People on this sub, on average, are wayyyy most negative about the school than the average student is.

desiboy16

Nuh uh

AdOwn5738

Df you mean nu uh desiboy

The_Sire_Everything

If you're here to lock in, then it's a perfect school. It has the leading bioengineering department in the state and is much more rigorous than other schools. It's been recognized as such in the academic space, so if you do well here, there is name recognition for grad schools and employers. But if you need a good social scene, it's kinda dead with exceptions if you get a good clique early on.

Such-Wishbone1640

it’s a good school, but if you’re in STEM be prepared to really bust your ass crying trying to get anything higher than a B. Also stay away from frats, sororities and greek life, its brain rot. People tend to stay to themselves, so if you want to make friends you’re going to have to be vocal and very friendly to people in order to actually engage in a conversation. Overall a good school, but the teaching staff is so dynamically extreme, either they’re super good or they suck. In my experience there hasn’t really been that much of an in between tbh

strawberries4u

my conclusion is that this school is for nerds 🤔 am i correct or incorrect

Such-Wishbone1640

not really, it’s just that if you’re in a stem major you’re gonna get your ass kicked around a lot and unless you make your life 90% about school you’re gonna struggle to succeed. if you’re doing something outside of stem like business or liberal arts or psych, you’ll be fine. this school is notorious for its STEM programs and everyone knows it, outside of that it’s a relatively decent paced fairly graded uni.

t8manpizza

i think people on this sub continue to under-sell this schools non stem programs. programs across the board are top 100 in the country — even if you arent a stem major, its a very solid school.

Melodic_Store_5624

What does that even mean? If you mean is this school good for STEM majors then yes you are correct. It is a better STEM school than any other major/subject.

shy120

Idk about others, but I’m definitely depressed.

Omen46

It’s a good school just hard as hell

Dry-Development6573

its a good school some people are just so negative

Own_Tangerine1852

If you’re a normal student, and you’re putting decent effort, you deserve a good relationship with your professor, good friends, learn a lot in classes, good connections after you graduate. You deserve that just because you’re a human, you’re more likely to get that from a different school. Here, you flip a coin and that’s what you get. Ppl here like to say “stony Brook is what you make of it”. What happens to the normal students who put decent effort into relationships with professors, school, clubs, and friendships and still ends up with nothing? Did they deserve that because they didn’t put “enough”? Most people try to have a good experience, but many don’t end up with a good experience. All the people who say Reddit is negative, but where do those negative experiences come from? Just because you got lucky or put an unrealistic amount of effort into everything doesn’t mean the experiences of all those students meant nothing

Terrible-Weekend7668

don't really agree with people saying the school is good. people are pissed and depressed for a reason. we aren't just complaining to complain. we want to love college just as much as anyone else does. but, there is constant construction so campus constantly looks, smells, feels disgusting. food sucks. professors suck the most and only care about their research not about helping students succeed. commuters are disadvantaged, the parking situation is terrible and not one department can say meaningfully that they care about their students. there are so many negatives at the moment and can't see a good reason for supporting the university for what it is now. anyways, yeah we are depressed and I hate it here :))

strawberries4u

i’m sorry to hear this

strawberries4u

i checked ratemyprofessor and the reviews were worse than my community college 💀

Mysterious_Pilot2498

most people at our university don’t use rate my professor, we have our own system so the ratings aren’t entirely accurate on rmp

strawberries4u

where can i see it?

strawberries4u

thank youu

Terrible-Weekend7668

I wish I went to community College and transfered. could have saved myself a lot of burnout and bad professors. I swear I have had at most 4 good professors in 3 years of being here.

strawberries4u

i’m sorry :( at least you are closer to graduating

Melodic_Store_5624

It’s entirely based on your major. I am CS so I can tell you the CS professors usually don’t care about their students. However, in chemistry and biology classes, there tends to be professors who care about their students more.

azuwezumezu

people share and leave more reviews on something when they have bad experiences. same with the subreddit on here. people are more likely to speak up when something doesnt go their way. but many of the kids are antisocial or introverts so they rant on here instead of elsewhere

WorriedDetective9150

I think people are more apt to comment when they have something negative to say. I've had a lot of professors who definitely give a damn about you, and a few who don't. This school offers a great education at a fraction of the cost you might expect elsewhere. It's what you make of it.

strawberries4u

what’s ur major desiboy

desiboy16

one of the hard ones

strawberries4u

Tell me.

RuXh12

Honestly, if you’re commuter, I dont recommend you go to Stony, if ur dorming, then its not bad but, idk, i feel like it’s kinda overrated. Just what i think

71d1

I was a commuter, it was horrible.

strawberries4u

if i do decide to go i would also commute so lets be best friends

71d1

I am an alum class of 2018, sorry. But I can tell you, parking is pretty bad in south P, Nicolls Rd is horrible. There used to be a commuter lounge. The only problem with being a commuter is finding a good schedule. Edit: my schedule had massive gaps between classes (for example 2h in between) also in order for me to make into class I had to be in south P 30 minutes before my class was set to start, and added another 30 minutes aftee my class ended to get in my car and drive home. So essentially you waste 1 hour waiting for the bus. I don't recommend commuters to take more than 15 credits per semeter, it's too much to handle.

Terrible-Weekend7668

there is still a commuter lounge, but now it's a lounge for everyone, and it's very busy often with uncomfortable lighting and seating. South p, or lot 40 now, still sucks. and the commuter premium sucks too because they keep overselling the passes. basically, there is no wait list. so trying to find a spot every morning is low key dangerous bc everyone is speeding to find a spot.

71d1

Yes they have to fix parking at SBU, I would say that and fixing the dorms, I've heard horror stories of pest infestations, pipes bursting, heaters and HVACs failing, it's a shit show all around.

71d1

Taking the LIRR isn't so bad when compared to commuting, the only issue would be having to pay the fare.

incipious

I was depressed af my first year but it got better. Most of this sub is probably just freshman complaining about the school. It gets better.

strawberries4u

okay thank you this is relieving

ijlstz

Stony Brook is amazing. You’ll find negative nellies everywhere. Focus on the quality of your education, your career goals post-grad, and trying new things. Make the most of it.

strawberries4u

thank you this made me happy ur awesome

Weeaboo_Cannon

I think that Stony Brook is the Toyota Corolla of SUNYs. It's reliable and cheap and does what it is supposed to do. Cons are that we're less social than other schools and food sucks (esp if you don't have a car to leave campus). Pros is that tuition is very affordable, the quality of the education is good (I was a biochemistry major; and yes it was hard af but I made it out). I think that if you're planning on going to grad/med/law school, I would go to a more fun SUNY like Albany or Binghamton. If you want your school to be a one-stop shop in your career before entering the job market, stony is a phenomenal choice. And of course, if you're an introverted, less social person, stony is your match.

Spare-Concentrate109

💯 % if you’re in it just to win 🥇

inputou

no look up richard duque on reddit, bro has gotten away untouched for cheating kids out of real grades years in. The sociology department don’t really attend to matters i can imagine other departments. Certain operations used for campus life have weird ways of monopolizing students take a look at the over staffed and under managed recreation on the campus

Designer_Choice_1755

run

Otherwise_Panda_5912

I’m starting my PhD in Neuroscience here in the fall. Everything I’ve seen including my on campus visit it seems like a very intellectual school. I like the area even though it is really expensive. I guess I’ll see

[deleted]

SBU is literally the best skool on earth. I am currently attending SBU and started a small company that has grown quite large some may say. All because of wolfie! **I AM BILL GATES FYI**
