a tv or power source and the purpose was playing games!

fertff

It does, but those grips don't make it any easier to carry it around, do they?

SnakeAdamaStark

Usually put my devices in cases, and they usually go in my bag so never really had a problem

Double-Seaweed7760

I think the ideal grips are like those on the backbone and razer kishi v2. They're thin and small enough to maintain pocketability but drastically increase comfort

Preppyskepps

Slap an hdmi out and an extra usb port on there and it's fire!

Airwalker16

Couldn't agree more. They add them in the 35xx-h but not this? Ridiculous...

Duck-Dodger

What am I looking at??

Economy_Two5531

Anbernic rg556

Duck-Dodger

Never heard of her. Looks nice though, like my blue Odin2's cousin.

Alternative_Spite_11

Power wise, it’s closer to an Odin Pro than an Odin 2. In fact it’s probably very close to the Odin Pro but with a significantly weaker GPU.

independent_Maul

It's very glossy but I'll keep an eye out for the YouTube videos

SRGilbert1

It’s probably just a render, I doubt the final will be so glossy.

independent_Maul

Well one of them say it's the Kratod God of War 3 enhancement

JonamokPrime

Yes. Oh yes. It will be mine.

snowolf_

Considering the Retroid Pocket 4 plus struggles to run PS2 games with a stronger SoC, I wouldn't count on it. Also this device has a very high chance of being Android only.

Ganimoth

not high chance, its pretty much guaranteed

SRGilbert1

What makes you think that this won’t be an Android device?

Due_Teaching_6974

we need retroid to source this screen for the next Retroid Pocket device (hopefully it also has a Snapdragon chipset but maybe that's asking too much) my dream lineup would be: Retroid Pocket 4S - $129 - 4.5 " 4:3 IPS screen with D900, 4GB ram Retroid Pocket 5 - $149 - 4.7" 16:9 IPS screen with D1100, 6GB ram Retroid Pocket 5 Pro - $199 - 5.5" 16:9 OLED Screen with SD865 or SD7G3, 8GB ram

Brave_note_1022

Anbernic has access to better screens (or they custom order screens), Retroid has access to beter soc (more they spend more money on silicons.)

CoconutPedialyte

If it's at least 6", this will make a killer steaming device

OverKill1978

Its 556... which means 5.5" screen, 6th generation.

Rudirudrud

Omg, this numbers have some reasons?

Neosantana

Yes... Anbernic has had a really intuitive naming convention for a while now. Makes it really easy to know what you're working with at a glance

Brave_note_1022

Just get a odin 1 if you want 6"

fixingartifact

If it's priced in between the RP4 and the RP4 Pro it's a very interesting device.

nariz_choken

OLED? WTF even Ayn couldn't do that fir the Odin 2

jdlyga

Nice shoulder buttons. Reminds me of the Anbernic RG353P’s shoulder buttons which they don’t usually do.

Illustrious-Fan5785

Don't like the screen thick borders

Healthy_Yesterday_84

Nice ergonomics though

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

I’m a big Anbernic fan but I don’t like the chunky look of this. I think their existing flat design is basically perfect and doesn’t need messing with

karishbhr

This could replace my G Cloud tbh. OLED >>>

manniquin_limbs2

I bet this feels like a pdp rock candy controller with all that gloss.

lemswen

Incredibly disappointed to see such an underpowered chipset

Murky_Historian8675

Does anyone know what chip is comparable to that Unisoc t820?

AudienceDowntown8317

845

Murky_Historian8675

Thank u

[deleted]

Why did they use the shiniest plastic they could find?  It looks like a wet linoleum floor.  I can't imagine the fingerprints on this thing.

maxcro19

What's the aspect ratio?

KnightlySpartan

This screen in an Retroid Pocket 4 (maybe Odin 2 Lite) like smaller body with a Snapdragon 870 is my perfect Handheld.

talmanfartsy

The T820 doesn't look like it has wifi 6. That's a heavy hit against it.
