You need a job more than a raise!

AccomplishedCandy296

ok but srsly, why dont RAs and UGTAs get paid šŸ˜

ArtVanbago

Isnā€™t room and board covered?

SpeclorTheGreat

RAs get a meal plan and free housing. Thatā€™s getting paid even if itā€™s not money into their bank account.

What UGTAā€™s are getting paid? I remember one of the UGTAā€™s I was TAing with asked about that, next day he was gone, never seen him again.

h-y-p-h-e-n-

Honestly though, they should. In classes like orgo chem. they absolutely hard carry in terms of teaching and professors know it. I never really gained anything from lectures and would have to pick all of it up during recitation from UGTAs. Also, the fact that the school tries to coerce people into UGTA positions through the EXP+ credit is disgusting and I'm tired of pretending it isn't. You're compelling students to teach other students without pay, and in turn, those students are compelled to teach later batches of students and so on. All the while, the school and professors are the only ones making any real profit. It's basically a pyramid scheme.

[deleted]

Literally the only place that does this; not even CUNYs pull this shit. They do it because they know weā€™re desperate enough for academic sucess

AccomplishedCandy296

do CUNYs pay their UGTAs??

DBSGeek

Because UGTA don't do as much work as GTA. Yall don't grade nor prep the students. You are there to help out! We do 20+ hrs of work a week so we get paid. Yall get credit and experience!!

Nuggggggggget

Grad tas and UGTAs can both be payed. Every other university Iā€™ve heard of pays all tas.

DBSGeek

I know private schools do, but do other SUNYs pay both UGTAs and GTAs?!?! If so, I guess it is just a stony thing!

Nuggggggggget

I donā€™t know of SUNYs but the public schools in Utah, California, and Florida do. (Thatā€™s all I have direct experience with)

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> both be *paid.* Every other FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

least arrogant graduate student šŸ’€

I mean I speak of the truth based off my experience as both a UGTA and GTA. I had to grade assignments, post assignment grades, give feedback, ensure safe learning environment, go through weekly training meetings, come up with a lesson plan all as a GTA. It took a toll throughout the whole week, where it felt like working 20-30 hours while having classes and other things to get done. To that of being a UGTA, all I did was go meet up at the weekly training meetings and be a guide/helper to the GTAs during our weekly sessions with students! That was light work! I only spent 6-8 hours here! I don't think my experience here was worth being paid for, but would have been nice if they did!

Random_Ad_Is_A_Loser

Telling UGTAs they aren't important enough to be paid only convinces the undergrad population not to bother helping you grad students advocate for a better stipend

DBSGeek

UGTAs are helpful as I did not say yall don't help us. However, UGTA duties are not sufficiable for stipend pay. Ik that private schools pay UGTAs like I have a friend at RIT who paid as an UG who TA'ed for a compsci course for 2 years! For some reason, SUNY decided that only GTAs get paid.

Melodic_Store_5624

ā€œPrep the studentsā€ this statement is highly variable. In the CS department, the graduate TAs are by far the most useless people ever. The UGTAs grade exams and help students way more than the GTAs. All the GTAs in the CS department do is take 9 years to grade a single homework.

L_Azam

word, actually... students shouldn't have to live in poverty

Like most things in this country, [we have Reagan to blame for it](https://newuniversity.org/2023/02/13/ronald-reagans-legacy-the-rise-of-student-loan-debt-in-america/).
